Ask a Bangladeshi student to name an English book and you will usually hear Dickens, Hardy or Shakespeare — the ones on a syllabus. That is exactly the wrong place to begin. Those books are written in the English of a hundred or four hundred years ago, in sentences that even British readers find slow, and starting there is how most people conclude they cannot read English. Begin instead with a book written this decade, for ordinary readers, about something you already care about.

Reading a book well, as a learner, means extensive reading: choosing a book a little below the level you could struggle through, and then reading it fast and smoothly without a dictionary. The aim is not to study the book. The aim is volume — enough English flowing past your eyes that the patterns start to feel normal.

বই বাছাইয়ের পরীক্ষাটা হাতের পাঁচ আঙুলেই হয়ে যায়। বইয়ের মাঝখান থেকে যেকোনো একটা পাতা খুলুন, পড়তে শুরু করুন, আর যতবার অচেনা শব্দ পান একটা করে আঙুল মুড়ুন। পাতা শেষ হওয়ার আগেই পাঁচ আঙুল শেষ হলে বইটা এখন আপনার জন্য নয়। কেউ দেখছে না, কেউ নম্বর দিচ্ছে না — সহজ বই বেছে নেওয়াটাই বুদ্ধিমানের কাজ, লজ্জার কিছু নয়। একই লেখকের বা একই সিরিজের বই পরপর পড়ার একটা বড় সুবিধা আছে, আর এটা কম জানা। একজন লেখকের শব্দভাণ্ডার ও বাক্যের ধরন মোটামুটি স্থির থাকে; তাই তাঁর তৃতীয় বইটা প্রথমটার চেয়ে অনেক সহজ লাগে, যদিও কঠিনতা একই। সিরিজে আরও সুবিধা — চরিত্র ও পটভূমি আগে থেকেই জানা, তাই মাথা কেবল ভাষার দিকে মন দিতে পারে। ইংরেজিতে শিশু ও কিশোরদের জন্য লেখা সিরিজগুলো এই কাজে চমৎকার, আর ওগুলো পড়তে বয়সের কোনো বাধা নেই। পড়ার সময়ের নিয়ম মাত্র দুটো, আর দুটোই কঠিন লাগে প্রথমে। এক, অভিধান বন্ধ। একটা শব্দ না বুঝলে দাগ দিয়ে এগিয়ে যান; একই শব্দ তিনবার এলে তখন দেখুন। এক পাতায় বারবার থামলে গল্পের সুতো ছিঁড়ে যায়, আর সুতো ছিঁড়লে বই ছেড়ে দেওয়ার সম্ভাবনা বাড়ে — যা একটা শব্দ না জানার চেয়ে অনেক বড় ক্ষতি। দুই, অনুবাদ বন্ধ। বাক্যটা ইংরেজিতেই বুঝতে দিন; না বুঝলে এগিয়ে যান, পরের অনুচ্ছেদ প্রায়ই ব্যাখ্যা করে দেয়। বই ছেড়ে দেওয়ার অধিকারটা নিজেকে দিন। আমাদের শেখানো হয়েছে শুরু করলে শেষ করতে হয়, তাই একটা বিরক্তিকর বইয়ে আটকে গিয়ে মানুষ পড়াই বন্ধ করে দেয়। ত্রিশ পাতা পড়ে ভালো না লাগলে বইটা রেখে দিন — কোনো অপরাধবোধ নেই। বই শেষ করা লক্ষ্য নয়; রোজ পড়া লক্ষ্য। আর একটা কথা মাপ নিয়ে, কারণ প্রথম বইটাই সবচেয়ে কঠিন। প্রথম বই শেষ করতে হয়তো তিন মাস লাগবে, দ্বিতীয়টায় ছয় সপ্তাহ, তৃতীয়টায় তিন সপ্তাহ। এই কমে আসাটাই আসল অগ্রগতি, আর এটা টের পাওয়ার জন্য শুরুর তারিখ আর শেষের তারিখ লিখে রাখুন। বছরে দশটা সহজ বই পড়া একজন শিক্ষার্থী দশ পাতার কঠিন গদ্য মুখস্থ করা শিক্ষার্থীর চেয়ে অনেক ভালো ইংরেজি পড়ে — কারণ ভাষা শেখা হয় পরিমাণে, নিবিড়তায় নয়।
