A graph or chart turns numbers into a picture, so you can understand a lot of information in a few seconds. In IELTS, in the newspaper, and at work you will meet them in English, and reading them is a skill you can learn. This guide shows you the parts of a chart and how to read the story the data is telling.

Reading a graph or chart means using its title, axis labels, and legend to understand what is being measured, and then reading the shapes — bars, lines, or slices — to see the comparison or trend.
একটি গ্রাফ বা চার্ট পড়া মানে এর শিরোনাম, অক্ষের লেবেল ও legend দিয়ে বোঝা কী মাপা হচ্ছে, তারপর আকৃতিগুলো — bar, line বা slice — পড়ে তুলনা বা প্রবণতা (trend) দেখা।

সব সময় শিরোনাম (title) দিয়ে শুরু করো — এটি বলে দেয় চার্টটি কী নিয়ে। তারপর দুটি অক্ষ (axis) দেখো: নিচের আনুভূমিক রেখা হলো x-axis, আর পাশের উল্লম্ব রেখা হলো y-axis। সাধারণত x-axis-এ সময় (মাস, বছর) আর y-axis-এ পরিমাণ (টাকা, শতাংশ, সংখ্যা) থাকে। অক্ষের একক (unit) খেয়াল করো — সংখ্যা কি শত, হাজার, নাকি শতাংশে? যদি রঙ বা একাধিক রেখা থাকে, তাহলে legend বা key দেখো — এটি বলে দেয় কোন রঙ কোন জিনিস বোঝায়। চার্টের ধরন বোঝো: bar chart জিনিস তুলনা করে, line graph সময়ের সাথে পরিবর্তন দেখায়, আর pie chart পুরো জিনিসের ভাগ (share) দেখায়। প্রবণতার শব্দ শেখো: rise / increase / go up (বাড়া), fall / decrease / drop (কমা), peak (সর্বোচ্চ বিন্দু), stable / steady (একই থাকা)। শেষে একটি-দুটি নির্দিষ্ট বিন্দুর মান পড়ো — কোনটি সবচেয়ে বড়, কোনটি সবচেয়ে ছোট, আর মোট প্রবণতা কী।

- A line going up means the value rose or increased.রেখা উপরে গেলে বোঝায় মান বেড়েছে বা increase হয়েছে।

- The highest point on a line is called the peak.রেখার সর্বোচ্চ বিন্দুকে peak বলা হয়।
- In a pie chart, the biggest slice is the largest share.pie chart-এ সবচেয়ে বড় slice হলো সবচেয়ে বড় ভাগ।
- The legend (key) tells you what each colour or line means.legend (key) বলে দেয় প্রতিটি রঙ বা রেখা কী বোঝায়।
- 'Sales rose sharply from 100 to 500 units in June.''Sales rose sharply from 100 to 500 units in June.' — বিক্রি জুনে ১০০ থেকে ৫০০ ইউনিটে দ্রুত বেড়েছে।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Reading the numbers without checking the unit on the axis.
Check whether the axis is in hundreds, thousands, or percentages first.
A bar of '5' can mean 5, 5,000, or 5% — the unit on the axis decides the real value.
Looking at the shapes before reading the title.
Read the title and axis labels first, then look at the bars or lines.
Without the title you do not know what is being measured, so the shapes have no meaning.
Confusing the x-axis (bottom) with the y-axis (side).
Remember: x is horizontal (usually time), y is vertical (usually amount).
Swapping the axes makes you describe the trend backwards and misread the data.
Thinking a steep line always means very large numbers.
Check the scale — a small range on the y-axis can make a small change look steep.
Chart makers sometimes zoom the scale, so a steep line may show only a tiny real change.
