Bangla has no word for "a". You say "আমি ডাক্তার" and the sentence is complete. So when an interviewer asks what you do, out comes "I am doctor" — one missing letter, and it is the letter every English ear notices. Job talk is where that gap shows up most, because you say these sentences more often than any other.

বাংলায় "a" বলে কোনো শব্দ নেই। "আমি ডাক্তার" বললেই বাক্য সম্পূর্ণ। তাই কেউ যখন জিজ্ঞেস করেন আপনি কী করেন, মুখ থেকে বেরিয়ে আসে "I am doctor" — একটা অক্ষর কম, আর ওই অক্ষরটাই প্রতিটি ইংরেজি কানে ধরা পড়ে। পেশার কথা বলার সময়েই এই ফাঁকটা সবচেয়ে বেশি দেখা যায়, কারণ এই বাক্যগুলোই আপনি সবচেয়ে বেশিবার বলেন।

Answering "What do you do?" needs three pieces you can mix: the role (I'm an accountant), the place (I work at a private bank), and the duty (I handle client accounts). One of them is enough for small talk; all three make an interview answer.

"What do you do?"-এর উত্তরে তিনটে টুকরো লাগে, যেগুলো মিলিয়ে-মিশিয়ে বলা যায়: পদ (I'm an accountant), জায়গা (I work at a private bank), আর কাজ (I handle client accounts)। সাধারণ আলাপে একটাই যথেষ্ট; ইন্টারভিউয়ে তিনটেই।

আগে preposition দুটো আলাদা করে নিন, কারণ এখানেই সবচেয়ে বেশি গোলমাল হয়। প্রতিষ্ঠানের নাম বললে at — "I work at BRAC", "I work at a private bank"। পদের নাম বললে as — "I work as a graphic designer"। আর কোনো বিভাগ বা ক্ষেত্রের কথা বললে in — "I work in marketing", "I work in the garments sector"। "I work in a bank" ভুল নয়, কিন্তু at বেশি স্বাভাবিক যখন নির্দিষ্ট প্রতিষ্ঠান বোঝাচ্ছেন। এরপর সেই বাংলিশ শব্দগুলো, যেগুলো আমাদের এখানে এত স্বাভাবিক যে ভুল বলে মনেই হয় না। "চাকরি করি" থেকে "I do a job" — ইংরেজিতে job করা যায় না, job থাকে বা job-এ কাজ করা হয়: "I have a job at…" বা "I work at…"। "সার্ভিস" অর্থে service — "My service is in a bank", "I am a service holder" — এই ব্যবহারটাও শুধু আমাদের অঞ্চলের; ইংরেজিতে service মানে সেবা বা পরিষেবা। আর "I am job holder" বাক্যটার কোনো ইংরেজি অস্তিত্ব নেই। সময়ের ব্যাকরণটা ইন্টারভিউয়ে সবচেয়ে বেশি নম্বর কাটে। যে কাজ শুরু হয়েছে অতীতে এবং এখনো চলছে, তার জন্য present perfect continuous: "I have been working there since 2020" বা "I have been working there for three years"। "I am working there since 2020" ভুল, কারণ present continuous শুধু এই মুহূর্তের কাজ বোঝায়। মনে রাখার নিয়ম: since-এর পরে শুরুর বিন্দু (2020, January, my graduation), for-এর পরে সময়ের দৈর্ঘ্য (three years, six months)। শেষে দুটো বাস্তব পরামর্শ। এক, "What do you do?" প্রশ্নের উত্তরে শুধু কোম্পানির নাম বলবেন না — বিদেশি কেউ আপনার কোম্পানি চেনেন না; কাজটা বলুন, তারপর প্রতিষ্ঠান। দুই, চাকরি খুঁজছেন বলতে গিয়ে "I am jobless" বা "I am unemployed" বলার দরকার নেই; স্বাভাবিক ও ইতিবাচক বাক্য হলো "I'm currently looking for a new role" — একই তথ্য, ভিন্ন সুর, আর ইন্টারভিউতে এই সুরটাই কাজে দেয়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

I am doctor.
I am a doctor.
Before a job title in English you need a/an: 'a doctor', 'an engineer'.
I do job in a bank.
I work at a bank.
'Do job' is a direct translation from Bangla. In English we say 'work at/for' a place.
I am working there since 2020.
I have been working there since 2020.
For something that started in the past and is still true, use the present perfect continuous with 'since/for'.
My service is a teacher.
My job is teaching. / I'm a teacher.
'Service' for a job is a Bangla habit; in English use 'job', 'work' or just the role.

In interviews, describe results, not just tasks: 'I improved sales by 20%' sounds stronger than 'I did sales'. — Interview-এ শুধু কাজ নয়, ফলাফল বলুন: 'I did sales'-এর চেয়ে 'I improved sales by 20%' বেশি শক্তিশালী শোনায়।
'What do you do?' is casual and friendly — it doesn't mean 'what are you doing right now?' — 'What do you do?' একটা বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ প্রশ্ন — এর মানে 'এখন কী করছ?' নয়, বরং 'তোমার পেশা কী?'
