In Academic Writing Task 1 you describe a visual — a graph, chart, table, map or process — in at least 150 words in about 20 minutes. You are not asked for opinions; you report and compare the key information clearly and accurately. A strong overview and the right phrases make the difference.

Task 1 asks you to summarise a visual's main features. It is marked on four equal criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Task 1 counts for one third of your Writing band.

গঠন চারটি অংশে ভাবুন: (১) Introduction — প্রশ্নের বাক্যটি নিজের ভাষায় লিখে বলুন graph-টি কী দেখাচ্ছে; (২) Overview — সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ, এখানে সংখ্যা ছাড়াই মূল প্রবণতা (সবচেয়ে বেশি/কম, বড় পরিবর্তন) ২ বাক্যে বলুন; (৩) ও (৪) Body — মূল তথ্য দল করে সংখ্যা দিয়ে বর্ণনা ও তুলনা করুন। overview না দিলে Task Achievement-এ Band 6-এর বেশি পাওয়া কঠিন। মতামত (I think, In my opinion) দেবেন না — শুধু তথ্য। সময় ভাগ করুন: ২০ মিনিটের বেশি নয়, কারণ Task 2-এর মান দ্বিগুণ। tense ঠিক রাখুন — অতীতের তারিখ হলে past tense, ভবিষ্যৎ প্রক্ষেপণ হলে future। অন্তত ১৫০ শব্দ লিখুন; কম হলে জরিমানা হয়, কিন্তু সংখ্যা গোনায় সময় নষ্ট করবেন না।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
In my opinion, the rise in tourism is a good thing.
Overall, tourism rose steadily across the period.
Task 1 asks you to report data, not give opinions; opinions belong in Task 2.
Writing body paragraphs but no overview.
Adding a clear overview of the main trends after the introduction.
Without an overview, Task Achievement is usually capped at Band 6.
The number of tourists increase in 2019.
The number of tourists increased in 2019.
A past date needs the past tense (increased), a frequent tense slip in Task 1.

- Write the overview first — two sentences on the biggest trends, with no specific numbers. — প্রথমে overview লিখুন — সবচেয়ে বড় প্রবণতা নিয়ে দুই বাক্য, কোনো নির্দিষ্ট সংখ্যা ছাড়া।
- Vary your language for change: rose, increased, climbed, surged; fell, dropped, declined. — পরিবর্তনের জন্য ভাষায় বৈচিত্র্য আনুন: rose, increased, climbed, surged; fell, dropped, declined।
- Spend no more than 20 minutes here so Task 2, which is worth double, gets its 40 minutes. — এখানে ২০ মিনিটের বেশি নয়, যাতে দ্বিগুণ মানের Task 2 তার ৪০ মিনিট পায়।

Do I lose marks for writing fewer than 150 words?
Yes. If your answer is under 150 words, you are penalised on Task Achievement, so always meet the minimum. Do not waste time counting exactly — write a little over to be safe.
Can I give my opinion in Academic Task 1?
No. Task 1 is a factual report of the visual. Opinions, reasons and recommendations are only for Task 2. Stick to describing and comparing the data.
Which is more important, Task 1 or Task 2?
Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1 in your Writing band, so protect its 40 minutes. Still, a weak Task 1 pulls your Writing score down, so a solid overview and accurate data both matter.
