Introductionভূমিকা

Ask anyone in Bangladesh how to reach a place and you will get landmarks, never street names: মসজিদের পাশে, স্কুলের ঠিক উল্টোদিকে, ব্র্যাক ব্যাংকের গলিতে ঢুকে. That instinct is exactly right in English too — “next to the mosque”, “opposite the school” — so the hard part is not the method, it is a few small words. “Turn to left” is the giveaway: Bangla says বাম দিকে, and the দিকে insists on becoming a “to” that English does not want.

Direction vocabulary is two short lists that you must be able to produce instantly: the movement words (go straight, turn left, turn right, go past, take the second left, cross the road) and the position words (next to, opposite, between, in front of, behind, near, at the corner of). Between them they cover almost every direction anyone will ever give you.

দিকনির্দেশের শব্দ আসলে দুটো ছোট তালিকা, যেগুলো মুখে সাথে সাথে আসা দরকার: চলার শব্দ (go straight, turn left, turn right, go past, take the second left, cross the road) আর অবস্থানের শব্দ (next to, opposite, between, in front of, behind, near, at the corner of)। দুটো মিলিয়ে প্রায় সব দিকনির্দেশই ঢাকা পড়ে যায়।

চারটে ভুল এখানে বারবার হয়, আর চারটেরই শিকড় বাংলায়। এক, “Turn to left” — বাংলার “বাম দিকে”-র “দিকে” অংশটা ইংরেজিতে যায় না; বলুন “Turn left”, “Turn right”, শুধু “Go straight”। তবে দিকের নাম বললে at বসে: “Turn left at the corner”, “Turn right at the traffic lights”। দুই, “in front the school” — in front of একটা তিন শব্দের গোটা preposition, of বাদ দেওয়া যায় না। তিন, beside আর besides আলাদা: beside মানে পাশে (“The bank is beside the market”), besides মানে তা ছাড়াও (“Besides English, she speaks Arabic”)। চার, প্রশ্নের গড়ন — বাংলায় “স্টেশনটা কোথায়?” বাক্যে ক্রিয়াই নেই, তাই ইংরেজিতে “Where the station is?” বেরিয়ে আসে; ইংরেজি প্রশ্নে verb-কে সামনে আনতে হয়: “Where is the station?”, “How can I get to the airport?” অবস্থানের শব্দগুলো জোড়ায় জোড়ায় শিখলে দ্রুত বসে যায়: next to / beside (পাশে), opposite / across from (উল্টোদিকে), between (দুইয়ের মাঝে), among (অনেকের মাঝে), in front of (সামনে), behind (পিছনে), near / close to (কাছে), far from (দূরে), at the end of (শেষ মাথায়), on the corner of (মোড়ে), around the corner (মোড় ঘুরলেই)। দূরত্ব বোঝানোর ছাঁচটাও মুখস্থ রাখুন, কারণ ইংরেজিতে এটা নির্দিষ্ট: “It's about ten minutes' walk from here” (walk-এর আগে minutes'-এ apostrophe লাগে), “It's a five-minute rickshaw ride”, “It's just two blocks away”। আর অচেনা কাউকে জিজ্ঞেস করার পুরো কথোপকথনটা গোটা অবস্থায় মুখস্থ করে ফেলুন — পথে দাঁড়িয়ে বাক্য বানানোর সময় থাকে না। শুরু: “Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the railway station?” বা “Excuse me, is there a pharmacy near here?” না বুঝলে: “Sorry, could you say that again more slowly?” নিশ্চিত হতে: “So I go straight and take the second left — is that right?” শেষে: “Thanks a lot.” আর নিজে যদি পথ দেখান, তাহলে ইংরেজিতে ধাপে ধাপে বলুন, একসাথে নয় — “Go straight for about two hundred metres. You'll pass a mosque on your right. Turn left just after it. The bank is opposite a school.” বাংলায় আমরা হাত দেখিয়ে অনেকটা বুঝিয়ে দিই; ইংরেজিতে হাতের বদলে ওই ছোট ক্রিয়াপদগুলোই কাজটা করে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • Turn to left at the corner.

    Turn left at the corner.

    'Turn left' and 'turn right' take no 'to' — the direction word follows 'turn' directly.

  • The shop is in front the school.

    The shop is in front of the school.

    The phrase is 'in front of'; the 'of' cannot be dropped.

  • Where the station is?

    Where is the station?

    In a direct question the verb comes before the subject: 'Where is the station?'

  • The bank is besides the market.

    The bank is beside the market.

    'Beside' means 'next to'; 'besides' means 'in addition to' — different words.
