Cost, Price, Fare, Fee and Rent: Which Money Word?
Cost, Price, Fare, Fee, Rent — কোন টাকার শব্দ কোথায়
Introductionভূমিকা
Price is what a shop asks for a thing. Cost is what you end up paying, and it works as a verb too. Fare is money for a journey, fee is money for a service or a course, and rent is money for using something somebody else owns. Bangla covers all five with দাম and ভাড়া, which is exactly why they get swapped.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Price is the amount marked on goods for sale. Cost is the amount something takes to buy, make or run, and 'cost' is also a verb. Fare is money paid to travel. Fee is money paid for a service, a course or a professional's work. Rent is money paid regularly for using a house, shop or vehicle that belongs to someone else.
Price — বিক্রির জিনিসের গায়ে লেখা দাম। Cost — কিনতে, বানাতে বা চালাতে যত টাকা লাগে; 'cost' আবার verb-ও। Fare — যাতায়াতের ভাড়া। Fee — সেবা, কোর্স বা পেশাদারের কাজের টাকা। Rent — অন্যের বাড়ি, দোকান বা গাড়ি ব্যবহারের নিয়মিত ভাড়া।
Bangla Explanation
Price বসে বিক্রির জিনিসের সাথে — 'What is the price of this shirt?', 'The price of rice has gone up'। Cost বসে মোট খরচের সাথে, এবং এটা verb হিসেবেই বেশি ব্যবহার হয় — 'How much does it cost?', 'The operation cost us forty thousand taka', 'the cost of living' (জীবনযাত্রার ব্যয়)। খেয়াল করুন cost যখন verb, তখন প্রশ্নে does লাগে: 'How much does this bag cost?' ✓, 'How much cost this bag?' Rent বসে ব্যবহারের সাথে — house rent, shop rent; verb হিসেবেও চলে: 'We rented a flat in Mirpur'। আর দুটো শব্দ পাশে রাখুন: charge মানে কোনো প্রতিষ্ঠান সেবার জন্য যে টাকা নেয় — delivery charge, service charge; verb-ও হয়: 'They charged me two hundred taka'। আর fine মানে জরিমানা, নিয়ম ভাঙার শাস্তি। শেষে একটা বানানের ফাঁদ: fare আর fair উচ্চারণে এক, কিন্তু fair মানে মেলা, ন্যায্য বা ফরসা। বাসের টিকিটে যেটা লাগে সেটা fare, r-এর আগে e নেই।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
What is your house fare?
What is your house rent?
Bangla ভাড়া covers both travelling and renting, so it is carried across as 'fare' for everything. In English, fare is only for a journey; money for living in someone else's property is rent.
The bus rent from Dhaka to Cumilla is five hundred taka.
The bus fare from Dhaka to Cumilla is five hundred taka.
The same ভাড়া problem, in the other direction. 'Bus rent' would mean you hired the whole bus.
How much cost this bag?
How much does this bag cost?
'Cost' is a main verb here, so an English question needs 'does' in front of the subject. Bangla forms the question without any extra helping word, so the auxiliary gets left out.
The doctor's price was eight hundred taka.
The doctor's fee was eight hundred taka.
Price belongs to goods on sale. What a professional charges for their service — doctor, lawyer, tutor — is a fee.
The prices of living in Dhaka are very high.
The cost of living in Dhaka is very high.
'Cost of living' is a fixed phrase and it means one total figure, not the individual price tags — so it stays singular.
Tipsটিপস
- Match the word to the situation: a journey takes fare, someone else's property takes rent, a service or course takes fee, goods on a shelf take price, and the total money going out is cost. — পরিস্থিতি ধরে মেলান: যাতায়াত — fare, অন্যের সম্পত্তি — rent, সেবা বা কোর্স — fee, দোকানের জিনিস — price, আর মোট খরচ — cost।
- Remember that 'cost' is a verb as well as a noun, and its past tense is also 'cost' — never 'costed' in everyday use. — 'Cost' noun-ও, verb-ও; আর এর past form-ও cost — সাধারণ ব্যবহারে 'costed' নয়।
- 'Fees' in the plural is normal for education: school fees, university fees. — শিক্ষার বেলায় বহুবচন স্বাভাবিক: school fees, university fees।
- 'Charge' is what a company adds for a service; a 'fine' is a punishment for breaking a rule. Do not use either for a shop price. — 'Charge' হলো প্রতিষ্ঠানের সেবার টাকা, আর 'fine' হলো নিয়ম ভাঙার জরিমানা। দোকানের দামের জায়গায় এ দুটো নয়।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is the difference between cost and price?
Price is the figure a seller asks for a particular thing, the number on the tag. Cost is the total amount you actually part with, including everything around the purchase — 'the price of the phone was 20,000 taka, but with the cover and the screen protector it cost me 22,500.' Cost is also a verb, which price is not: things cost money, and asking 'how much does it cost?' is the everyday way to ask a price.
Is it 'bus fare' or 'bus fair'?
Bus fare. The two words sound exactly alike, which is why the wrong one appears so often in writing. 'Fare' is money paid to travel; 'fair' means a mela, or just, or light in complexion — 'a book fair', 'that is not fair'. If money is changing hands for a journey, there is no i in it.
Should I say 'house rent' or just 'the rent'?
Both are understood. 'House rent' is used constantly in Bangladesh and no English speaker will misunderstand it. In British and American English people usually shorten it to 'the rent' — 'The rent is due on the fifth', 'How much is the rent?' — because the context already says what is being rented. Either is safe; 'house fare' is not.
What is the difference between a fee and a charge?
A fee is normally what you pay a professional or an institution for their work or their service — a doctor's fee, a tuition fee, an admission fee. A charge is more often what a business adds on for something extra it does for you: a delivery charge, a service charge, a late payment charge. The line between them is not sharp, but a person charges a fee, and a company adds a charge.
