How to Make Small Talk in English
How to Make Small Talk in English
Introduction
Small talk is the light, friendly chat we make before real conversation begins — about the weather, the weekend or a shared situation. It breaks the ice at work, at parties and while waiting in a queue.
Definition
Small talk is short, easy conversation about neutral topics ('Nice weather today, isn't it?') that helps people feel comfortable. It is not about sharing deep or personal information.
Small talk হলো নিরপেক্ষ বিষয় নিয়ে সংক্ষিপ্ত, সহজ কথা ('Nice weather today, isn't it?')
Bangla Explanation
নিরাপদ বিষয়গুলো মনে রাখুন: আবহাওয়া ("Nice weather today, isn't it?"), weekend ("How was your weekend?"), খেলা ("Did you catch the match last night?"), পরিবেশ ("This place is really busy today, isn't it?")। বাংলা অভ্যাস থেকে সরাসরি "Have you eaten?" বা "Where are you going?" small talk হিসেবে বলবেন না; বলুন "How's your day going?"।

Common Mistakes
What is your salary?
What do you do? / How's work going?
Money is too personal for small talk in English. Ask about their work in general, not their pay.
Have you eaten? (as a greeting)
How's your day going?
'Have you eaten?' translates 'ভাত খেয়েছেন?' and confuses English speakers as small talk. Ask about their day instead.
Where are you going?
How's everything with you?
'Where are you going?' sounds like you're checking on them; it is not neutral small talk in English.
Weather is very nice, no?
The weather is really nice, isn't it?
Use a proper question tag ('isn't it?') instead of the translated 'no?'.
