Completing a Story: How to Finish the Given Opening

Completing a Story (গল্প সম্পূর্ণ করা)

Introductionভূমিকা

Half the scripts an SSC examiner opens contain the same six stories. The honest woodcutter, the shepherd boy who cried wolf, the two friends and the bear — memorised from a guide book and then bent, by force, to fit whatever opening the question actually gave. The examiner can see the join. Marks here are lost not on grammar but on shape: events with no turning point, or a script that stops rather than ends. A story is a problem, a struggle and a change, and all three have to fit inside about two hundred words you write yourself.

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

Completing a story means continuing the given opening in the same tense, the same person and the same world, so the finished piece reads as one story rather than an opening with a memorised story stapled to it. The two or three lines you are given are not decoration — they are a contract about who the characters are and when this is happening.

Bangla Explanation

**শেষটা ফাঁস করবেন না**: 'The Dishonest Friend Who Was Caught' খারাপ শিরোনাম; 'A Friend in Need' ভালো। ** *"I have found your purse," he said.* এতে গল্প জীবন্ত হয়, আর punctuation-এর দক্ষতাও দেখানো হয়। 2. **সময়সূচক শব্দ বদলান** — then, then, then নয়। ব্যবহার করুন: *suddenly, a moment later, by the time, meanwhile, at last, the next morning*। 3. **অনুভূতি বলবেন না, দেখান।** ❌ *He was very afraid.* ✅ *His hands were shaking as he opened the door.* **চ.

Examplesউদাহরণ

  • Given opening: 'One morning Rahim was going to school. On the way he saw a purse lying on the road…'Past tense, তৃতীয় পুরুষ — পুরো গল্পে এটাই ধরে রাখতে হবে।
  • Problem: 'It was full of money — more than he had ever held. Nobody was watching.'সমস্যা তৈরি হলো: প্রলোভন বনাম সততা।
  • Climax: 'He had almost put it in his bag when he remembered his mother's words.'মোড় — এই মুহূর্তেই গল্প ঘুরে যায়।
  • Resolution: 'He waited by the road until an anxious man came looking for it.'সমাধান — সিদ্ধান্তের ফল।
  • Dialogue: '"Is this yours?" Rahim asked, holding out the purse.'অন্তত একটি সংলাপ গল্পকে জীবন্ত করে।
  • Weak title: 'The Boy Who Returned the Purse Honestly'. Better title: 'The Purse on the Road'.শিরোনাম শেষটা ফাঁস করবে না।
  • Moral: Honesty brings a peace that money cannot buy.এক বাক্যে নীতিকথা, আর তা গল্পের সাথে মিলছে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • Starting in the past and switching to the present halfway through.

Keeping the tense of the given opening from the first line to the last.

Tense consistency is the first thing an examiner notices, and a switch costs marks throughout the piece.

  • Writing a series of events with no turning point.

Building to one moment where a decision, discovery or danger changes everything.

Without a climax the piece is a report, not a story, and the structure marks are lost.

  • A title that gives away the ending, such as 'The Thief Was Caught at Last'.

A short suggestive title, such as 'The Missing Watch'.

A title should invite the reader in, not summarise the last paragraph.

  • A moral that does not match the story you actually wrote.

A moral drawn from the decision your character made.

Examiners check the fit, and a borrowed moral shows the story was not planned.

  • Stopping when the words run out.

Ending with the resolution and what changed for the character.

An unfinished story cannot score for structure however good the sentences are.

Tipsটিপস

  • Spend two minutes planning the four parts before you write a single sentence. একটি বাক্য লেখার আগে দুই মিনিট চার অংশের পরিকল্পনায় দিন।
  • Include at least one line of dialogue — it lifts the piece and shows punctuation skill. অন্তত এক লাইন সংলাপ রাখুন — গল্প জীবন্ত হয়, punctuation-এর দক্ষতাও দেখা যায়।
  • Show feelings through actions: shaking hands rather than 'he was afraid'. অনুভূতি কাজ দিয়ে দেখান: 'সে ভয় পেয়েছিল' নয়, 'তার হাত কাঁপছিল'।
  • Replace repeated 'then' with suddenly, meanwhile, a moment later, at last. বারবার 'then'-এর বদলে suddenly, meanwhile, a moment later, at last ব্যবহার করুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা

How long should the completed story be?

About two hundred words for SSC and a little more for HSC. Length matters far less than having a beginning, a turning point and an ending.

Do I always have to give a moral?

Only if the question asks for one. When it does, write a single line after the story and make sure it matches the events you wrote.

Can I invent characters and places?

Yes, but keep whoever and whatever the opening gave you. Adding a new character is fine; contradicting the opening is not.

Should I use difficult vocabulary?

Use ordinary words correctly and one or two good phrases. A simple story told clearly scores better than a complicated one with errors in every line.
