Introductionভূমিকা

The room where guests sit is called the drawing room in almost every Bangladeshi home, and that name is a small piece of history we kept after the British left. In current English a drawing room belongs to a large old house in a novel; the ordinary word today is living room, sitting room or lounge. Nobody will misunderstand you — but if you want your English to sound like this decade rather than 1930, living room is the word.

মেহমান বসার ঘরটাকে বাংলাদেশের প্রায় প্রতিটি বাড়িতে বলা হয় “drawing room” — ইংরেজরা চলে যাওয়ার পর আমরা যে ছোট ছোট জিনিস রেখে দিয়েছি, এটা তারই একটা। আজকের ইংরেজিতে drawing room বলতে বোঝায় উপন্যাসের বড় পুরোনো বাড়ির ঘর; চলতি শব্দ living room, sitting room বা lounge। কেউ ভুল বুঝবে না — কিন্তু আপনার ইংরেজি যদি ১৯৩০ সালের নয়, এই দশকের শোনাতে চান, তাহলে শব্দটা living room।

Living-room vocabulary is worth learning as three clusters: seating (sofa, armchair, cushion), surfaces (coffee table, shelf, rug, carpet) and things that switch on (television, remote control, lamp, fan). Most of the mistakes here are not nouns at all — they are the verbs that go with the nouns.

বসার ঘরের শব্দ তিনটে গুচ্ছে শেখা ভালো: বসার জিনিস (sofa, armchair, cushion), তলের জিনিস (coffee table, shelf, rug, carpet) আর চালু করার জিনিস (television, remote control, lamp, fan)। এখানকার বেশির ভাগ ভুল আসলে noun-এ নয় — noun-এর সাথে বসা verb-এ।

শুরু করা যাক সেই তিনটে ভুল দিয়ে, যেগুলো এই ঘরে সবচেয়ে বেশি হয়। এক, সোফার নরম চৌকো জিনিসটার নাম cushion, pillow নয় — pillow মাথার নিচে যায়, বিছানায়। বাংলায় দুটোকেই বালিশ বলে চালানো যায় বলেই এই বদলটা হয়। দুই, টিভির যন্ত্রটার নাম remote control, বা শুধু the remote — “remote controller” বলা হয় না। তিন, টিভি চালু করাকে বলে turn on the TV; বাংলার “টিভি খোলো” টেনে এনে “open the TV” বললে ইংরেজ কানে মনে হয় আপনি টিভির পিছনের ঢাকনা খুলছেন। একই কথা লাইট, ফ্যান আর এসির জন্য — turn on / turn off, switch on / switch off। আর টিভি “দেখা” নিয়ে একটা ছোট নিয়ম, যেটা মনে রাখলে অনেক কাজ দেয়। বাংলায় সবই “দেখা”, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে watch মানে চলমান কিছুকে সময় নিয়ে অনুসরণ করা, আর see মানে চোখে পড়া। তাই টিভি, খেলা, নাটক — সবই watch। “I am seeing TV” নয়, “I am watching TV”। ঘরের জিনিসপত্র বর্ণনা করার সময় জায়গার preposition গুলোও ঠিক রাখুন: on the sofa (সোফায় বসা), in the armchair (হাতলওয়ালা চেয়ারে ডুবে বসা), on the wall (দেয়ালে ঝোলানো), on the floor (মেঝেতে), under the table। কার্পেট আর রাগের তফাতটাও ছোট কিন্তু কাজের: carpet পুরো মেঝে ঢাকে, rug ছোট একটা অংশ ঢাকে। শেষে একটা কথা, যেটা এই ঘরের ইংরেজিকে সত্যিই মানুষের মতো শোনাবে। শুধু জিনিসের নাম বলার বদলে জিনিসের সাথে জীবনটা জুড়ে দিন — “We keep the fan on all evening because the room faces west”, “My father takes the single armchair and nobody argues”, “The clock on the wall is ten minutes fast, and we have stopped fixing it”। ইংরেজিতে ঘর বর্ণনা করার প্রশ্ন পরীক্ষায় আসে, কথাবার্তায়ও আসে, আর দুই জায়গাতেই তালিকার মতো বর্ণনা (“There is a sofa. There is a TV. There is a table.”) সবচেয়ে কম নম্বর পায়। There is দিয়ে শুরু করা দুটো বাক্যের পরই একটা কেন বা কীভাবে জুড়ে দিন — বর্ণনা তখনই বর্ণনা হয়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • Put a pillow on the sofa.

    Put a cushion on the sofa.

    On a sofa or chair we use 'cushions'. A 'pillow' is for the bed and your head.

  • I am seeing TV.

    I am watching TV.

    For TV, films and shows use 'watch', not 'see'. 'See' is more about noticing something with your eyes.

  • Open the TV, please.

    Turn on the TV, please.

    You 'turn on/off' a TV, lamp or fan — you do not 'open/close' them.

  • Give me the remote controller.

    Give me the remote control. / the remote.

    The device for the TV is a 'remote control' (or just 'the remote'). 'Controller' is usually for video games.
