How to Avoid Run-On Sentences
Introduction
A run-on sentence joins two or more complete ideas without the right punctuation, so it runs on and on and tires the reader. The good news is that three simple tools — a full stop, a comma with a joining word, or a semicolon — fix almost every run-on.
Definition
A run-on sentence is two or more independent clauses (complete sentences) joined without correct punctuation or a joining word.
Bangla Explanation
(২) Comma + joining word (and, but, so, or) দাও।
Examples
- Run-on: I love reading I read every night.ভুল (run-on): I love reading I read every night.
- Fixed with a full stop: I love reading. I read every night.ঠিক (full stop): I love reading. I read every night.
- Fixed with a comma + 'and': I love reading, and I read every night.ঠিক (comma + and): I love reading, and I read every night.
- Comma splice (wrong): She was tired, she kept working.ভুল (comma splice): She was tired, she kept working.
- Fixed with 'but': She was tired, but she kept working.ঠিক (but দিয়ে): She was tired, but she kept working.
- Fixed with a semicolon: She was tired; she kept working.ঠিক (semicolon দিয়ে): She was tired; she kept working.
Common Mistakes
It was raining we stayed home.
It was raining, so we stayed home.
Two complete ideas need a joining word ('so') after the comma, or a full stop.
I finished my work, I went to sleep.
I finished my work, and I went to sleep.
A comma alone cannot join two full sentences (this is a comma splice).
He is smart he is also kind.
He is smart, and he is also kind.
Insert a comma and 'and' between the two complete clauses.
The bus was late, however I still reached on time.
The bus was late; however, I still reached on time.
Words like 'however' need a semicolon before them, not just a comma.
Tips
- Test each half: if both sides could stand alone, you need real punctuation. —
- When two sentences run together, the safest fix is simply a full stop.
- A comma needs a joining word (and, but, so, or) to link two full sentences. — দুটি পূর্ণ বাক্য জুড়তে comma-র সাথে একটি joining word (and, but, so, or) লাগে।
- Use a semicolon only when the two ideas are closely related.

What exactly is a run-on sentence?
It is two or more complete sentences joined without correct punctuation or a joining word, for example: 'I was tired I went to bed.' It should be split or linked properly.
What is a comma splice?
A comma splice is a type of run-on where only a comma joins two full sentences, like 'She left, he stayed.' Fix it with a full stop, a joining word, or a semicolon.
How can I check my own writing for run-ons?
Read each long sentence and split it at the comma or gap. If both halves are complete sentences on their own, you probably need a full stop, a joining word, or a semicolon.
