টাকা নিয়ে ইংরেজিতে কথা বলার সময় কয়েকটি জোড়া শব্দে বাংলাদেশি শিক্ষার্থীরা প্রায়ই গুলিয়ে ফেলে। 'Deposit' মানে অ্যাকাউন্টে টাকা জমা দেওয়া, আর 'withdraw' মানে টাকা তোলা। 'Borrow' মানে ধার নেওয়া (আমি নিই), আর 'lend' মানে ধার দেওয়া (আমি দিই) — এই দুটি উল্টো। মনে রাখবেন 'money' একটি uncountable শব্দ, তাই 'moneys' বা 'a money' বলা যায় না; গুনতে হলে বলুন 'an amount of money' বা মুদ্রার নাম (taka, dollar)। 'Lakh' ও 'crore' দক্ষিণ এশিয়ায় বোঝা গেলেও আন্তর্জাতিক ইংরেজিতে 'hundred thousand' ও 'ten million' বলা নিরাপদ। গুরুত্বপূর্ণ শব্দ: account (হিসাব/অ্যাকাউন্ট), balance (ব্যালেন্স/অবশিষ্ট টাকা), interest (সুদ), loan (ঋণ), instalment (কিস্তি), budget (বাজেট), salary (বেতন), afford (সামর্থ্য থাকা)।

Can you lend me 500 taka?
You 'lend' money to someone (give it); you 'borrow' money from someone (take it). Ask the giver to 'lend'.
I have many moneys in my account.
I have a lot of money in my account.
'Money' is uncountable, so there is no 'moneys'. Use 'a lot of money' or 'much money'.
I want to withdraw money to my account.
I want to deposit money into my account. / I want to withdraw money from my account.
'Deposit' puts money in; 'withdraw' takes it out. The prepositions 'into' and 'from' follow this direction.

What is the difference between 'borrow' and 'lend'?
You 'borrow' money from someone (you take it and must return it). You 'lend' money to someone (you give it out). The bank lends; the customer borrows.
Is 'money' countable in English?
No. 'Money' is uncountable, so there is no 'moneys' and you cannot say 'a money'. Say 'some money', 'a lot of money', or name the amount: 'five hundred taka'.
Should I use 'lakh' and 'crore' in English?
They are understood across South Asia, but for an international audience it is safer to use 'hundred thousand' (lakh) and 'ten million' (crore), or write the full number.
