Common English Collocations: Words That Go Together
Collocation (যে শব্দগুলো একসাথে বসে)
Introductionভূমিকা
A collocation is a pair of words that English habitually puts together. 'Heavy rain' is normal English; 'strong rain' is not — both are grammatically perfect, and only one of them sounds like something a person would say. Collocations are the difference between a sentence that is correct and a sentence that sounds like it was translated word by word.
যে শব্দজোড়া ইংরেজিতে অভ্যাসবশত একসাথে বসে, তাকেই বলে collocation। 'Heavy rain' স্বাভাবিক ইংরেজি, 'strong rain' নয় — ব্যাকরণে দুটোই ঠিক, কিন্তু একটাই মানুষের মুখের ভাষা। এই জিনিসটাই ঠিক বাক্য আর অনুবাদ-অনুবাদ শোনানো বাক্যের পার্থক্য গড়ে দেয়।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A collocation is a combination of words that regularly occurs together — make a mistake, do homework, heavy traffic, pay attention. There is no rule that predicts which words pair up, so a collocation is learned as one whole piece, the way you learn a single word rather than the way you apply a grammar rule.
যেসব শব্দ নিয়মিত একসাথে বসে সেই জোড়াই collocation — make a mistake, do homework, heavy traffic, pay attention। কোন শব্দ কোন শব্দের সাথে বসবে তা আগে থেকে বলে দেওয়ার কোনো নিয়ম নেই, তাই এগুলো ব্যাকরণের নিয়মের মতো নয়, একটা আস্ত শব্দের মতোই মুখস্থ করতে হয়।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
বাংলায় একটা 'করা' দিয়েই অনেক কাজ চলে — ভুল করা, পড়া করা, গোসল করা, ফোন করা, ব্যবসা করা। ইংরেজিতে এই একটা কাজ পাঁচটা আলাদা verb-এর মধ্যে ভাগ হয়ে গেছে, আর সেখানেই গোলমালটা বাধে। মোটামুটি ভাগটা এমন: make সাধারণত কিছু তৈরি হয় বা একটা ফল দাঁড়ায় এমন জায়গায় — make a mistake, make a decision, make a plan, make a phone call, make money, make friends, make noise, make progress। do বসে কাজ বা দায়িত্বের জায়গায় — do homework, do business, do the shopping, do the dishes, do a favour, do your best। take বসে নেওয়া বা গ্রহণ করার জায়গায় — take medicine, take a photo, take a bath, take a rest, take a bus, take an exam। have বসে খাওয়া বা অভিজ্ঞতার জায়গায় — have breakfast, have tea, have a look, have a problem, have fun। pay-এর সাথে — pay attention, pay a visit, pay a fine, pay a bill। আর give-এর সাথে — give advice, give an example, give a speech, give someone a hand। 'attention — মনোযোগ' লিখে রাখলে পরে 'do attention' লিখবেন; 'pay attention to something — মনোযোগ দেওয়া' লিখে রাখলে ভুলটা আর হবে না। অভিধানে উদাহরণ বাক্যগুলো এই কারণেই দেওয়া থাকে — অর্থ নয়, সঙ্গী দেখার জন্য।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- Rahim made a mistake on the first page of his exam paper.রহিম পরীক্ষার খাতার প্রথম পাতাতেই একটা ভুল করেছিল। (make a mistake — 'do' নয়)

- There was heavy traffic on the way to Motijheel.মতিঝিলে যাওয়ার পথে প্রচণ্ড যানজট ছিল। (heavy traffic — 'big' নয়)

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
I did a big mistake in the interview.
I made a big mistake in the interview.
Bangla covers make, do, take and have with one verb, করা, so 'ভুল করা' comes out as 'do a mistake'. English fixes 'make' to mistake and 'do' to homework, with no logic behind the split.
I gave the exam in April.
I took the exam in April.
Bangla পরীক্ষা দেওয়া uses দেওয়া, which translates as 'give', so the student ends up saying the sentence a teacher would say. In English the student takes or sits an exam; the teacher sets it.
Eat this medicine after lunch.
Take this medicine after lunch.
Bangla ওষুধ খাওয়া uses the verb for eating, and it is carried straight across. English uses 'take' for medicine, whether it is a tablet or a syrup.
There was strong rain last night.
There was heavy rain last night.
'জোরে বৃষ্টি' suggests 'strong', but English pairs rain with heavy. Wind and tea take strong; rain, traffic and a schedule take heavy.
He did a phone call to his brother in Malaysia.
He made a phone call to his brother in Malaysia.
Same করা problem. Anything you produce or bring into existence — a call, a plan, a decision, a noise — goes with 'make'.
Tipsটিপস
- Write the whole phrase in your notebook, not the single word: 'pay attention to', not 'attention'. — খাতায় একলা শব্দ নয়, আস্ত টুকরোটা লিখুন: 'attention' নয়, 'pay attention to'।
- When you are stuck between make and do: make is for producing a result, do is for performing an activity. It works often enough to be useful, but check the dictionary for anything important. — make না do বুঝতে না পারলে: কিছু তৈরি বা ফল দাঁড়ায় — make; কোনো কাজ সম্পন্ন করা — do। বেশির ভাগ সময় কাজে দেয়, তবু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ জায়গায় অভিধান দেখে নিন।
- A dictionary's example sentences are there to show you the collocations. Read them even when you already know the meaning. — অভিধানের উদাহরণ বাক্যগুলো collocation দেখানোর জন্যই থাকে। অর্থ জানা থাকলেও ওগুলো পড়ুন।
- Say a new collocation aloud four or five times. Your ear will warn you later, faster than any rule. — নতুন collocation চার-পাঁচবার জোরে বলুন। পরে নিয়ম মনে করার আগেই কান বলে দেবে কোনটা বেখাপ্পা।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is a collocation in English?
It is a group of words that native speakers habitually use together, such as make a decision, heavy rain or pay attention. Nothing in the grammar forbids the other combinations — 'do a decision' breaks no rule — but they are not what English speakers say, so they mark a sentence as translated rather than spoken. Learning the pair as one unit is the whole technique.
Why is 'do a mistake' wrong when it sounds logical?
Because the choice between make and do is a matter of habit, not logic. Bangla uses করা for both, so the learner has no reason to expect a split at all. English attaches make to mistake, decision, plan, phone call and noise, and do to homework, business, shopping, the dishes and your best. There is no deeper reason, which is exactly why it must be memorised rather than reasoned out.
How many collocations should I learn?
Start with the verbs you use every day — make, do, take, have, give, pay — and the four or five nouns that each one carries in your own life: your studies, your work, your travel. Fifty well-chosen collocations used constantly will improve your English more than five hundred copied into a notebook and never spoken.
Is 'heavy rain' the only correct way to say it?
No. 'Heavy rain' is the standard pairing, and 'pouring rain', 'a downpour' and 'it is raining hard' are all natural too. What English does not say is 'strong rain'. When you are unsure, look the noun up in a dictionary and read the example sentences — the adjectives that appear there are the ones that fit.
