There are two ways to read English and they do different jobs. Extensive reading is long, easy and fast — many pages you can follow without stopping, which is what builds speed and the feel of natural English. Intensive reading is short, hard and slow, done with a pen — one paragraph taken apart, which is what exam answers are made of. People who feel stuck are often doing only one of the two.

Extensive reading means reading a lot of easy material for meaning and enjoyment, without stopping for every word. Intensive reading means working closely through a short, difficult text for exact understanding — the way a comprehension passage is read.
Extensive reading মানে সহজ লেখা প্রচুর পরিমাণে পড়া — অর্থ ও আনন্দের জন্য, প্রতিটি শব্দে না থেমে। Intensive reading মানে ছোট ও কঠিন একটি লেখা খুঁটিয়ে পড়া, যাতে ঠিক অর্থটি বোঝা যায় — comprehension passage যেভাবে পড়া হয়।

সহজ করে বললে, extensive reading গতির জন্য আর intensive reading নিখুঁততার জন্য। Extensive-এ লেখাটি এমন সহজ হতে হবে যে না থেমেই এগোনো যায়; কঠিন হলে সেটা আর extensive থাকে না। বই বাছার একটা মোটামুটি পরীক্ষা আছে — এক পৃষ্ঠা পড়ুন আর যে শব্দগুলো আশপাশ থেকেও বুঝতে পারছেন না, তার প্রতিটির জন্য একটা আঙুল তুলুন; এক পৃষ্ঠায় পাঁচ আঙুল উঠে গেলে বইটি এই মুহূর্তে extensive পড়ার জন্য কঠিন, সহজ কিছু নিন। এটা বইয়ের বিচার নয়, ধাপের বিচার — ছয় মাস পর একই বই সহজ লাগতে পারে। Extensive পড়ার নিয়ম কয়েকটি: অভিধান বন্ধ রাখুন, অচেনা শব্দ পেরিয়ে যান, আর বই পছন্দ না হলে বদলে ফেলুন — শেষ করার দায় নেই। এখানে লাভটা হয় পুনরাবৃত্তিতে; একই সাধারণ শব্দ বিশ পাতায় ছয়বার দেখলে সেটি মুখস্থ না করেই মনে থেকে যায়, আর সেই কারণেই পরিমাণটাই এখানে আসল। Intensive পড়া ঠিক উল্টো। ছোট একটা লেখা নিন — এক পাতার বেশি নয় — কলম নিয়ে বসুন, অনুচ্ছেদে নম্বর দিন, সর্বনাম থেকে তার noun পর্যন্ত তীর টানুন, যোগসূত্রের শব্দ দাগান, অচেনা শব্দ প্রসঙ্গ থেকে অনুমান করে তারপর মিলিয়ে দেখুন, আর শেষে নিজের ভাষায় সারাংশ লিখুন। Comprehension, summary, information transfer — পরীক্ষার সব আইটেমই আসলে intensive পড়ার দক্ষতা। এখন সবচেয়ে দরকারি কথাটি: দুটোকে এক লেখায় মেশাবেন না। উপন্যাস হাতে নিয়ে প্রতিটি অচেনা শব্দ অভিধানে দেখতে বসলে পরিমাণ শূন্য হয়ে যায়, আর পরিমাণটাই ছিল ওই বইটির একমাত্র কাজ। আবার পরীক্ষার passage দ্রুত চোখ বুলিয়ে পড়লে যে সূক্ষ্ম তথ্যের জন্য নম্বর, সেটাই হারায়। ভাগটা সহজ রাখুন — প্রতিদিন কিছুটা সহজ পড়া নিজের আনন্দে, আর সপ্তাহে কয়েকটি ছোট কঠিন লেখা কলম হাতে। বাংলাদেশে সহজ উপকরণ হাতের কাছেই আছে: ইংরেজি দৈনিকের ছোট রিপোর্ট, শিশুদের গল্পের বই, গ্রেডেড রিডার, আর যে খবরটি আগেই বাংলায় পড়েছেন সেটির ইংরেজি সংস্করণ — শেষেরটি বিশেষভাবে কাজে দেয়, কারণ ঘটনাটা জানা থাকলে ভাষাটুকুই শুধু নতুন থাকে।

Volume is the only thing extensive reading gives, and a dictionary stop every few lines removes exactly that. Depth on single words is intensive reading's job, on a different text.
Choosing a famous, difficult novel as your first English book.
Choosing something you can follow without stopping, however simple it looks.
Abandoning a book at page ten is a level mismatch, not a failure of ability — and the easy book that gets finished teaches far more than the hard one that does not.
Reading only exam passages and guide books, then complaining that reading is slow.
