Introductionভূমিকা

Say "five lakh taka" to a banker in Dubai or Toronto and the sentence stops there. Lakh and crore are South Asian units; the rest of the English-speaking world counts in thousands and millions. Five lakh is five hundred thousand. One crore is ten million. Money English starts with getting the number across.

দুবাই বা টরন্টোর ব্যাংকারকে "five lakh taka" বললে বাক্যটা ওখানেই থেমে যাবে। লাখ আর কোটি দক্ষিণ এশীয় একক; ইংরেজিভাষী বাকি দুনিয়া হাজার আর মিলিয়নে গোনে। পাঁচ লাখ মানে five hundred thousand। এক কোটি মানে ten million। টাকার ইংরেজি শুরুই হয় সংখ্যাটা বোঝাতে পারা দিয়ে।

Bank English is a short list of verbs — open, deposit, withdraw, transfer, check — each with one fixed preposition, plus the sentences for when a card or an app stops working. Everything at a counter is one of those.

ব্যাংকের ইংরেজি মানে গুটিকয়েক ক্রিয়া — open, deposit, withdraw, transfer, check — প্রতিটার সাথে একটা করে নির্দিষ্ট preposition, আর কার্ড বা অ্যাপ কাজ না করলে যে বাক্যগুলো লাগে। কাউন্টারের সব কাজই এর কোনো একটা।

ক্রিয়াগুলো একবারে মিলিয়ে নিন, কারণ বাংলা থেকে অনুবাদ এখানে সবচেয়ে বেশি বিভ্রান্তি তৈরি করে। টাকা জমা দেওয়া = deposit money into an account ("Please do the money in my account" নয়)। টাকা তোলা = withdraw money from an account — বাংলায় আমরা "টাকা কাটা" বা "টাকা তোলা" বলি বলে ইংরেজিতে "cut money" বেরিয়ে আসে, যেটা ইংরেজিতে অর্থহীন। টাকা পাঠানো = transfer money to another account। হিসাব দেখা = check my balance। আর প্রতিটা preposition আলাদা: deposit into, withdraw from, transfer to — এই তিনটে মুখস্থ রাখলে বাকিটা সহজ। কাউন্টারে অনুরোধ করার সময় "I want" নয়, "I'd like" — "I'd like to open a savings account, please." "I'd like to withdraw twenty thousand taka." পার্থক্যটা ছোট মনে হলেও ইংরেজিতে "I want" বাক্যটা দাবির মতো শোনায়, আর "I'd like" অনুরোধের মতো। আর সংখ্যা বলার সময় ধীরে বলুন এবং প্রয়োজনে কাগজে লিখে দেখান; বাংলাদেশি উচ্চারণে thirteen আর thirty, fifteen আর fifty অনেক সময় একরকম শোনায়, আর ব্যাংকের কাউন্টারে এই ভুলটার দাম আছে। আমাদের ব্যাংকিংয়ের কিছু শব্দ শুধু এই অঞ্চলেই চলে, আর বিদেশে গেলে সেগুলো ঘুরিয়ে বলতে হয়। DPS — এর ইংরেজি প্রতিশব্দ নেই; বলুন "a monthly savings scheme"। FDR — বলুন "a fixed deposit" বা "a term deposit"। "Cheque book" ব্রিটিশ বানানে ঠিক আছে, আমেরিকায় "checkbook"। "Bearer cheque", "pay order", "TT" — এগুলো বললে বিদেশি ব্যাংকার বুঝবেন না; কাজটা বর্ণনা করুন: "I want to send money to another bank." আর মোবাইলে টাকা — বিকাশ, নগদ — এগুলো নিজস্ব নাম; বিদেশে বোঝাতে বলুন "a mobile money service". শেষে সমস্যার বাক্যগুলো, যেগুলো সবচেয়ে বেশি লাগে অথচ কেউ শেখায় না। "My debit card isn't working." "The ATM took my card." "The machine didn't give me the cash but the money has been debited." — শেষ বাক্যটা মনে রাখুন, কারণ এটাই সবচেয়ে বেশি ঘটে; debit মানে হিসাব থেকে টাকা কাটা যাওয়া। "There's a transaction on my statement I don't recognise." "How long will the transfer take?" আর সব শেষে যে বাক্যটা প্রতিটি অভিযোগে জুড়ে দেবেন: "Could I get a reference number for this complaint, please?" — লিখিত নম্বর ছাড়া অভিযোগ পরে প্রমাণ করা যায় না।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • I want to open account.

    I'd like to open an account, please.

    Add 'an' before 'account' and use 'I'd like to… please' to sound polite, not demanding.

  • Give me my balance.

    Could you tell me my balance, please?

    'Give me' sounds like an order. Use 'Could you…, please?' with staff.

  • I want to cut money from ATM.

    I'd like to withdraw money from the ATM.

    'Cut money' is translated from Bangla and is not used. The verb is 'withdraw'.

  • Please do the money in my account.

    Please deposit the money into my account.

    The correct verb for putting money in is 'deposit', not 'do'.
