English Vocabulary for Transportation
যানবাহন সম্পর্কিত ইংরেজি শব্দভাণ্ডার
Introductionভূমিকা
Bangla uses one verb to board everything — বাসে ওঠো, রিকশায় ওঠো, গাড়িতে ওঠো — so English's split between “get on” and “get in” feels arbitrary. It is not: you get ON anything you can stand up and walk inside (bus, train, plane, launch, rickshaw), and you get IN anything you have to fold yourself into (a car, a CNG, a taxi). Get that one distinction right and most of your travel sentences stop sounding translated.
বাংলায় সব বাহনেই একই ক্রিয়া — বাসে ওঠো, রিকশায় ওঠো, গাড়িতে ওঠো — তাই ইংরেজির “get on” আর “get in”-এর ভাগটা এলোমেলো মনে হয়। আসলে এলোমেলো নয়: যেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে হাঁটাচলা করা যায় তাতে get ON (bus, train, plane, launch, rickshaw), আর যেখানে গুটিসুটি হয়ে ঢুকতে হয় তাতে get IN (car, CNG, taxi)। এই একটা তফাত ঠিক হয়ে গেলে যাতায়াত নিয়ে আপনার বেশির ভাগ বাক্য আর অনুবাদের মতো শোনাবে না।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Transport vocabulary is three things at once: the vehicles (bus, train, launch, ferry, rickshaw, auto-rickshaw), the verbs of boarding and leaving (get on, get off, get in, get out of, catch, miss, board), and the money and time words (fare, ticket, book, timetable, delay). The verbs are where the mistakes live.
যাতায়াতের শব্দভান্ডার একসাথে তিনটে জিনিস: বাহনের নাম (bus, train, launch, ferry, rickshaw, auto-rickshaw), ওঠা-নামার ক্রিয়া (get on, get off, get in, get out of, catch, miss, board), আর টাকা-সময়ের শব্দ (fare, ticket, book, timetable, delay)। ভুলগুলো বাসা বাঁধে ক্রিয়াগুলোতেই।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
ওঠানামার ক্রিয়াগুলো একবারে গুছিয়ে নিন। বড় বাহনে: get on the bus / train / plane / launch, নামার সময় get off the bus। ছোট বাহনে: get in the car / taxi / CNG, নামার সময় get out of the car। সাইকেল ও মোটরসাইকেলে get on, আর চালানোটা ride। সময়মতো পৌঁছে বাহন ধরাকে বলে catch — “I caught the 7 o'clock bus” (catched নয়, caught); দেরি করে ফেললে miss — “I missed the train by two minutes”। বাহন ছেড়ে যাওয়া leave বা depart, পৌঁছানো arrive (arrive at a station, arrive in a city — কখনো “reach to” নয়, শুধু reach the station বা get to the station)। টাকার শব্দটা আলাদা করে মনে রাখুন, কারণ পরীক্ষায় আর বাস্তবে দুই জায়গাতেই কাজে লাগে: বাহনে চড়ার টাকাকে বলে fare, fee নয়, price নয় — “How much is the bus fare to Sylhet?”, “The rickshaw fare is fifty taka”। Fee লাগে সেবা বা ভর্তির টাকায় (admission fee, doctor's fee), price লাগে জিনিসের দামে। আর বাহনের সাথে by বসালে আগে a বা the বসে না: by bus, by train, by plane, by rickshaw — কিন্তু হেঁটে গেলে on foot (“by foot” নয়)। নির্দিষ্ট বাহনের কথা বললে অবশ্য article ফিরে আসে: “I took the 9 o'clock bus”, “We went in my uncle's car”। নদীপথের বড় যাত্রীবাহী নৌকাকে বলা হয় a launch বা a passenger ferry, ছোটটাকে a boat। দূরপাল্লার বাসকে বলে a coach বা an intercity bus, আর লোকাল বাসকে a local bus। ট্রেনের শ্রেণিগুলোর ইংরেজি সরাসরিই চলে: first class, sleeper, air-conditioned। টিকিট কাটার বাক্যটাও তৈরি রাখুন — “I'd like to book two tickets to Chattogram for Friday morning, please.” — এটুকু মুখস্থ থাকলে কাউন্টারে দাঁড়িয়ে ইংরেজি খুঁজতে হবে না।

Tipsটিপস
- Remember on/off for big vehicles and in/out for small ones — 'get ON a bus' but 'get IN a car'. — বড় যানবাহনে on/off আর ছোট যানবাহনে in/out মনে রাখুন — 'get ON a bus' কিন্তু 'get IN a car'।
- Pair 'catch' with 'miss' — you catch a bus if you are on time and miss it if you are late. — 'catch' ও 'miss' জোড়ায় মনে রাখুন — সময়মতো হলে bus catch করেন, দেরি হলে miss করেন।
- Say 'by bus / by train' with no 'a', but use 'on foot' when you walk. — 'by bus / by train' বলুন 'a' ছাড়া, তবে হেঁটে গেলে বলুন 'on foot'।
