How to Guess Word Meaning from Context
How to Guess Word Meaning from Context (প্রসঙ্গ থেকে শব্দের অর্থ অনুমান)
Introductionভূমিকা
When you meet a new word, you do not always need a dictionary. The words around it — the context — often reveal the meaning. Guessing from context keeps your reading fast, builds vocabulary naturally, and is a skill every strong reader uses without thinking.
নতুন শব্দ দেখলে সবসময় অভিধান লাগে না। শব্দটির আশেপাশের শব্দ — অর্থাৎ context — প্রায়ই অর্থ দেখিয়ে দেয়। Context থেকে অনুমান করলে পড়া দ্রুত থাকে, শব্দভাণ্ডার স্বাভাবিকভাবে বাড়ে, আর প্রতিটি ভালো পাঠক না ভেবেই এই দক্ষতা ব্যবহার করে।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Guessing meaning from context means using clues in the surrounding sentence — examples, opposites, definitions, or the general idea — to work out what an unknown word probably means.
Context থেকে অর্থ অনুমান করা মানে আশেপাশের বাক্যের সূত্র — উদাহরণ, বিপরীত শব্দ, সংজ্ঞা বা সাধারণ ভাব — ব্যবহার করে অজানা শব্দটির সম্ভাব্য অর্থ বের করা।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
নতুন শব্দ দেখলেই থেমো না — আগে চারপাশে সূত্র খোঁজো। কয়েক ধরনের সূত্র আছে। উদাহরণ-সূত্র: 'Fruits like mangoes and bananas' — তাই fruit মানে আম-কলার মতো কিছু। বিপরীত-সূত্র: 'He was generous, not selfish' — 'not selfish' বলে দিচ্ছে generous মানে উদার। সংজ্ঞা-সূত্র: 'A pediatrician, a doctor for children, ...'

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Stopping to look up every unknown word in a dictionary.
Try the context clues first; only look up words you still need.
Constant dictionary use breaks your flow and slows reading; most meanings are guessable from the sentence.
Guessing a meaning but never checking it against the sentence.
Put your guessed meaning back into the sentence to see if it fits.
An untested guess can be wrong; fitting it back in confirms whether it makes sense.
Ignoring signal words like 'but', 'such as', and 'unlike'.
Watch these words — they point directly to the meaning.
Signal words tell you whether a clue is an example, a definition, or an opposite, which makes guessing much easier.
Giving up as soon as one word looks difficult.
Read to the end of the sentence before deciding you are stuck.
The clue often comes after the hard word, so finishing the sentence usually reveals the meaning.
Tipsটিপস
- Read to the end of the sentence before you judge a new word. — নতুন শব্দ বিচার করার আগে বাক্যের শেষ পর্যন্ত পড়ো।
- Ask if the sentence feels positive or negative — it narrows the meaning. — বাক্যটি ইতিবাচক না নেতিবাচক জিজ্ঞেস করো — অর্থ সংকীর্ণ হয়।
- Look for 'such as', 'like', or a comma that gives an example or definition. — 'such as', 'like' বা কমা খোঁজো — এগুলো উদাহরণ বা সংজ্ঞা দেয়।
- Test your guess by replacing the hard word with it. — কঠিন শব্দের জায়গায় নিজের অনুমান বসিয়ে যাচাই করো।

Is guessing from context better than using a dictionary?
For most reading, yes. Guessing keeps you moving and helps words stick in memory. Use a dictionary only when a word is important and the context does not make its meaning clear.
What kinds of context clues should I look for?
Look for examples ('such as'), definitions set off by commas, opposites ('unlike', 'but'), and the general positive or negative feeling of the sentence. Each one points toward the meaning.
How does guessing from context build my vocabulary?
When you work out a word yourself, your brain remembers it far better than a meaning you simply read. Meeting the same word in different sentences then fixes it firmly in memory.
