"He is my cousin brother." Every Bangladeshi says it; no English speaker has ever said it. The phrase exists because Bangla names every relative precisely and English does not, so we invent compounds to fill the gap — and each invented compound quietly marks the speaker as translating.

Talking about family in English means three things: saying how many people there are, naming the relationships with the right word, and describing what each person does. English relationship words are broad — one word often covers four Bangla words — so precision comes from adding a phrase, not a new noun.

বাংলায় আত্মীয়তার শব্দভান্ডার ইংরেজির চেয়ে অনেক বড়। চাচা, মামা, খালু, ফুফা — চারটে আলাদা সম্পর্ক, ইংরেজিতে চারটেই uncle। চাচি, মামি, খালা, ফুফু — চারটেই aunt। চাচাতো, মামাতো, খালাতো, ফুফাতো ভাই-বোন — সবাই cousin, আর cousin শব্দটা ছেলে-মেয়ে দুটোই বোঝায়, তাই "cousin brother" বা "cousin sister" বলার দরকারই নেই। কোনটা তা সত্যিই জরুরি হলে বাক্যাংশ যোগ করুন: "my father's brother", "my mother's younger sister", "a cousin on my mother's side"। ইংরেজি এখানে গরিব নয়, শুধু অন্য কৌশলে কাজটা করে। সংখ্যা বলার গঠনটাও আলাদা। বাংলায় "আমরা পরিবারে চারজন" — তাই ইংরেজিতে বেরিয়ে আসে "We are four members in my family"। ইংরেজিতে এই ধরনের সংখ্যা বলা হয় There দিয়ে: "There are four of us." অথবা "There are four people in my family." আর member শব্দটা ক্লাব বা কমিটির জন্য, পরিবারের জন্য নয়। পেশা বলার জায়গায় দুটো বাংলিশ শব্দ ধরা পড়ে সবচেয়ে দ্রুত। "চাকরিজীবী" থেকে আমরা বানিয়েছি service holder — শব্দটা ইংরেজি অভিধানে এই অর্থে নেই; বলুন "My father works at a bank" বা "My father has a government job"। আর "house wife" দুই শব্দে লেখা হয় না, আর অনেক দেশে শব্দটাকেই এখন পুরনো ধরা হয়; নিরাপদ ও স্বাভাবিক বিকল্প "My mother is a homemaker" বা "My mother takes care of the family"। একইভাবে "My brother is doing business" নয় — "My brother runs his own business"। আরও দুটো ছোট জিনিস। এক, ভাইবোনের বয়স বোঝাতে ইংরেজিতে older/younger লাগবেই, কারণ brother শব্দটা বড়-ছোট আলাদা করে না: "my older brother", "my younger sister"। বাংলাদেশে elder brother-ও শোনা যায়, ওটা ভুল নয়, তবে older বেশি প্রচলিত। দুই, একান্নবর্তী পরিবার বোঝাতে joint family বললে বিদেশি শ্রোতা বুঝবেন না; বলুন "We all live together — my parents, my uncle's family and my grandmother" — বর্ণনা করলেই ছবিটা পরিষ্কার হয়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

We are four members in my family.
There are four of us. / There are four people in my family.
'Four members' is a direct translation. Natural English is 'four of us' or 'four people in my family'.
He is my cousin brother.
He is my cousin.
'Cousin brother/sister' is South Asian English. Standard English just says 'cousin' for both.
My father is a service holder.
My father has a job. / My father works at a bank.
'Service holder' isn't used in English. Say they 'have a job' or name where they work.
My mother is house wife.
My mother is a homemaker. / My mother is a stay-at-home mum.
Use the article 'a', and the more natural word 'homemaker'. Two words 'housewife' is dated.
