Introductionভূমিকা

Two words get a Bangladeshi speaker into trouble more than any others when describing someone. We call a well-mannered boy “gentle”, because ভদ্র feels like it should map onto the word inside “gentleman” — but English “gentle” means soft-handed and mild, not well-behaved; the word you want is polite. And we call a good-natured person “simple”, meaning সহজ-সরল, while an English listener hears that the person is a bit slow-witted. Describing people is where a translated word does the most damage, because the person is standing right there.

কাউকে বর্ণনা করতে গিয়ে বাংলাভাষীরা দুটো শব্দে সবচেয়ে বেশি বিপদে পড়েন। ভদ্র ছেলেকে আমরা বলি “gentle”, কারণ “gentleman”-এর ভেতরের শব্দটাই তো ভদ্র মনে হয় — কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে gentle মানে নরম, মৃদু, আচরণে ভদ্র নয়; দরকারি শব্দটা polite। আর সহজ-সরল মানুষকে বলি “simple”, অথচ ইংরেজ কানে সেটা শোনায় “লোকটা একটু বোকা”। মানুষের বর্ণনাতেই অনুবাদ করা শব্দ সবচেয়ে বেশি ক্ষতি করে, কারণ মানুষটা তখন সামনেই দাঁড়িয়ে থাকে।

Words that describe people fall into three groups: character (honest, generous, stubborn), temporary state (tired, bored, upset) and appearance (tall, slim, fair). English keeps them apart more strictly than Bangla does, and picking from the wrong group is what makes a compliment land as an insult.

মানুষকে বর্ণনা করার শব্দ তিন ভাগে পড়ে: স্বভাব (honest, generous, stubborn), সাময়িক অবস্থা (tired, bored, upset) আর চেহারা (tall, slim, fair)। বাংলার চেয়ে ইংরেজি এই তিন ভাগকে অনেক কড়া করে আলাদা রাখে, আর ভুল ভাগ থেকে শব্দ তুললেই প্রশংসা গালি হয়ে যায়।

স্বভাব বোঝানোর শব্দগুলো আগে ঠিক করে নিন, কারণ এগুলোই সবচেয়ে বেশি লাগে: generous (উদার, দিতে কার্পণ্য নেই), honest (সৎ), hardworking (পরিশ্রমী), polite (ভদ্র, নম্র), friendly (মিশুক), shy (লাজুক), stubborn (একগুঁয়ে), selfish (স্বার্থপর), reliable (ভরসা করা যায় এমন)। খেয়াল করুন, পরিশ্রমী মানুষকে ইংরেজিতে “hardworker” বলা হয় না — বলা হয় “a hard worker” বা “hardworking”। আর কাউকে সৎ বলতে চাইলে “He is an honest man” — “a” নয়, “an”, কারণ honest-এর h উচ্চারণে বসে না। এখন সেই জোড়াগুলো, যেগুলো বাংলাভাষীদের হাতে সবচেয়ে বেশি উল্টে যায়। Sensible মানে বিবেচক, বুদ্ধিমান — “She is a sensible girl” মানে মেয়েটা বুঝেশুনে কাজ করে; আর sensitive মানে সংবেদনশীল, সহজে মনে আঘাত পায়। দুটো শব্দ দেখতে প্রায় এক, অর্থ পুরো আলাদা। Funny মানে হাসায় এমন, fun মানে মজার সময় কাটে এমন — তাই “He is a funny person” ঠিক, “He is a very fun person” নয়। Person-এর বহুবচন সাধারণ কথায় people, তাই “kind persons” নয়, “kind people”। আর boring / bored-এর ভাগটা এখানেও খাটে: শিক্ষক boring হলে ক্লাস একঘেয়ে, ছাত্ররা bored হলে ছাত্রদের একঘেয়ে লাগছে। শেষে দুটো জিনিস, যেগুলো ইন্টারভিউ বা চাকরির দরখাস্তে কাজে লাগবে। এক, নিজের সম্পর্কে বলার সময় ইংরেজি সরাসরি বিশেষণের চেয়ে উদাহরণ পছন্দ করে — “I am very hardworking” বলার চেয়ে “I stayed back three evenings to finish the report” অনেক জোরালো শোনায়। দুই, নেতিবাচক কিছু বলতে হলে ইংরেজি সেটাকে নরম করে বলে: সরাসরি “He is stubborn” না বলে “He can be a bit stubborn” বা “He is quite stubborn at times”। বাংলায় স্বরভঙ্গি দিয়ে যে নরম ভাবটা আনা যায়, ইংরেজিতে সেটা আনতে হয় a bit, quite, rather, can be — এই ছোট শব্দগুলো দিয়ে। এগুলো বাদ পড়লে আপনার বলা কথা যতটা কঠোর ভেবেছিলেন, শুনতে তার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি কঠোর লাগে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • She is a sensible girl. (meaning: emotional)

    She is a sensitive girl.

    'Sensible' means having good judgement; 'sensitive' means easily affected by feelings. Learners often mix these two.

  • The teacher is very boring today. (meaning: tired of it)

    The students are bored today.

    'Boring' describes the thing/person causing the feeling; 'bored' describes the person who feels it.

  • He is very fun person.

    He is a very funny person.

    To describe someone who makes you laugh, use 'funny'. 'Fun' is usually a noun/describes an activity (a fun trip).

  • They are kind persons.

    They are kind people.

    The natural plural of 'person' is 'people'. 'Persons' sounds formal/legal and is rare in everyday English.
