IELTS does not have a pass or fail. Instead, each skill is reported on a 0–9 band scale, and the four bands are averaged into an overall band. Knowing what each band means, and how the average is rounded, helps you set a realistic target and plan your study.
IELTS-এ পাশ-ফেল নেই। বরং প্রতিটি দক্ষতা 0–9 band স্কেলে দেওয়া হয়, আর চারটি band-এর গড় করে overall band হয়। প্রতিটি band-এর অর্থ এবং গড় কীভাবে round হয় তা জানলে বাস্তবসম্মত লক্ষ্য ঠিক করে পড়াশোনার পরিকল্পনা করা সহজ হয়।

A band score is a level from 0 (did not attempt) to 9 (expert user). Each whole and half band has a descriptor — for example, Band 7 is a 'good user' and Band 6 is a 'competent user'.
Band score হলো 0 (চেষ্টা করেনি) থেকে 9 (expert user) পর্যন্ত একটি স্তর। প্রতিটি পূর্ণ ও অর্ধ band-এর একটি বর্ণনা আছে — যেমন Band 7 হলো 'good user' এবং Band 6 হলো 'competent user'।

প্রতিটি অংশ (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) আলাদা band পায়। Listening ও Reading-এ ৪০টি প্রশ্নের মধ্যে সঠিক উত্তরের সংখ্যা (raw score) থেকে band বের হয় — যেমন Listening-এ প্রায় ৩০/৪০ সাধারণত Band 7, আর ২৩/৪০ প্রায় Band 6। Writing ও Speaking-এ পরীক্ষক চারটি মানদণ্ডে (criteria) নম্বর দেন। এরপর চারটি band-এর গড় করে Overall Band হয়, যা নিকটতম অর্ধ বা পূর্ণ band-এ round হয়: .25 উপরে গিয়ে .5 হয় এবং .75 উপরে গিয়ে পরের পূর্ণ band হয়। যেমন 6.25 → 6.5 এবং 6.75 → 7.0। কিন্তু 6.125 → 6.0-তে নামে। তাই সবচেয়ে দুর্বল অংশটি ঠিক করলে overall band দ্রুত বাড়ে।

- In Listening, about 30 correct answers out of 40 is often around Band 7.Listening-এ ৪০-এর মধ্যে প্রায় ৩০টি সঠিক উত্তর সাধারণত প্রায় Band 7।
- An average of 6.75 is rounded up to an overall band of 7.0.6.75 গড় round হয়ে overall band 7.0 হয়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
An overall 6.5 means I got 6.5 in every section.
An overall 6.5 is the rounded average of your four section bands.
You can score 7, 6, 7, 6 and still average to 6.5, so sections can differ from the overall.
6.4 rounds down to 6.0.
6.375 rounds to 6.5, because it is closer to 6.5 than to 6.0.
The average is rounded to the nearest half band; .25 and above moves up to the next half.
Half bands like 6.5 do not exist in IELTS.
Whole and half bands (6.0, 6.5, 7.0) are all reported.
Every section and the overall score can be a half band, which affects which requirement you meet.

Is a half band like 6.5 possible in every section?
Yes. Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking can each be reported as a whole or half band, and so can the overall score.
How do raw scores become band scores?
In Listening and Academic Reading, your number of correct answers out of 40 is converted to a band using a standard table. Roughly, 30/40 in Listening is about Band 7 and 23/40 is about Band 6, though exact cut-offs vary by test.
Can I improve my overall band without retaking every section?
Yes — you only need a better average. Focus on your weakest section, because lifting the lowest band raises the average the fastest.
