The most expensive habit in Bangladeshi English is not a grammar mistake. It is the smile and the nod — you did not catch what the person said, admitting it feels like losing face, so you nod, and three minutes later you are answering a question nobody asked. Four words fix it: "Sorry, I didn't catch that."

Asking for help in English has two separate jobs: getting someone's attention, and saying exactly what you need. Bangladeshi learners usually manage the second and skip the first — which is why a perfectly correct question can still feel abrupt.

ইংরেজিতে সাহায্য চাওয়ার দুটো আলাদা কাজ: কারও মনোযোগ পাওয়া, আর ঠিক কী দরকার সেটা বলা। বাংলাদেশি শিক্ষার্থীরা সাধারণত দ্বিতীয়টা পারেন, প্রথমটা বাদ দিয়ে যান — আর সেজন্যই একেবারে নির্ভুল প্রশ্নও হঠাৎ ছুড়ে দেওয়ার মতো শোনায়।

মনোযোগ চাওয়ার শব্দটা ইংরেজিতে একটাই: "Excuse me"। বাংলায় আমরা সম্পর্ক ধরে ডাকি — "ভাই", "আপা", "মামা", "স্যার" — আর অচেনা মানুষকে ডাকার এই সহজ উপায়টা ইংরেজিতে নেই। "Brother", "Sister" বা "Uncle" বললে বিদেশি মানুষটি বিভ্রান্ত হবেন, কারণ ওই শব্দগুলো ইংরেজিতে সত্যিকারের আত্মীয় বোঝায়। তাই অচেনা কাউকে থামাতে হলে: "Excuse me, could you help me for a second?" — এই একটা বাক্যেই ডাক আর অনুরোধ দুটোই হয়ে গেল। এরপর অনুরোধের গঠন। "Help me" বাক্যটা ব্যাকরণে ঠিক, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে ওটা বিপদের ডাক — রাস্তায় কেউ "Help me!" বললে লোকে পুলিশ খোঁজে। সাধারণ সাহায্যের জন্য প্রশ্নে বদলে নিন: "Could you help me, please?" "Do you know where the nearest ATM is?" শেষ বাক্যটার গঠনটা লক্ষ করুন — "Do you know where…" দিয়ে শুরু করলে বাকি অংশটা প্রশ্নের ক্রমে যায় না, বিবৃতির ক্রমেই থাকে: "where the ATM is", "where the ATM is?" নয়। এটাকে বলে indirect question, আর ইংরেজিতে অচেনা কাউকে কিছু জিজ্ঞেস করার সবচেয়ে ভদ্র রূপ এটাই। বোঝা না গেলে কী বলবেন, সেটাই এই পাতার সবচেয়ে দরকারি অংশ। কথাটা ধরতে না পারলে: "Sorry, I didn't catch that." শব্দ না বুঝলে: "Sorry, what does 'appraisal' mean?" দ্রুত বললে: "Could you speak a little slower, please?" আবার বলতে বলা: "Could you say that again, please?" আর লিখে দিতে বলা, যা সংখ্যা বা ঠিকানার ক্ষেত্রে সবচেয়ে কাজের: "Could you write it down for me?" খেয়াল করুন কোনোটাতেই আপনি নিজেকে ছোট করছেন না — "My English is very poor, sorry" বলার দরকার নেই; বাক্যগুলো এমনিতেই ভদ্র, আর নিজের ভাষা নিয়ে ক্ষমা চাইলে শ্রোতা আপনার কথার বদলে আপনার ইংরেজির দিকে মন দেন। আর একটা ছোট বাক্য যেটা সবাই ভুলে যায় — সাহায্য পাওয়ার পর ধন্যবাদ। "Thanks so much for your help." "You've been really helpful." ইংরেজিতে এই শেষটুকু না থাকলে পুরো লেনদেনটা অসম্পূর্ণ মনে হয়, আর যিনি সাহায্য করলেন তিনি বুঝতেই পারেন না কাজটা হয়েছে কি না।

  • Help me.

    Could you help me, please?

    A bare 'Help me' sounds abrupt; 'Could you… please?' makes it polite.

  • Say again?

    Could you say that again, please?

    Use the full polite form when you need someone to repeat.

  • I can't understand you, speak slow.

    Sorry, could you speak a little slower, please?

    Soften the request with 'Sorry' and 'Could you… please?'

  • Where is ATM?

    Excuse me, do you know where the nearest ATM is?

    Open with 'Excuse me' and ask indirectly to sound polite to a stranger.
