How to Memorise English Words (and Actually Keep Them)
How to Memorise English Words (ইংরেজি শব্দ মনে রাখার উপায়)
Introductionভূমিকা
Almost everyone has done it: a list of fifty words copied into a notebook, revised the night before an exam, gone within a week. The words were never wrong. The method was.
প্রায় সবাই এটা করেছেন: খাতায় পঞ্চাশটা শব্দের তালিকা, পরীক্ষার আগের রাতে মুখস্থ, এক সপ্তাহে উধাও। শব্দগুলোর দোষ ছিল না। পদ্ধতিটার ছিল।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Memorising vocabulary means moving a word from 'I have seen this' to 'this arrives when I need it'. That transfer needs three things: meeting the word several times over spreading intervals, meeting it inside a sentence, and using it yourself.
শব্দ মনে রাখা মানে একটা শব্দকে 'এটা দেখেছি' থেকে 'দরকারের সময় এটা মনে আসে'-তে নিয়ে যাওয়া। এই স্থানান্তরে তিনটা জিনিস লাগে: ক্রমশ বাড়তে থাকা ব্যবধানে বারবার দেখা, বাক্যের ভেতরে দেখা, আর নিজে ব্যবহার করা।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
ছয়টা পদ্ধতি সত্যিই কাজ করে: (১) **ব্যবধান দিয়ে পুনরাবৃত্তি** — একটা শব্দ আজ, কাল, তিন দিন পর, এক সপ্তাহ পর, এক মাস পর দেখুন। ঠিক ভুলে যাওয়ার মুহূর্তে দেখলে সবচেয়ে গভীরে বসে। (২) **শব্দ নয়, বাক্য মুখস্থ করুন** — 'postpone = স্থগিত করা' মনে থাকবে না, কিন্তু 'They postponed the exam because of the flood' থাকবে।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- postpone — They postponed the exam because of the flood.স্থগিত করা — বন্যার কারণে পরীক্ষা স্থগিত করা হয়েছিল। (বাক্যসহ শিখলে মনে থাকে)
- afford — I can't afford a new phone this month.সামর্থ্য থাকা — এ মাসে নতুন ফোন কেনার সামর্থ্য নেই।
- decide / decision / decisiveসিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া / সিদ্ধান্ত / দৃঢ়প্রতিজ্ঞ (এক পরিবার একসাথে শিখুন)
- crowded ↔ emptyভিড় ↔ ফাঁকা (বিপরীত জোড়া একসাথে মনে থাকে ভালো)
- The bus was so crowded that I stood the whole way.বাসে এত ভিড় ছিল যে পুরো পথ দাঁড়িয়ে এসেছি। (চেনা ঘটনার সাথে জোড়া)
- borrow — Can I borrow your umbrella? / lend — Can you lend me your umbrella?ধার নেওয়া / ধার দেওয়া (গুলিয়ে যাওয়া জোড়া একসাথে শিখুন)
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Writing 50 words in a list with only the Bangla meaning beside each.
Writing 7 words, each inside a full sentence you would actually say.
A bare translation gives your brain nothing to hold on to. A sentence gives it grammar, situation and rhythm all at once.
Revising everything the night before the exam.
Revising a little today, again tomorrow, again next week.
Memory strengthens at the moment of almost-forgetting. Cramming never reaches that moment.
Learning only the meaning, never the pronunciation.
Saying each new word out loud three times when you first meet it.
A word you cannot pronounce stays locked in reading and never becomes speech.
Skipping a word because you 'already know' it after seeing it once.
Keeping it in your review pile for a month anyway.
Recognising a word on a page is a much weaker memory than producing it in conversation, and it fades fast.
Tipsটিপস
- Learn seven words a day, every day. That is over 2,500 in a year — more than enough for daily fluency. — প্রতিদিন সাতটা শব্দ, প্রতিদিন। বছরে ২,৫০০-র বেশি — দৈনন্দিন সাবলীলতার জন্য যথেষ্টের বেশি।
- Use a new word within two days or let it go. Unused words do not survive. — নতুন শব্দ দুদিনের মধ্যে ব্যবহার করুন, নইলে ছেড়ে দিন। অব্যবহৃত শব্দ টেকে না।
- Keep the words you meet in real life — a signboard, a song, a work email — above words from a list. — বাস্তবে যে শব্দ পেলেন — সাইনবোর্ড, গান, অফিসের ইমেইল — তালিকার শব্দের চেয়ে সেগুলো এগিয়ে রাখুন।
- When a word won't stick after four tries, drop it. It will come back naturally when you are ready for it. — চারবার চেষ্টাতেও যে শব্দ বসছে না, ছেড়ে দিন। সময় হলে নিজেই ফিরে আসবে।

1. Pick a new word you met today and write one sentence about your own life with it.
Hint: It must be about you, not a general example.
2. Group these into pairs of opposites: expensive, empty, cheap, crowded.
Hint: Opposites are easier to remember together.
3. Say out loud three times: 'They postponed the meeting until Sunday.'
Hint: Pronunciation is part of memorising, not an extra step.

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
Are flashcards better than a notebook?
Only because they make spaced review easy. A notebook works just as well if you actually go back to page one after a week. Most people don't, which is why apps win.
Should I learn words from a list or from reading?
Both, with reading first. Words met in a real sentence already come with a context your memory can use. Lists are useful for filling gaps in a specific topic — kitchen words before you travel, say.
How many words do I need to speak English comfortably?
Around 2,000–3,000 covers the vast majority of everyday conversation. That is roughly a year at seven words a day — which is why the slow method wins.
Is it useful to memorise words with their Bangla meaning?
At the start, yes. As you improve, switch to an English explanation ('afford — to have enough money for something'), because that is what stops you translating when you speak.
