Family vocabulary names people by blood, marriage or closeness: immediate family (mother, father, brother, sister), extended family (uncle, aunt, cousin, grandparents) and in-laws (mother-in-law, brother-in-law). Relationship words describe the bond itself (marriage, engagement, friendship).
পরিবারের শব্দভাণ্ডার মানুষকে রক্ত, বিয়ে বা ঘনিষ্ঠতার সূত্রে চেনায়: নিকট পরিবার (mother, father, brother, sister), বর্ধিত পরিবার (uncle, aunt, cousin, grandparents) এবং শ্বশুরবাড়ির সম্পর্ক (mother-in-law, brother-in-law)। relationship-এর শব্দ সম্পর্ক নিজেই বোঝায় (marriage, engagement, friendship)।

ইংরেজিতে আত্মীয়ের নাম বাংলার মতো এত বিস্তারিত নয়, তাই কয়েকটি শব্দ মনে রাখলেই চলে। চাচা, মামা, খালু, ফুফা — সবাইকে ইংরেজিতে 'uncle' বলা হয়; চাচি, মামি, খালা, ফুফু — সবাই 'aunt'। চাচাতো/মামাতো/খালাতো ভাই-বোন সবাই 'cousin' (ছেলে-মেয়ে আলাদা নয়)। শ্বশুরবাড়ির সম্পর্কে '-in-law' যোগ হয়: শাশুড়ি = mother-in-law, শ্বশুর = father-in-law, দেবর/ভাসুর/শালা = brother-in-law। ভাই-বোন একসাথে বোঝাতে 'siblings' বলুন। মনে রাখবেন, 'cousin brother' বা 'cousin sister' ইংরেজিতে ভুল — শুধু 'cousin' বলুন।

- only child — He is an only child, so he has no brothers or sisters.only child — একমাত্র সন্তান; সে একমাত্র সন্তান, তাই তার কোনো ভাই-বোন নেই।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
He is my cousin brother.
He is my cousin.
'Cousin' already means a relative's child of any gender. 'Cousin brother/sister' is a South-Asian habit that is wrong in standard English.
My mother's mother is my grandmother from my nanu side.
My grandmother on my mother's side (maternal grandmother).
English does not have separate words for nanu/dadu; add 'on my mother's/father's side' or use 'maternal/paternal'.
They married last year. (with 'got' missing in speech)
They got married last year.
For the event, use 'got married'. 'They are married' describes the state now; 'they got married' describes when it happened.
My parents-in-laws are kind.
My parents-in-law are kind.
Make the main noun plural, not 'law': mothers-in-law, brothers-in-law, parents-in-law.

How do I say chacha, mama, khalu and fufa in English?
English uses one word — 'uncle' — for all of them. If you must be clear, say 'my father's brother' or 'my mother's brother'. The same applies to chachi/mami/khala/fufu, which are all 'aunt'.
Is 'cousin brother' correct in English?
No. 'Cousin' already covers a male or female relative's child, so 'cousin brother' and 'cousin sister' are incorrect. Just say 'cousin', or 'my male cousin' if you really need the gender.
What is the difference between 'relatives' and 'family'?
'Family' usually means your close household (parents, siblings, spouse, children). 'Relatives' is broader and includes uncles, aunts, cousins and in-laws — everyone connected by blood or marriage.
