Introductionভূমিকা

“Give me a soap.” In Bangla একটা সাবান is perfectly normal, because Bangla counts almost anything with একটা. English sorts nouns into countable and uncountable before it lets you count them, and soap, shampoo, water, toothpaste and shaving cream all sit on the uncountable side. So it is some soap, or a bar of soap — and the same rule quietly governs half the things in your bathroom.

“Give me a soap.” — বাংলায় “একটা সাবান” একদম স্বাভাবিক, কারণ বাংলা প্রায় যেকোনো কিছুকেই “একটা” দিয়ে গোনে। ইংরেজি গোনার আগে noun-কে countable আর uncountable ভাগ করে নেয়, আর soap, shampoo, water, toothpaste, shaving cream — সবগুলোই uncountable দিকে বসে। তাই বলতে হয় some soap, নয়তো a bar of soap — আর এই একই নিয়ম আপনার বাথরুমের অর্ধেক জিনিসের ওপর চুপচাপ খাটছে।

Bathroom words divide neatly by the verb that goes with them: things you wash with (soap, water, basin), things you brush with (toothbrush, toothpaste, comb), things you dry with (towel, rail) and things you turn on (tap, shower, geyser). The nouns are easy; the fixed verb in front of each is what has to be memorised.

বাথরুমের শব্দ সাজানো যায় সাথে বসা verb দিয়ে: ধোয়ার জিনিস (soap, water, basin), মাজার জিনিস (toothbrush, toothpaste, comb), মোছার জিনিস (towel, rail) আর চালু করার জিনিস (tap, shower, geyser)। Noun গুলো সহজ; মুখস্থ করতে হয় প্রত্যেকটার সামনে বসা নির্দিষ্ট verb-টা।

গোসল নিয়ে বলার সময় ইংরেজি বাক্যটা প্রায়ই ভেঙে যায়, কারণ বাংলায় “গোসল করা” একটা গোটা ক্রিয়া, আর ইংরেজিতে গোসল একটা বিশেষ্য যেটা আপনি “নেন”। তাই “I go to bath” নয় — বলুন “I'm going to take a bath” (বালতি-মগে বা টাবে) অথবা “I'm going to take a shower” (ঝরনার নিচে); ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজিতে have a bath, have a shower-ও চলে। আর “bathroom”, “washroom”, “toilet” — তিনটেরই আলাদা ভঙ্গি আছে: বাড়িতে bathroom, রেস্টুরেন্ট বা অফিসে washroom বা restroom সবচেয়ে ভদ্র, আর toilet সরাসরি হলেও ব্রিটেনে স্বাভাবিক। বাইরে গিয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করতে হলে সবচেয়ে নিরাপদ বাক্য — “Excuse me, where is the washroom?” এরপর কাজের verb গুলো, যেগুলো বাংলায় এক আর ইংরেজিতে আলাদা। বাংলায় “ধোয়া” দিয়ে হাত, মুখ, কাপড়, দাঁত — সব চলে; ইংরেজিতে দাঁতের জন্য আলাদা verb: brush your teeth, wash your teeth নয়। হাত-মুখের জন্য wash your hands, wash your face; চুলের জন্য comb your hair বা brush your hair; শরীর মোছার জন্য dry yourself; আয়নায় দেখার জন্য look in the mirror (look at নয়, কারণ প্রতিবিম্বটা আয়নার ভেতরে)। কলের বেলায় আবার সেই “খোলা”-র ফাঁদ — “open the tap” নয়, “turn on the tap”, আর বন্ধ করতে “turn off the tap”। ব্রাশ করার সময় পানি নষ্ট না করার কথাটা ইংরেজিতে ঠিক এভাবেই বলা হয়: “Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth.” আর গোনার হিসাবটা মাথায় রাখুন, কারণ পরীক্ষার খাতায় এটা বারবার আসে। Uncountable: soap, shampoo, toothpaste, water, shaving cream — এদের সামনে a বসে না, বসে some, বা মাপের শব্দ: a bar of soap, a tube of toothpaste, a bottle of shampoo, a bucket of water। Countable: towel, toothbrush, mirror, bucket, mug, comb, razor — এদের a বসে, বহুবচনে -s বসে। বাংলাদেশের বাথরুমের দুটো নিত্য জিনিস — বালতি আর মগ — ইংরেজিতে bucket আর mug, দুটোই countable, আর দুটোই দিব্যি ইংরেজি শব্দ; বিদেশিকে গোসলের ধরনটা বোঝাতে চাইলে বলতে পারেন “a bucket bath”। শেখাটা পাকা করার সহজ উপায়: এক সপ্তাহ ধরে সকালে কাজগুলো মনে মনে ইংরেজিতে বলুন — “I wash my face, brush my teeth, and take a shower” — তিন লাইনেই ঘরটার প্রায় সব শব্দ ঢুকে যায়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • I go to bath now.

    I'm going to take a bath. / go to the bathroom.

    'Bath' is the act of washing (or the tub), not a place you 'go to'. Say 'take a bath' or 'go to the bathroom'.

  • Give me a soap.

    Give me some soap. / a bar of soap.

    'Soap' is uncountable, so no 'a'. Use 'some soap' or count with 'a bar of soap'.

  • Open the tap, please.

    Turn on the tap, please.

    In English you 'turn on/off' a tap, shower or light — you do not 'open/close' them.

  • I wash my teeth every morning.

    I brush my teeth every morning.

    You 'brush' your teeth in English, not 'wash' them. 'Wash' is for hands, face and body.

What is the difference between 'bath' and 'bathroom'?

'Bathroom' is the room. 'Bath' is either the act of washing your whole body ('take a bath') or the tub itself. So you go to the bathroom, and there you take a bath or a shower.

Why can't I say 'a soap'?

'Soap' is an uncountable noun, so it takes no 'a' and no plural -s. Say 'some soap' for an unknown amount, or count it with a container word: 'a bar of soap', 'two bars of soap'.

Do we say 'open the tap' or 'turn on the tap'?

Say 'turn on the tap' (and 'turn off the tap' to stop the water). English uses 'turn on/off' for taps, showers and lights, not 'open/close'.
