A reference letter request is a short email that asks clearly, gives the deadline, and attaches everything the writer needs so they never have to look anything up.

Sir, I need a reference letter by tomorrow.
The deadline is 30 September — I hope three weeks is enough notice.
Short notice produces either a refusal or a rushed, generic letter, which is worse than no letter.
Sir, I am your student. Please give me a recommendation.
I was in your Marketing Research course in 2023 and did the shopkeeper survey project.
A teacher with hundreds of students cannot write a specific letter from a vague reminder.
Attaching nothing and expecting the teacher to find your details.
Attaching your CV, the job or course description, and a note on your work with them.
Every minute you save the writer goes into the quality of the letter instead of the admin.
Asking five teachers at once without telling any of them.
Asking two, and telling each honestly.
Bangladeshi academic circles are small. Overlapping requests get discovered and damage your standing.

- Ask for a 'strong' letter. If they hesitate, thank them and ask someone else. — 'strong' লেটার চান। দ্বিধা করলে ধন্যবাদ দিয়ে অন্য কাউকে বলুন।
- Give two to three weeks. One week is a request; three days is an imposition. — দুই-তিন সপ্তাহ সময় দিন। এক সপ্তাহ অনুরোধ; তিন দিন চাপ।
- Send a polite reminder five days before the deadline. Teachers expect it and are not offended. — শেষ তারিখের পাঁচ দিন আগে ভদ্রভাবে মনে করিয়ে দিন। শিক্ষকরা এটা আশাই করেন।
- Tell them the result afterwards, whether you got in or not. Almost nobody does, and they remember the ones who do. — ফল যা-ই হোক পরে জানান। প্রায় কেউ জানায় না, আর যারা জানায় তাদের মনে রাখা হয়।

Should I write the letter myself and ask them to sign it?
Some teachers ask for a draft, and if they do, write it honestly. Never offer it first — it implies you expect them not to bother, and some find it insulting.
Who should I ask — the most senior teacher or the one who knows me?
The one who knows you, almost always. A detailed letter from a lecturer beats two vague lines from a professor who cannot remember your face.
Can I ask my current employer for a reference while job hunting?
Carefully. Many people in Bangladesh use a previous manager or a senior colleague instead, so their current employer does not learn they are leaving.
What if they say no?
Thank them and move on quickly. A refusal is usually about their workload or how well they remember you — not a judgement of you.
