Common IELTS Cue Card Topics
Common IELTS Cue Card Topics (কিউ কার্ডের প্রচলিত বিষয়)
Introductionভূমিকা
In IELTS Speaking Part 2 the examiner hands you a cue card, gives you one minute to prepare, and then you speak alone for one to two minutes. The good news: the topics repeat. Almost every card asks you to describe a person, a place, an object, an event, or an activity — so a little planning goes a long way.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A cue card is a printed prompt with a main topic and three or four bullet points (who, what, when, why). You must cover the topic while speaking continuously for up to two minutes, then answer one or two follow-up questions.
Cue card হলো একটি ছাপানো নির্দেশনা যাতে একটি মূল বিষয় এবং তিন-চারটি bullet point (who, what, when, why) থাকে। আপনাকে টানা দুই মিনিট পর্যন্ত কথা বলে বিষয়টি বর্ণনা করতে হয়, তারপর এক-দুটি follow-up প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিতে হয়।
Bangla Explanation
Examplesউদাহরণ
- I'd like to talk about a person who has really influenced me — my school English teacher.আমি এমন একজন মানুষ নিয়ে বলতে চাই যিনি সত্যিই আমাকে প্রভাবিত করেছেন — আমার স্কুলের ইংরেজি শিক্ষক।
- The place I want to describe is Cox's Bazar, which I visited a couple of years ago.আমি যে জায়গাটি বর্ণনা করতে চাই সেটি কক্সবাজার, যেখানে কয়েক বছর আগে গিয়েছিলাম।
- The reason I chose this topic is that it means a lot to me personally.এই বিষয়টি বেছে নেওয়ার কারণ হলো এটি ব্যক্তিগতভাবে আমার কাছে অনেক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
- It happened about three years ago, when I was still at university.এটি প্রায় তিন বছর আগে ঘটেছিল, যখন আমি তখনো বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পড়তাম।
- What made it so special was the way everyone came together to help.এটি এত বিশেষ হওয়ার কারণ ছিল সবাই একসাথে সাহায্য করতে এগিয়ে এসেছিল।
- All in all, it's an experience I'll never forget, and I still smile when I think about it.সব মিলিয়ে এটি এমন এক অভিজ্ঞতা যা আমি কখনো ভুলব না, আর এখনো ভাবলে হাসি পায়।
- To be honest, I hadn't thought about this before, but the first thing that comes to mind is my old bicycle.সত্যি বলতে, এটি নিয়ে আগে ভাবিনি, তবে প্রথমেই মনে আসে আমার পুরনো সাইকেলের কথা।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Reading the four bullet points out loud like a list.
Turning each bullet into two or three connected sentences.
The card is a guide, not a script; the examiner scores fluent, extended speech, not a read-out list.
Finishing in 40 seconds and then going silent.
Adding an example, a feeling, or a small story to reach the two-minute mark.
A very short answer gives too little language to assess and lowers your fluency score.
Memorising a full answer word for word.
Preparing flexible ideas and phrases you can adapt to the exact card.
Examiners recognise memorised speech and it often does not fit the question, which is penalised.
Choosing a topic you have no vocabulary for.
Picking the example you can say the most about, even if it's simple.
A familiar topic gives you natural details and keeps you speaking without long pauses.
Tipsটিপস
- Use your one minute to note key words for each bullet, not full sentences. — আপনার এক মিনিট ব্যবহার করে প্রতিটি bullet-এর জন্য key word লিখুন, পুরো বাক্য নয়।
- Keep a few personal 'stories' ready — a trip, a person, a gift — and bend them to fit many cards. — কয়েকটি ব্যক্তিগত 'গল্প' তৈরি রাখুন — একটি ভ্রমণ, একজন মানুষ, একটি উপহার — এবং অনেক card-এ মানিয়ে নিন।
- If you run out of ideas, describe how you felt or why it mattered instead of stopping. — ভাবনা ফুরিয়ে গেলে থেমে না গিয়ে বলুন আপনার কেমন লেগেছিল বা কেন এটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ছিল।
- Signpost with linkers like 'the first thing', 'another reason', and 'in the end' to sound organised. — 'the first thing', 'another reason', 'in the end' — এমন linker দিয়ে বললে গোছানো শোনায়।

1. Plan a two-minute answer for: 'Describe a person who has influenced you.' Write four key words, one per section.
Hint: One key word per bullet is enough — you expand it while speaking.
2. Complete this opener: 'The ___ I'd like to describe is a small café near my house.'
Hint: The topic is a location.
3. Rewrite this as an extended sentence: 'It was fun.' Add why and how it felt.
Hint: Add a reason ('because…') and a feeling word.

What are the most common IELTS cue card topics?
They almost always fall into five groups: describe a person, a place, an object, an event or experience, and an activity or habit. If you prepare one strong example for each group, you can adapt it to most cards.
Can I choose a different topic if I don't like the cue card?
No — you must speak about the card you are given. But you can choose which specific person, place, or event to describe, so pick the one you can say the most about.
Is it bad to pause during Part 2?
A short natural pause is fine, but long silences hurt your fluency score. If you get stuck, describe your feelings or add a small example rather than stopping.
