Introductionভূমিকা

"I will get down at the next stop." Every Bangladeshi says it and every Bangladeshi is understood at home — but "get down" in English means climbing down off something, or dancing. You get off a bus, off a train, out of a car. One preposition, and it is the clearest single marker of South Asian English there is.

Transport English is four questions and two requests: does it go there, how much is the fare, where do I get off, when do we arrive — plus asking for a ticket and asking to be let past. Everything else you can point at.

যানবাহনের ইংরেজি মানে চারটে প্রশ্ন আর দুটো অনুরোধ: এটা ওখানে যায় কি না, ভাড়া কত, কোথায় নামব, কখন পৌঁছাব — সাথে টিকিট চাওয়া আর পাশ কাটিয়ে যাওয়ার অনুমতি। বাকি সব দেখিয়ে দিলেই চলে।

ওঠা-নামার ক্রিয়াগুলো একবারে শিখে নিন, কারণ এখানেই সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয়। বড় যানবাহনে — বাস, ট্রেন, প্লেন, লঞ্চ — get on আর get off। ছোট যানবাহনে, যেখানে মাথা নিচু করে ঢুকতে হয় — গাড়ি, ট্যাক্সি, সিএনজি — get in আর get out of। "I got down from the bus" নয়, "I got off the bus"। "I sat in the taxi" নয় (ওটা বসে থাকা বোঝায়), "I got into the taxi"। প্রশ্নের ক্রমটাই দ্বিতীয় বড় সমস্যা। বাংলায় ক্রিয়া শেষে বসে বলে আমরা বলি "This bus going to Uttara?" বা "How much ticket?"। ইংরেজিতে প্রশ্নে সহায়ক ক্রিয়া লাগবেই: "Does this bus go to Uttara?" "How much is the fare to Gulshan?" "Which stop should I get off at for the hospital?" "Does this train stop at Airport station?" খেয়াল করুন ভাড়ার শব্দটা fare, price নয় — বাস-ট্রেনের ভাড়া সবসময় fare, আর টিকিটের দাম বোঝাতে "How much is a ticket to Chittagong?"ও চলে। টিকিট কাটার সময় গন্তব্যের আগে to বসে, আর একমুখী-দ্বিমুখী আলাদা শব্দ আছে: "One ticket to Chittagong, please." "Two returns to Sylhet, please." যুক্তরাজ্যে একমুখী single, ফিরতিসহ return; যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে one-way আর round-trip। ঢাকার মেট্রোরেল বা বাসে কার্ড ব্যবহার করলে "Where can I top up my card?" — টাকা ভরাকে ইংরেজিতে top up বলে, recharge নয় (recharge শব্দটা মোবাইলের জন্য আমাদের এখানে চলে, কিন্তু ট্রান্সপোর্ট কার্ডের জন্য top up-ই স্বাভাবিক)। শেষ দুটো বাক্য ভিড়ের জন্য, আর বাংলাদেশে ভিড় নিত্যসঙ্গী। কারও পাশ কাটিয়ে দরজার দিকে যেতে হলে ধাক্কা দেওয়ার বদলে বলুন "Excuse me, I need to get off here" বা শুধু "Excuse me, please" — ইংরেজিতে এই "excuse me"-টাই স্পর্শ না করে পথ চাওয়ার নিয়ম। আর সিট নিয়ে: "Is this seat taken?" — খালি কি না জানার আদর্শ প্রশ্ন; উত্তরে "No, go ahead" শুনলে বসে পড়ুন। কোথায় নামতে হবে জানা না থাকলে অনুরোধটা এভাবে করুন: "Could you tell me when we get to Motijheel?" — প্রায় সবাই মনে রাখেন এবং বলে দেন।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • This bus going to Uttara?

    Does this bus go to Uttara?

    To ask a yes/no question, start with 'Does' and use the base verb 'go'.

  • How much ticket?

    How much is the fare?

    'How much ticket' is incomplete; ask 'How much is the fare?' or 'How much is a ticket to…?'

  • I will get down at next stop.

    I'll get off at the next stop.

    For buses and trains, the natural phrase is 'get off', not 'get down'.

  • Tell me the station is coming.

    Could you tell me when we reach the station?

    Use a polite request 'Could you tell me when…' instead of a direct command.
