How to Talk About Your Hobbies in English

Introductionভূমিকা

Ask a hundred students in Bangladesh about their hobbies and eighty will say gardening or stamp collecting — the two words from the memorised "My Hobby" paragraph, not from their lives. Nobody in the room owns a garden. The English is fine; the answer is dead, because it was written for an exam script and not for a person standing in front of you.

বাংলাদেশে একশো জন শিক্ষার্থীকে শখের কথা জিজ্ঞেস করলে আশিজন বলবে gardening বা stamp collecting — মুখস্থ "My Hobby" প্যারাগ্রাফের দুটো শব্দ, নিজের জীবনের নয়। ঘরের কারও বাগান নেই। ইংরেজিটা ঠিক আছে; উত্তরটাই মরা, কারণ ওটা লেখা হয়েছিল খাতার জন্য, সামনে দাঁড়ানো মানুষটার জন্য নয়।

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

A hobby answer in English has two halves: what you do, and one detail that proves you actually do it — how often, since when, with whom. The second half is what turns a fact into a conversation.

ইংরেজিতে শখের উত্তরের দুটো ভাগ: আপনি কী করেন, আর একটা তথ্য যা প্রমাণ করে সত্যিই করেন — কত ঘন ঘন, কবে থেকে, কার সাথে। দ্বিতীয় ভাগটাই তথ্যকে কথোপকথনে বদলে দেয়।

ব্যাকরণের প্রধান ফাঁদটা একটাই: hobby-র পরে verb-এর -ing রূপ বসে। "My hobby is playing football", "My hobby is reading" — "My hobby is play football" নয়, কারণ is-এর পরে আরেকটা মূল ক্রিয়া বসতে পারে না, ওখানে বসে noun, আর ক্রিয়াকে noun বানানোর উপায় হলো -ing। একই কারণে like, enjoy, love-এর পরেও -ing স্বাভাবিক: "I enjoy cooking", "I like listening to music"। "I like to read" ভুল নয়, দুটোই চলে, তবে enjoy-এর পরে কখনো to বসে না — "I enjoy to read" ভুল। দ্বিতীয় দলটা বাংলা থেকে সরাসরি অনুবাদ। "খুব পছন্দ করি" থেকে আসে "I very like it" — ইংরেজিতে very কখনো ক্রিয়ার আগে বসে না; বলুন "I really like it" বা "I like it a lot"। "সময় কাটাই" থেকে আসে "I do pass time" বা "I pass my time by singing" — স্বাভাবিক ইংরেজি "In my free time I sing" বা "I spend my free time singing"। আর "I am interesting in photography" — interesting মানে বিষয়টা আকর্ষণীয়, আর আপনি আকৃষ্ট হলে interested: "I'm interested in photography"। এখন উত্তরটাকে জীবন্ত করার কাজ। শখের নাম বলে থামবেন না, একটা নির্দিষ্ট তথ্য জুড়ুন — কত দিন ধরে, কার সাথে, কোথায়। "I play cricket every Friday morning with my cousins in the field behind our house." এই এক বাক্যে শোনার মতো তিনটে জিনিস আছে, আর সামনের মানুষটা এখান থেকেই পরের প্রশ্নটা করতে পারবেন। ইন্টারভিউ বা IELTS speaking-এও পরীক্ষক এই নির্দিষ্টতাই খোঁজেন, বড় শব্দ নয়। আর যদি সত্যিই আলাদা কোনো শখ না থাকে, বানাবেন না। ইংরেজিতে এটা বলার স্বাভাবিক উপায় আছে: "I don't really have a hobby, but I watch a lot of football" বা "Honestly, most of my time goes to my studies — when I get a break I just listen to music." সৎ উত্তর শুনতে ভালো লাগে; মুখস্থ বাগান করার গল্প লাগে না।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • My hobby is play football.

    My hobby is playing football.

    After 'my hobby is', use the -ing form: playing, not play.

  • I very like gardening.

    I really like gardening.

    In English we say 'really like', not 'very like'. 'Very' goes before adjectives, not verbs.

  • I do pass time by singing.

    I pass the time by singing.

    'Pass time' translated directly from Bangla sounds unnatural; say 'I spend my free time singing' or 'in my free time I sing'.

  • I am interesting in photography.

    I am interested in photography.

    You are 'interested'; the hobby is 'interesting'. Use the -ed form for how you feel.

  • Add a small detail after your answer ('…because it helps me relax') so the conversation keeps going. — উত্তরের সাথে একটু কারণ যোগ করুন ('…because it helps me relax'), তাহলে কথা চলতে থাকবে।
  • Use 'I'm into…' with friends, but 'I'm interested in…' in formal or work settings. — বন্ধুদের সাথে 'I'm into…' আর কাজের/আনুষ্ঠানিক জায়গায় 'I'm interested in…' বলুন।
  • Always ask the question back — 'What about you?' — so it feels like a two-way chat. — প্রশ্নটা ঘুরিয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করুন — 'What about you?' — তাহলে আলাপটা দুই দিকের মনে হবে।
