Common English Conversation Starters
Common English Conversation Starters (ইংরেজি কথা শুরুর বাক্য)
Introduction
A conversation starter is the first question or comment that opens a chat. A good starter is friendly and easy to answer, giving the other person something to talk about right away.
Definition
Conversation starters are short, open questions or comments — 'What do you do?', 'How do you know the host?' — used to begin talking with someone, especially a person you don't know well.
Conversation starter হলো সংক্ষিপ্ত, খোলা প্রশ্ন বা মন্তব্য — 'What do you do?', 'How do you know the host?'
Bangla Explanation
কাজ নিয়ে: "What do you do?" । পড়াশোনা নিয়ে: "What are you studying?"। জায়গা নিয়ে: "How do you know the host?" বা "Is this your first time here?"। শখ নিয়ে: "What do you like to do in your free time?"। মনে রাখবেন — "What is your qualification?" বা "What is your good name?" অস্বাভাবিক; বলুন "What do you do?" এবং "What's your name?"।

Common Mistakes
What is your qualification?
What do you do? / What are you studying?
'Qualification' sounds like a form. Ask naturally about their work or studies.
What is your good name?
What's your name?
'Good name' is a translation habit; English speakers simply ask 'What's your name?'.
You are married?
(save personal questions for later)
Marriage, salary and age are too personal as opening questions with someone you just met.
Give me your introduction.
Tell me a little about yourself.
'Give me your introduction' sounds like an order; 'Tell me a little about yourself' is warm and natural.
Tips
- Use open questions ('What…?', 'How…?') so the person can answer with more than yes or no. — খোলা প্রশ্ন করুন ('What…?', 'How…?')
- Start with light, neutral topics — work, studies, the event — before anything personal. —
- Listen to the answer and ask a follow-up; a starter only works if you keep it going.

What is the safest all-purpose conversation starter?
'What do you do?' works almost everywhere for adults, and 'What are you studying?' works with students. Both are open, neutral and easy to answer.
How do I start a conversation without sounding awkward?
Comment on the shared situation first ('This event is great, isn't it?'), then follow with an open question. Referring to something you both see makes the opening feel natural.
What should I do after my starter question?
Really listen to the answer and ask a follow-up based on it. For example, if they say they're an engineer, ask 'Oh, what kind of engineering?' Following up shows genuine interest.
