How to Stop Translating in Your Head
How to Stop Translating in Your Head (মনে মনে অনুবাদ করা বন্ধ করার উপায়)
Introductionভূমিকা
You hear the question. You turn it into Bangla. You build the answer in Bangla. You turn that into English. Then you speak — and the conversation has already moved on. Four steps where a fluent speaker uses one. The good news is that the four steps are a habit, not a limit.
প্রশ্নটা শুনলেন। মনে মনে বাংলা করলেন। বাংলায় উত্তরটা সাজালেন। সেটা ইংরেজি করলেন। তারপর বললেন — আর ততক্ষণে কথা এগিয়ে গেছে। সাবলীল বক্তা যেখানে এক ধাপ ব্যবহার করেন, সেখানে আপনি চার ধাপ। ভালো খবরটা হলো, এই চার ধাপ আপনার সীমা নয়, আপনার অভ্যাস।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Thinking in English means going straight from an idea to English words without passing through Bangla. It is not a talent. It is what happens once enough English is stored as whole phrases instead of as translations of Bangla ones.
ইংরেজিতে ভাবা মানে ভাবনা থেকে সরাসরি ইংরেজি শব্দে যাওয়া, মাঝে বাংলা না ছুঁয়ে। এটা প্রতিভা নয়। যথেষ্ট ইংরেজি যখন বাংলার অনুবাদ হিসেবে নয়, গোটা বাক্যাংশ হিসেবে জমা হয়, তখনই এটা ঘটে।
Bangla Explanation
**Article** (a, an, the) — বাংলায় নেই। **Preposition**-এর ভাগ (in, on, at) — বাংলায় সবকিছুতে একই "-এ"। **Phrasal verb** (give up, put off, look after) — বাংলায় এর সমান কিছু নেই। আর **tense**-এর জোড়াগুলো (I eat / I am eating) — বাংলায় দুটোই "খাই" হতে পারে। এই চারটে জায়গায় অনুবাদ করলে ভুল হবেই, তাই এগুলো গোটা বাক্যাংশ হিসেবে মুখস্থ করা ছাড়া উপায় নেই। পাঁচটা উপায়ে অনুবাদের অভ্যাসটা ভাঙা যায়। **এক**, শব্দ নয়, বাক্যাংশ শিখুন — "I'm on my way", "It's up to you", "Never mind", "I'll let you know"; এগুলো ভাঙা যায় না, তাই অনুবাদও লাগে না। **দুই**, ছবি ধরে শিখুন, অর্থ ধরে নয় — "chair" শব্দটার সাথে "চেয়ার" শব্দটা নয়, একটা চেয়ারের ছবি জুড়ুন। **তিন**, দিনের কাজ ইংরেজিতে বর্ণনা করুন যখন কেউ নেই — "I'm opening the door. The water's hot. This bag is heavier than I thought." "My head is paining" — বাংলায় মাথা ব্যথা করে, তাই ব্যথাটা ক্রিয়া হয়ে যায়; ইংরেজিতে "I have a headache"। "I am eating rice every day" — বাংলায় "খাই" আর "খাচ্ছি" এক শোনায়, তাই অভ্যাস বোঝাতেও continuous বসে যায়; ঠিকটা "I eat rice every day"। "Yesterday I have gone to the market" — বাংলায় "গিয়েছি" অতীত আর পূর্ণ দুটোই বোঝাতে পারে; ইংরেজিতে নির্দিষ্ট অতীত সময় থাকলে past simple, তাই "Yesterday I went"।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- I'm on my way.আমি রওনা দিয়েছি। (শব্দে শব্দে অনুবাদ করতে গেলেই আটকে যাবেন — গোটা বাক্যাংশ হিসেবে মুখস্থ করুন)
- It's up to you.আপনার ইচ্ছা। (বাংলা থেকে বানাতে গেলে এই বাক্য কখনো আসবে না)
- I'm opening the window because the room is hot.ঘর গরম, তাই জানালা খুলছি। (কাজ করতে করতে নিজেকে বলুন)
- This is heavier than I thought.এটা ভেবেছিলাম তার চেয়ে ভারী।
- Never mind, I'll do it later.থাক, পরে করব।
- A chair — the thing you sit on at a table.Chair — টেবিলে বসার জিনিস। (বাংলা অর্থের বদলে ইংরেজি ব্যাখ্যা মনে রাখুন)
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
I am eating rice with my hand every day. (built word-by-word from Bangla)
I eat rice with my hand every day.
Bangla marks habit with the simple present too, but learners reach for the -ing form when translating. Habits take the present simple.
My head is paining.
I have a headache.
A direct translation of 'মাথা ব্যথা করছে' produces English nobody says. Store the English phrase whole instead.
Yesterday I have gone to the market.
Yesterday I went to the market.
Bangla has one past form where English splits into two. Translating hides the distinction; hearing real English teaches it.
Looking up every unknown word in a Bangla dictionary.
Guessing from context first, then checking an English-English definition.
Every Bangla lookup reinforces the translation habit you are trying to break.
Tipsটিপস
- Narrate your cooking, your commute, your chores in English. Nobody has to hear it. — রান্না, যাতায়াত, ঘরের কাজ ইংরেজিতে বর্ণনা করুন। কাউকে শোনাতে হবে না।
- Learn phrases in blocks of three to six words. Blocks resist translation; single words invite it. — তিন থেকে ছয় শব্দের ব্লক ধরে শিখুন। ব্লক অনুবাদ ঠেকায়, একক শব্দ অনুবাদ ডেকে আনে।
- Accept simpler sentences for a few weeks. Simple English you produce beats complex English you translate. — কয়েক সপ্তাহ সহজ বাক্য মেনে নিন। নিজে বানানো সহজ ইংরেজি, অনুবাদ করা জটিল ইংরেজির চেয়ে ভালো।
- When you catch yourself translating, say the English half-sentence anyway and finish it badly. — অনুবাদ করছেন টের পেলে ইংরেজি অর্ধেক বাক্যটাই বলে ফেলুন, খারাপভাবে হলেও শেষ করুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
Is translating always bad?
No. At the very beginning it is how anyone starts, and for a difficult new word it is quick and useful. The problem is only when it stays as your main route to every sentence.
How long does it take to start thinking in English?
For simple everyday topics, most learners notice it within a month of daily narration. It arrives topic by topic, not all at once — you will think in English about your morning routine long before you can about politics.
Should I stop using a Bangla dictionary completely?
Not completely. Use Bangla for abstract or technical words, and English-English definitions for everyday ones — that is where the translation habit is strongest and easiest to break.
I think in English but my grammar is wrong. Is that progress?
Yes, and it is the normal middle stage. Fluency arrives before accuracy. Keep speaking, keep listening, and the grammar tightens on its own.
