Almost every Bangladeshi adult writes one of these eventually — a new cheque book, a lost card, a statement for a visa file. The bank does not want good English. It wants your account number, your request, and your signature, in that order.
বাংলাদেশে প্রায় প্রত্যেক প্রাপ্তবয়স্ককে কখনো না কখনো এটা লিখতে হয় — নতুন চেক বই, হারানো কার্ড, ভিসার ফাইলের জন্য স্টেটমেন্ট। ব্যাংক ভালো ইংরেজি চায় না। চায় আপনার হিসাব নম্বর, আপনার আবেদন, আর আপনার সই — এই ক্রমে।

A bank application is a short formal letter to the Branch Manager stating one request. The format never changes: date, addressee, subject line, body, closing, and your details with a signature.
ব্যাংকের দরখাস্ত হলো শাখা ব্যবস্থাপকের কাছে লেখা ছোট আনুষ্ঠানিক চিঠি, যাতে একটাই আবেদন থাকে। কাঠামো কখনো বদলায় না: তারিখ, প্রাপক, বিষয়, মূল অংশ, সমাপ্তি, আর সইসহ আপনার তথ্য।

কাঠামোটা মুখস্থ করে ফেলুন, সারাজীবন কাজে লাগবে: **Date:** ৯ আগস্ট ২০২৬ **To:** The Branch Manager, [ব্যাংকের নাম], [শাখার নাম] Branch, [শহর] **Subject:** Application for a new cheque book **Sir/Madam,** — মূল অংশ, দুই থেকে তিন বাক্য **Yours faithfully,** — নাম, হিসাব নম্বর, ফোন, সই মূল অংশে তিনটে জিনিস থাকতেই হবে: (১) আপনি কে ও আপনার **হিসাব নম্বর**, (২) ঠিক কী চান, (৩) কেন (এক লাইন, দরকার হলে)। উদাহরণ: 'I am an account holder of your branch, and my account number is 1234567890. My cheque book has finished, and I request you to issue a new one.' এটুকুই যথেষ্ট। কয়েকটা ব্যবহারিক কথা যা কেউ বলে না: **হিসাব নম্বর ভুল হলে দরখাস্ত ফেরত আসবে** — সবচেয়ে বেশি এখানেই ভুল হয়, তাই দুবার মিলিয়ে নিন। **এক দরখাস্তে এক আবেদন** — চেক বই আর ATM কার্ড একসাথে চাইলে দুটো আলাদা কাগজ ভালো। সাথে NID-র ফটোকপি নিয়ে যান, প্রায় সব ব্যাংক চায়। কার্ড হারালে বা চুরি হলে **আগে ফোনে ব্লক করান**, তারপর দরখাস্ত — উল্টো করলে টাকা যাওয়ার ঝুঁকি থাকে। আর 'Sir' লিখলে শেষে 'Yours faithfully', নাম জানা থাকলে 'Dear Mr Rahman' ও 'Yours sincerely'। **সবচেয়ে বেশি যে কারণে দরখাস্ত ফেরত আসে, সেটা ইংরেজি নয় — সই।** হিসাব খোলার সময় আপনি ব্যাংকে যে নমুনা সই (specimen signature) দিয়েছিলেন, দরখাস্তের সই তার সাথে মিলতে হবে। বছরের পর বছর ধরে অনেকেরই সই একটু বদলে যায়, আর তখন কাউন্টার থেকে কাগজ ফেরত আসে — ইংরেজি যতই নিখুঁত হোক। যাওয়ার আগে চেক বইয়ের বা পুরনো কোনো কাগজের সইটা একবার দেখে নিন। আর কখনো কখনো ব্যাংক দ্বিতীয় সই বা ছবি চাইতে পারে, তাই NID-র ফটোকপির সাথে দুটো পাসপোর্ট সাইজ ছবি সাথে রাখলে দ্বিতীয়বার যেতে হয় না। **আর আজকের বাস্তবতা:** বাংলাদেশের বেশিরভাগ ব্যাংকে এখন চেক বই, ATM কার্ড, স্টেটমেন্ট আর ঠিকানা বদলের জন্য ছাপানো ফরম আছে, আর অনেক কাজ অ্যাপ বা ইন্টারনেট ব্যাংকিং থেকেই হয়ে যায়। তাহলে দরখাস্ত কেন? কারণ ফরম যেখানে থামে, চিঠি সেখান থেকে শুরু হয় — হিসাব বন্ধ করা, ভুল কেটে নেওয়া টাকা ফেরত চাওয়া, ভিসা বা দূতাবাসের জন্য নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের স্টেটমেন্ট চাওয়া, যৌথ হিসাবে নাম যোগ করা, কিংবা মৃত ব্যক্তির হিসাব সংক্রান্ত কাজ — এসবে লিখিত আবেদন লাগেই। আর সবচেয়ে জরুরি কথা: দরখাস্ত জমা দেওয়ার সময় **একটা কপিতে ব্যাংকের সিল ও তারিখ নিয়ে নিজের কাছে রাখুন**। পরে যদি বলা হয় 'আমরা তো কিছু পাইনি', ওই সিল দেওয়া কপিটাই আপনার একমাত্র প্রমাণ। ভিসার জন্য স্টেটমেন্ট চাইলে কোন তারিখ থেকে কোন তারিখ পর্যন্ত লাগবে সেটা চিঠিতে স্পষ্ট লিখুন, আর দূতাবাস যদি ব্যাংক সলভেন্সি সার্টিফিকেট চায়, সেটা আলাদা জিনিস — আলাদা চিঠিতে চাইতে হবে।

Sir, I am an account holder of your branch.
Flowery openings waste the reader's time. Bank staff process dozens a day and look for the account number first.
Forgetting the account number.
My account number is 1234567890.
Without it the application cannot be actioned at all. This is the single most common reason one is sent back.
Please give me cheque book and also ATM card and also change my address.
One request per application.
Different requests go to different desks. Combining them delays all three.
Signing with a different signature from the one on your account.
Sign exactly as you did when opening the account.
The bank verifies against its specimen card. A mismatched signature means rejection, however correct the English.

- Carry a photocopy of your NID — almost every branch asks for it. — NID-র ফটোকপি সাথে নিন — প্রায় প্রতিটি শাখাই চায়।
- For a lost card, phone the helpline to block it first, then write the application. — কার্ড হারালে আগে হেল্পলাইনে ফোন করে ব্লক করান, তারপর দরখাস্ত লিখুন।
- Ask for a received copy with the bank's seal. It is your proof if the request goes missing. — ব্যাংকের সিলসহ received কপি চেয়ে নিন। আবেদন হারিয়ে গেলে এটাই আপনার প্রমাণ।

Can I write the application in Bangla?
Yes — every bank in Bangladesh accepts Bangla applications, and no branch will refuse one. English is common for statements attached to visa files, where the embassy reads them.
Do I need to write it by hand?
Handwritten is standard and always accepted. Printed is fine too, but the signature must always be by hand, matching your specimen.
How long does a cheque book or card take?
Usually seven to fifteen working days, depending on the bank. Ask for the expected date when you submit and note who told you.
What if the branch loses my application?
This is exactly why you ask for a stamped received copy. With it, the branch has to trace the request; without it, you start again.
