Introductionভূমিকা

"This food is very testy." The word is tasty, and the reason we write and say testy is that Bangla has no short vowel sitting exactly where the English one does — the ear hears কিছু একটা between টে and ট্যা and the pen picks the wrong spelling. It is a small word that appears in almost every conversation about food.

Food talk in English is built from three sets of words: taste words (sweet, salty, spicy, bitter, sour), texture words (crispy, creamy, dry, tender) and preference phrases (I'm a big fan of…, I can't stand…). Mix one from each and you sound like someone who eats, not someone who studies.

প্রথমে দুটো ব্যাকরণ। এক, like, love, hate, prefer — এগুলো অনুভূতির ক্রিয়া, এদের সাধারণত continuous রূপ হয় না। "I am liking spicy food" নয়, "I like spicy food"। (বিজ্ঞাপনে "I'm loving it" শোনা যায়, ওটা ইচ্ছাকৃত ব্যতিক্রম, নিয়ম নয়।) দুই, too আর too much আলাদা। বিশেষণের আগে শুধু too — "too spicy", "too sweet"। "Too much" বসে বিশেষ্যের আগে — "too much salt", "too much oil"। "This curry is too much spicy" তাই ভুল, ঠিকটা "too spicy" অথবা "there's too much chilli in it"। স্বাদের শব্দগুলো গুছিয়ে নিন, কারণ বাংলার একটা শব্দের জন্য ইংরেজিতে প্রায়ই দুটো আলাদা শব্দ থাকে। ঝাল = spicy বা hot; কিন্তু hot আবার গরম বোঝায়, তাই দ্ব্যর্থতা এড়াতে spicy বলুন। টক = sour, আর লেবু-জাতীয় হলে tangy বা citrusy। তেতো = bitter (করলা = bitter gourd)। ঝাঁঝালো = pungent বা sharp। কষা বা মসলাদার = rich, flavourful। আর তেলে ভাসছে বোঝাতে greasy বা oily — এটা নেতিবাচক শব্দ, তাই কারও রান্নার সামনে বলবেন না। পছন্দ-অপছন্দ বলার ভদ্র উপায়টাই ইংরেজিতে বেশি জরুরি। ভালো লাগলে: "This is delicious.", "The biryani tastes amazing.", "I'm a big fan of street food." ভালো না লাগলে সরাসরি "I don't like it" বললে রান্না করা মানুষটি আহত হন; ইংরেজিতে নরম করার প্রচলিত বাক্য আছে — "It's a bit too sweet for me.", "It's not really my thing.", "I've never been a fan of bitter gourd." খেয়াল করুন প্রতিটাতেই "for me" বা "my" আছে — দোষটা খাবারের নয়, আপনার রুচির, আর এই ঘুরিয়ে বলাটাই ইংরেজি সৌজন্যের কেন্দ্রে। শেষে আমাদের নিজের খাবারের কথা বলার প্রস্তুতি নিয়ে রাখুন, কারণ বিদেশে এই প্রশ্নটা আসবেই। খিচুড়ি, পান্তা, শুঁটকি, পিঠা — এগুলোর ইংরেজি অনুবাদ নেই, আর খোঁজারও দরকার নেই। নামটা বলুন, তারপর এক লাইনে বুঝিয়ে দিন: "Khichuri is rice and lentils cooked together — we usually eat it when it rains." Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

This food is very testy.
This food is very tasty.
The word is 'tasty' (delicious). 'Testy' means bad-tempered — a common spelling slip.
I am liking spicy food.
I like spicy food.
For general likes and dislikes, use the present simple ('I like'), not the continuous.
This curry is too much spicy.
This curry is too spicy.
Use 'too + adjective'. 'Too much' goes before a noun (too much salt), not an adjective.
Give me one tea.
Could I have a cup of tea, please?
'Give me' sounds like an order. Use 'Could I have…?' and count tea as 'a cup of tea'.

To sound polite when ordering, use 'Could I have…?' or 'I'll have…' rather than 'Give me…'. — অর্ডার করার সময় ভদ্র শোনাতে 'Give me…'-এর বদলে 'Could I have…?' বা 'I'll have…' ব্যবহার করুন।
To soften a dislike, say 'It's not really my thing' instead of a blunt 'I hate it'. — অপছন্দ নরমভাবে বলতে সরাসরি 'I hate it'-এর বদলে 'It's not really my thing' বলুন।
