Introduction

Two habits from Bangla give this task away instantly. The first is লাখ and কোটি: “Mobile users rose to 18 crore” is perfectly clear in Dhaka and unreadable in London, where the figure is 180 million. The second is “day by day it is increasing” — a sentence carried straight over from Bangla school writing, which describes nothing, quotes no number, and is exactly what the chart was given to you to avoid. Describing data is reporting: what the picture shows, the biggest figure, the smallest, and one line saying what it adds up to. Never why.

Definition

A graph description is a short report of what a chart contains, written in ordinary sentences: an opening line saying what is shown and for what period, two or three figures that actually carry meaning, a comparison between the largest and the smallest, and a closing line giving the overall picture. Numbers go in international units — million and billion, not lakh and crore.

Bangla Explanation

যেমন শিরোনাম যদি হয় “Mobile phone users in Bangladesh, 2015–2024”, তোমার প্রথম বাক্য হতে পারে “The bar graph shows how many people used mobile phones in Bangladesh between 2015 and 2024.” লক্ষ করো — “is showing” নয়, “shows”; চার্ট একটা স্থির তথ্য জানায়, তাই present simple। “Rice accounts for 40 per cent of the total”, “Education takes the smallest share, only 5 per cent”, “Twice as many families use gas as use firewood”, “The number rose from 120 in 2022 to 210 in 2024” — এই ধরনের বাক্যই তোমার লেখাটাকে বর্ণনা বানায়। মনে রেখো, পরিবর্তনের পরিমাণ বলার সময় ইংরেজিতে by লাগে: “increased by 20 per cent”, খালি “increased 20 per cent” নয়। চার্ট কী দেখাচ্ছে — present (“The chart shows…”); ভেতরের তথ্য যদি আগের কোনো বছরের হয় — past (“In 2015 only 90 million people used a phone.”)। “The number increased because people became aware” — এই কথাটা চার্টে কোথাও নেই, তুমি নিজে যোগ করেছ। একইভাবে “day by day it is increasing” জাতীয় কথায় সংখ্যাগুলোই হারিয়ে যায়, অথচ সংখ্যাগুলোর জন্যই তোমাকে চার্টটা দেওয়া হয়েছিল। শেষ ধাপ, একটা সমাপ্তি বাক্য: “Overall, food takes almost half of a family's income, while savings take the least.” শেষে একটা অভ্যাসের কথা, যেটা বাংলা লেখার ধরন থেকে আসে: আমরা শেষে একটা নৈতিক বা আবেগি লাইন জুড়ে দিতে শিখেছি — “So we should be aware of this matter” বা “This is really a matter of great hope for our country”।

Examples

  • The bar graph shows how many people used mobile phones in Bangladesh between 2015 and 2024.
  • According to the pie chart, rice accounts for 40 per cent of a family's monthly spending.“accounts for” মানে অংশ দখল করে আছে — শতকরা বলার সবচেয়ে স্বাভাবিক ক্রিয়া।
  • Spending on education is the smallest item, at only 5 per cent of the total.
  • The number of students using the school library rose from 120 in 2022 to 210 in 2024.পরিবর্তন বোঝাতে rose from … to …
  • Twice as many families cook with gas as with firewood.দ্বিগুণ বোঝাতে twice as many … as …; এতে দুটো সংখ্যা না লিখেও তুলনা হয়ে যায়।
  • The figure fell sharply between March and May, and then remained steady until August.
  • Overall, food takes almost half of a family's income, while savings take the least.

Common Mistakes

  • The graph is showing the number of students.

The graph shows the number of students.

Bangla says “গ্রাফটি দেখাচ্ছে” for a plain fact, so the -ing form comes across into English. A chart simply states something, so it takes the present simple.

  • Sales increased 15 per cent in 2023.

Sales increased by 15 per cent in 2023.

English needs 'by' in front of the size of a change. Bangla marks that idea with a case ending instead of a separate word, so the preposition goes missing.

  • In 2020 year the number was 500.

In 2020 the number was 500.

Bangla says “২০২০ সালে”, and সাল gets translated as 'year'. In English the year is already inside the number, so the extra word is repetition.

  • The number is increasing day by day because people are becoming aware.

The number rose steadily between 2019 and 2024.

The chart shows the rise; it does not show the reason, so the reason is your guess, not data. 'Day by day' also replaces the very figures you were asked to use.

  • The percentage of rice is 40 percentage.

Rice accounts for 40 per cent of the total.

'Percentage' is the idea ('a large percentage'), while 'per cent' is the unit that follows a number — 40 per cent, never 40 percentage.

  • Maximum students come to school by bus.

Most students come to school by bus.

'Maximum' is used for 'most' in everyday Bangladeshi English, but in English it means the highest amount possible, not the majority.

Tips

  • Never copy the chart's caption word for word — say the same thing in your own sentence.
  • Quote two or three figures, not twenty. You are describing the chart, not reading it aloud.
  • The largest and the smallest figures carry most of the meaning — name both.
  • Use the present for what the chart shows, and the past for figures from finished years.
  • Write nothing the chart does not show. A reason you have guessed is not part of a description.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I give my opinion when I describe a graph?

No. Write only what the chart itself shows. An opinion or a reason — 'because people are now more aware' — is information you have added, and a reader checking your answer against the chart will not find it there.

Which tense should I use?

Use the present simple for what the chart does: 'the graph shows', 'rice accounts for'. Use the past for figures belonging to years that are over: 'in 2015 the number was 90 million'. If the chart covers future estimates, use 'is expected to'.

How many numbers should I quote?

Two or three that carry the meaning — usually the largest, the smallest, and any sharp change. Copying every figure from the table turns a description into a list, and it uses up the time you need for the comparison sentences.

What is the difference between 'per cent' and 'percentage'?

'Per cent' follows a number: 40 per cent of the total. 'Percentage' is the idea itself and takes no number in front of it: a large percentage of families. Writing '40 percentage' mixes the two.

Can I use the same words for a bar graph, a line graph and a pie chart?

Most of them, yes — 'shows', 'the largest', 'accounts for', 'compared with'. The difference is that a line graph usually needs movement words such as rose, fell and remained steady, while a pie chart needs share words such as half, a quarter and the largest slice.
