Why EnglishBD exists

Bangladesh is full of talent — students who top their classes, developers and designers who match anyone in the world, editors and creators whose work wins audiences. Yet every day, that talent hits the same wall: English. Interviews go badly not because the candidate lacks skill, but because they lack confident English. Freelancers lose clients over a chat message. Students memorise grammar for exams but freeze in a real conversation.

English education here has long been either expensive, exam-only, or built for foreigners rather than for Bangladeshis. EnglishBD was created to change that: proper English learning, explained in Bangla where it helps, priced at zero for the core, and designed around real life — conversations, interviews, emails, exams and work.

Meet the founder — Salmaun Hossain

Salmaun Hossain’s road to EnglishBD did not start in a classroom — it started in an edit suite. From 2009 he built a career in Bangladesh’s media industry as a video editor, working with TV channels, then directing and producing music videos and short films. Many of those works became popular hits, and his name became a familiar one — featured on television and in newspaper coverage.

In 2017 he turned to freelancing and international remote work. That is where he saw the problem that would define his next decade: skilled Bangladeshi professionals — editors, developers, designers — losing clients and jobs not because of their craft, but because of English communication.

In 2022 he decided to solve it properly. While researching, he found englishbd.com — a domain first registered in 2011 — on sale for about $450, and bought it without a second thought. Four years of planning and building later, EnglishBD launched in August 2026.

The journey

1. 2009

   Starts as a video editor

   Salmaun Hossain begins his career as a video editor, going on to edit for television channels in Bangladesh.

2. 2010s

   Direction & production

   He moves into directing and producing — music videos, short films and more. Many become popular hits, earning him a recognised name and coverage on TV and in newspapers.

3. 2017

   Freelancing & remote work

   He shifts focus to freelancing and international remote work — and sees the pattern up close: talented Bangladeshi professionals losing opportunities not for lack of skill, but for lack of confident English communication.

4. 2022

   The idea — and the domain

   Determined to fix that barrier, he starts planning how Bangladeshis could genuinely learn English. When he spots englishbd.com — a domain registered back in 2011 — listed for sale at about $450, he buys it on the spot.

5. 2026

   EnglishBD launches

   After four years of planning and building, EnglishBD launches in August 2026: an AI-powered, Bangla-supported English-learning platform whose core learning experience is free.

Our vision

English for every Bangladeshi. Not for a privileged few, not only for those who can afford coaching — every student in every village school, every job seeker, every freelancer, every parent helping a child with homework. We measure our success by one question: how many Bangladeshis speak, write and work in English with confidence because of EnglishBD?
