"কোথায় যাচ্ছেন?" — where are you going? — is one of the friendliest things you can say to a neighbour in Bangladesh. Translate it into English and ask a colleague in the lift, and you have just demanded to know their movements. Small talk is the one part of English where the words are easy and the boundaries are not.

"কোথায় যাচ্ছেন?" — বাংলাদেশে প্রতিবেশীকে বলা সবচেয়ে আন্তরিক কথাগুলোর একটা। ইংরেজিতে অনুবাদ করে লিফটে সহকর্মীকে জিজ্ঞেস করুন, আর আপনি এইমাত্র তাঁর গতিবিধির হিসাব চেয়ে বসলেন। Small talk ইংরেজির সেই একটা জায়গা যেখানে শব্দগুলো সহজ, কিন্তু সীমারেখাগুলো নয়।

Small talk is short, low-stakes conversation about neutral things — weather, weekend, traffic, food, the event you are both at. Its purpose is not information. Its purpose is to show you are safe to talk to.

Small talk মানে নিরপেক্ষ বিষয় নিয়ে ছোট, ঝুঁকিহীন কথা — আবহাওয়া, ছুটির দিন, যানজট, খাবার, যে অনুষ্ঠানে দুজনেই আছেন। এর উদ্দেশ্য তথ্য নয়। এর উদ্দেশ্য বুঝিয়ে দেওয়া যে আপনার সাথে কথা বলা নিরাপদ।

আগে যন্ত্রটা শিখে নিন, কারণ ইংরেজি small talk-এর সবচেয়ে কার্যকর হাতিয়ার একটাই — question tag। "It's really hot today, isn't it?" "That was a long meeting, wasn't it?" "You've been here a while, haven't you?" বাংলায় আমরা বাক্যের শেষে "না?" বসাই, আর সেখান থেকে ইংরেজিতে বেরিয়ে আসে "Weather is very nice, no?" — অর্থটা বোঝা যায়, কিন্তু গঠনটা ইংরেজির নয়। নিয়মটা সহজ: বাক্য হ্যাঁ-বাচক হলে tag না-বাচক, আর বাক্য না-বাচক হলে tag হ্যাঁ-বাচক — "It isn't very cold, is it?" সন্দেহ হলে "right?" বসিয়ে দিন, ওটা সব ক্ষেত্রেই চলে। বিষয়ের তালিকাটা ছোট আর নিরাপদ: আবহাওয়া, সপ্তাহান্ত ("How was your weekend?"), যাতায়াত ও যানজট, খেলা, খাবার ও নতুন কোনো রেস্টুরেন্ট, আর যে জায়গায় আপনারা দুজন আছেন। যা এড়াতে হবে তার তালিকাটাই আমাদের জন্য বেশি জরুরি, কারণ এগুলো বাংলাদেশে নিতান্ত স্বাভাবিক প্রশ্ন: বেতন কত, বাসা ভাড়া কত, বিয়ে করেছেন কি না, বাচ্চা হচ্ছে না কেন, ওজন বেড়েছে না কমেছে। এগুলো ইংরেজিভাষী পরিবেশে ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু ছাড়া কেউ জিজ্ঞেস করেন না। আমাদের দুটো প্রিয় সম্ভাষণ ইংরেজিতে অনুবাদ করা যায় না। "ভাত খেয়েছেন?" — আক্ষরিক অনুবাদ "Have you eaten?" শুনলে ইংরেজিভাষী ভাববেন আপনি তাঁকে খেতে ডাকছেন, আর একটু অস্বস্তিতে পড়বেন। "কোথায় যাচ্ছেন?" — "Where are you going?" শুনতে জেরার মতো। দুটোর কাজটাই যে বাক্যগুলো করে: "How's it going?", "How's your day going?", "How's everything?" — এগুলোতে কোনো তথ্য চাওয়া হচ্ছে না, শুধু উষ্ণতা জানানো হচ্ছে, ঠিক যেমন বাংলা সম্ভাষণেও ভাত খাওয়ার খবর কেউ সত্যিই জানতে চায় না। আর একটা কথা যেটা বাংলাদেশি পেশাজীবীদের বিদেশি দলে সবচেয়ে বেশি কাজে লাগে। আমরা অনেকেই small talk-কে অপ্রয়োজনীয় বকবক মনে করি — কাজের কথা বলাই তো ভদ্রতা। পশ্চিমা কর্মক্ষেত্রে মিটিং শুরুর আগের ওই দুই মিনিট, লিফটের ত্রিশ সেকেন্ড, চা বানানোর সময়ের কথাগুলো — এগুলোই সম্পর্ক তৈরির জায়গা, আর যিনি এখানে চুপ থাকেন তাঁকে ঠান্ডা বা দূরের মানুষ ভাবা হয়। কথোপকথন চালিয়ে নিতে একটাই কৌশল: উত্তরের ভেতর থেকে একটা শব্দ ধরে পরের প্রশ্ন করুন, আর মাঝে মাঝে নিজের কথাও একটু দিন — শুধু প্রশ্ন করে গেলে ওটা আলাপ নয়, সাক্ষাৎকার হয়ে যায়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

What is your salary?
What do you do? / How's work going?
Money is too personal for small talk in English. Ask about their work in general, not their pay.
Have you eaten? (as a greeting)
How's your day going?
'Have you eaten?' translates 'ভাত খেয়েছেন?' and confuses English speakers as small talk. Ask about their day instead.
Where are you going?
How's everything with you?
'Where are you going?' sounds like you're checking on them; it is not neutral small talk in English.
Weather is very nice, no?
The weather is really nice, isn't it?
Use a proper question tag ('isn't it?') instead of the translated 'no?'.
