Introductionভূমিকা

“Off the light before sleeping” is the most Bangladeshi sentence in English. It exists because অফ করা and অন করা are now genuine Bangla verbs — we conjugate them, লাইটটা অফ করো — and the borrowed word travels back into English still wearing its Bangla job. But in English “off” is not a verb. You turn a light off, switch it off, put it off; you cannot simply off it. Once you notice that, half the bedroom sentences you make repair themselves.

“Off the light before sleeping” — ইংরেজিতে লেখা সবচেয়ে বাঙালি বাক্য এটাই। কারণটা মজার: “অফ করা” আর “অন করা” এখন পুরোদস্তুর বাংলা ক্রিয়া, আমরা এদের রূপ বদলাই — লাইটটা অফ করো, ফ্যানটা অন করে দাও। ধার করা শব্দটা তখন বাংলা কাজের পোশাক পরেই ইংরেজিতে ফিরে যায়। কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে off কোনো verb নয়। আলো নেভাতে বলতে হয় turn off, switch off, put off — শুধু “off” দিয়ে কাজ হয় না। এটুকু চোখে পড়লেই শোবার ঘরের অর্ধেক বাক্য নিজে নিজে সোজা হয়ে যায়।

Bedroom vocabulary comes in four small families: furniture (bed, wardrobe, dressing table), bedding (pillow, blanket, bedsheet, mattress), lighting and air (lamp, switch, fan, mosquito net), and the routine verbs (go to bed, fall asleep, wake up, get up). Four families of six words each is a far easier target than one list of twenty-four.

শোবার ঘরের শব্দ চারটে ছোট পরিবারে বসে: আসবাব (bed, wardrobe, dressing table), বিছানাপত্র (pillow, blanket, bedsheet, mattress), আলো-বাতাস (lamp, switch, fan, mosquito net), আর প্রতিদিনের ক্রিয়া (go to bed, fall asleep, wake up, get up)। ছয়টা করে চার পরিবার মনে রাখা চব্বিশটার এক তালিকার চেয়ে অনেক সহজ।

প্রথমে সেই তিনটে জোড়া, যেগুলো না জানলে বাক্য বেখাপ্পা শোনায়। Pillow আর cushion: মাথার নিচে যেটা যায় সেটা pillow, সোফায় হেলান দেওয়ার নরম চৌকো জিনিসটা cushion। বাংলায় দুটোকেই “বালিশ” বলে চালিয়ে দেওয়া যায় বলেই ইংরেজিতে গুলিয়ে যায়। Blanket আর quilt: পাতলা কম্বল blanket, তুলার লেপ quilt, আর সুতির পাতলা কাঁথা quilt-ও বলা যায়। Bedsheet মানে চাদর, mattress মানে তোশক, wardrobe বা almirah মানে আলমারি। আর মশারির ইংরেজি mosquito net — এটা ইংরেজিতে আছে, কিন্তু ইউরোপ-আমেরিকার লোকের কাছে জিনিসটা অচেনা, তাই “We sleep under a mosquito net” বললে বাক্যটা পুরোপুরি শুদ্ধ, শুধু ছবিটা তাদের কাছে নতুন। এবার ক্রিয়ার হিসাব, যেখানে বাংলার ছাঁচ সবচেয়ে বেশি টানে। এক, আলো-পাখা-এসি সব কিছুতে turn on / turn off বা switch on / switch off — “off the fan” নয়, “turn off the fan”। দুই, ঘুমের ক্রিয়াগুলো আলাদা: go to bed মানে বিছানায় যাওয়া, fall asleep মানে ঘুমিয়ে পড়া, sleep মানে ঘুমিয়ে থাকা, wake up মানে ঘুম ভাঙা, get up মানে বিছানা ছাড়া। তাই “I sleep at 10 and wake up at 6” ঠিক, কিন্তু “I am sleeping now” লিখে হোয়াটসঅ্যাপে পাঠালে অর্থ দাঁড়ায় আপনি ঘুমের মধ্যে টাইপ করছেন — বলুন “I'm going to bed”। তিন, সময়ের preposition: ঘড়ির সময়ে at (at 10 pm), দিনের নামে on (on Friday), মাস বা বছরে in (in June)। বাংলার “দশটায়” শুনে ইংরেজিতে in বসিয়ে ফেলাটাই সবচেয়ে সাধারণ ভুল। শেষ কথাটা furniture নিয়ে, কারণ এটা প্রায় প্রতিটা খাতায় ধরা পড়ে। বাংলায় “আসবাবগুলো” দিব্যি বলা যায়, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে furniture uncountable — এর পিছনে কখনো -s বসে না। বলুন “a lot of furniture”, “three pieces of furniture”, “The room has new furniture”। একই দলে আছে luggage, equipment, jewellery। আর ঘরটা গুছিয়ে বর্ণনা করতে চাইলে কয়েকটা বিপরীত জোড়া হাতে রাখুন: tidy / messy, bright / dark, spacious / cramped — “My room is small but tidy” বলা “My room is small” বলার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি ইংরেজি শোনায়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

Put a cushion under my head.
Put a pillow under my head.
A 'pillow' is for the bed and your head; a 'cushion' is for a chair or sofa.
The room has many furnitures.
The room has a lot of furniture.
'Furniture' is uncountable — no plural -s. Count with 'a piece of furniture' or 'a lot of furniture'.
Off the light before sleeping.
Turn off the light before sleeping.
'Off' is not a verb here. Use 'turn off the light' (and 'turn on' to switch it on).
I sleep in 10 pm.
I go to sleep at 10 pm.
Use 'at' with clock times, and 'go to sleep'. Note 'sleep in' actually means to sleep late in the morning.
