Introductionভূমিকা

For a lot of Bangladeshis the first real English conversation of their life happens at an immigration desk in a foreign country, jet-lagged, in a queue, with an officer who has asked the same four questions two hundred times that morning. Those four questions never change. Learning them is an hour's work and it removes most of the fear.

অনেক বাংলাদেশির জীবনের প্রথম সত্যিকারের ইংরেজি কথোপকথন হয় বিদেশের ইমিগ্রেশন ডেস্কে — ঘুমহীন চোখে, লাইনে দাঁড়িয়ে, এমন একজন কর্মকর্তার সামনে যিনি ওই সকালেই একই চারটে প্রশ্ন দুশোবার করেছেন। ওই চারটে প্রশ্ন কখনো বদলায় না। এগুলো শিখতে এক ঘণ্টা লাগে, আর তাতেই ভয়ের বেশিরভাগটা চলে যায়।

Airport English falls into four stages, each with its own vocabulary: check-in and baggage, security, immigration, and arrival. You do not need many words — you need the right twenty, said clearly, at the right counter.

বিমানবন্দরের ইংরেজি চার ধাপে ভাগ, প্রতিটার নিজস্ব শব্দ আছে: চেক-ইন ও ব্যাগ, নিরাপত্তা তল্লাশি, ইমিগ্রেশন, আর পৌঁছানোর পর। অনেক শব্দ লাগে না — লাগে ঠিক কুড়িটা শব্দ, স্পষ্ট করে বলা, ঠিক কাউন্টারে।

"Window or aisle?" শেষ প্রশ্নটার উত্তর আমরা প্রায়ই ভুল বলি — "I want window side" নয়, "A window seat, please" বা "An aisle seat, please" (aisle মানে দুই সারির মাঝের পথ, উচ্চারণে s চুপ থাকে, শোনায় "আইল")। ব্যাগের ওজন বেশি হলে শুনবেন "Your bag is overweight" — তখনকার বাক্য: "How much is the excess baggage charge?" ইমিগ্রেশনের প্রশ্ন চারটে, আর প্রতিটার উত্তর এক বাক্যে হওয়া উচিত। "What is the purpose of your visit?" — "Tourism." / "I'm here on holiday." / "Business." / "I'm going to study." "How long will you stay?" — "Two weeks." "Where will you be staying?" — হোটেলের নাম বা আত্মীয়ের ঠিকানা, কাগজে লিখে হাতে রাখুন। "Do you have a return ticket?" — "Yes, here it is." প্রশ্ন না বুঝলে অনুমান করবেন না; বলুন "Sorry, could you repeat that, please?" — এটা প্রতিদিন সবাই বলে, আর এতে কোনো সন্দেহ তৈরি হয় না। যা বুঝলেন না তাতে "yes" বলাটাই একমাত্র সত্যিকারের ঝুঁকি। প্রশ্নের গঠনটা এখানে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, কারণ তাড়াহুড়োয় বাংলা ক্রম বেরিয়ে আসে — "Where check-in counter?", "My luggage where?"। ইংরেজি প্রশ্নে ক্রিয়াটা লাগবেই: "Where is the check-in counter?" "Where can I collect my baggage?" "Which gate is flight BG-201?" মনে রাখার সহজ উপায়: Where + is / can + বাকি অংশ। আর ব্যাগের শব্দ — যুক্তরাজ্যে baggage reclaim, যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে baggage claim; দুটোই একই জায়গা। কয়েকটা বাক্য কেবল বিপদের জন্য, কিন্তু সেই দিনটাতেই সবচেয়ে দরকারি। "I've missed my connecting flight — what should I do?" "My baggage hasn't arrived." (হারানো ব্যাগের কাউন্টারের নাম lost and found বা baggage services।) "I need to change my flight." "Excuse me, is this the queue for immigration?" আর ঢাকায় ফেরার পথে কাজে লাগে "Where is the transit desk?" — হযরত শাহজালাল বিমানবন্দর হোক বা দুবাই, বাক্যগুলো একই থাকে; শুধু ধীরে বলুন, আর শেষে থামুন।

    Where is the check-in counter?

    English 'where' questions need 'is': 'Where is the…?'

  • I want window side.

    Could I have a window seat, please?

    The natural phrase is 'window seat', asked with 'Could I have… please?'

  • I come for holiday.

    I'm here on holiday.

    At immigration use 'I'm here on holiday/business' — clearer and natural.

  • My luggage where?

    Where can I collect my baggage?

    Keep English word order: question word first, then 'can I…'.

  • At immigration, answer briefly and honestly: your purpose and length of stay. — ইমিগ্রেশনে সংক্ষেপে ও সত্যভাবে উত্তর দিন: উদ্দেশ্য ও কতদিন থাকবেন।
  • 'Where is…?' and 'How do I get to…?' cover most airport directions. — 'Where is…?' আর 'How do I get to…?' — বিমানবন্দরের বেশিরভাগ দিকনির্দেশ এতেই হয়।
  • Be polite but quick at counters — a simple 'please' and 'thank you' is enough. — কাউন্টারে ভদ্র কিন্তু দ্রুত থাকুন — একটা 'please' আর 'thank you'-ই যথেষ্ট।
