Collocations are words that naturally go together — you 'make progress' but 'do research', you face a 'significant increase' not a 'big increase' in formal writing. In IELTS, using the right collocations is how you score highly on Lexical Resource without reaching for rare, risky 'big' words.
Collocation হলো এমন শব্দ যেগুলো স্বাভাবিকভাবে একসাথে বসে — আপনি 'make progress' বলেন কিন্তু 'do research', formal লেখায় 'big increase' নয় বরং 'significant increase' হয়। IELTS-এ সঠিক collocation ব্যবহার করাই হলো বিরল ও ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ শব্দ না খুঁজে Lexical Resource-এ ভালো নম্বর পাওয়ার উপায়।

A collocation is a pair or group of words that native speakers regularly use together, such as 'play a role', 'a wide range of', 'strongly agree', or 'a rapid rise'. Using them correctly makes your writing sound accurate and natural.
Collocation হলো এমন এক জোড়া বা গুচ্ছ শব্দ যা native speaker-রা নিয়মিত একসাথে ব্যবহার করেন, যেমন 'play a role', 'a wide range of', 'strongly agree', বা 'a rapid rise'। এগুলো সঠিকভাবে ব্যবহার করলে আপনার লেখা নির্ভুল ও স্বাভাবিক শোনায়।

IELTS Writing-এ examiner শুধু কঠিন শব্দ নয়, শব্দগুলো একসাথে ঠিকভাবে বসছে কি না তা দেখেন — এটিই Lexical Resource-এর মূল। কিছু কাজে লাগার মতো ধরন: verb + noun (make progress, play a role, address a problem), adjective + noun (significant impact, growing concern, wide range), adverb + adjective (highly effective, widely accepted)। Task 1-এ পরিবর্তন বোঝাতে দরকার — a sharp rise, a steady decline, remain stable, reach a peak। Task 2-তে যুক্তি সাজাতে — play a key role, have a positive effect, tackle the issue। ভুল করে thesaurus থেকে বিরল শব্দ বসাবেন না; বরং কম কিন্তু সঠিক collocation শিখে বারবার ব্যবহার করুন। প্রতিটি নতুন collocation একটি বাক্যে লিখে মুখস্থ করলে পরীক্ষায় সহজে মনে আসে।

Forcing an unnatural word pairing from a thesaurus lowers your score more than a simple correct phrase.

How many collocations should I learn for the exam?
