Say "parcel please" anywhere outside South Asia and the person behind the counter will look for a courier. Every restaurant in Dhaka understands it, no restaurant in London does — and that gap is the whole reason this page exists.

Ordering runs in a fixed order: get attention, name what you want with "I'll have" or "Could I get", say any change with "without" or "extra", then close it with "That's all, thanks." Four steps, and the same four whether it is a counter, a table or a phone.
অর্ডার করার ধাপগুলো বাঁধা: আগে মনোযোগ পাওয়া, তারপর "I'll have" বা "Could I get" দিয়ে জিনিসটার নাম বলা, তারপর "without" বা "extra" দিয়ে বদলটা বলা, শেষে "That's all, thanks." — চারটা ধাপ, আর কাউন্টার, টেবিল বা ফোন, সব জায়গায় এই চারটাই।

প্রথম ধাপেই আমরা আটকে যাই, কারণ বাংলাদেশে ওয়েটারকে ডাকার একটা শব্দ আছে — "মামা" বা "ভাই"। ইংরেজিতে ওই ডাকটা নেই। "Waiter!" বলে ডাকা এখন প্রায় অভদ্র ধরা হয়, আর "brother" বা "uncle" বললে মানুষটা অবাক হবেন। যা করতে হয়: চোখাচোখি করুন, হাতটা সামান্য তুলুন, আর বলুন "Excuse me" — এটুকুই যথেষ্ট, আর এটাই বিদেশে সব জায়গায় চলে। অর্ডার দেওয়ার বাক্যটা দুটো — "I'll have the chicken biryani, please" আর "Could I get a large coffee, please"। এই দুটোর বাইরে যেতে হয় না। কিন্তু আমরা প্রায়ই বলি "I want one burger" বা "Give me one coffee" — ব্যাকরণে ভুল নেই, তবু শুনতে রূঢ়, কারণ বাংলায় "একটা বার্গার দিন"-এর ভদ্রতা ক্রিয়ার রূপে থাকে আর ইংরেজিতে সেই রূপ নেই। খেয়াল করুন সংখ্যাটাও: ইংরেজিতে "one burger" বলার দরকার নেই যদি একটাই চান — "a burger" যথেষ্ট; one বললে মনে হয় আপনি সংখ্যাটার উপর জোর দিচ্ছেন। বদল চাওয়ার শব্দ দুটো: without আর extra। "Could I get it without onions?" "Can I have extra cheese?" ঝাল নিয়ে বাংলাদেশিদের যে প্রশ্নটা সবচেয়ে বেশি লাগে: "Is it very spicy?" আর "Could you make it less spicy?" — বিদেশে ঝালের মাত্রা আমাদের হিসাবের সাথে মেলে না, তাই জিজ্ঞেস করে নেওয়াই ভালো। আর "half plate" বা "full plate" আমাদের রেস্টুরেন্টের ভাষা; ইংরেজিতে বলুন "a half portion" বা শুধু "a small one"। খাবার সাথে নেওয়ার শব্দ দেশভেদে আলাদা: যুক্তরাজ্যে "takeaway", যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে "to go" — "Can I get that to go, please?" parcel শব্দটা এই অর্থে শুধু আমাদের এখানেই চলে। খাওয়া শেষে বিল চাইতে বলুন "Could we get the bill, please?" (আমেরিকায় "the check")। আর অনলাইনে বা ফোনে অর্ডার করলে যে দুটো তথ্য সবসময় চাওয়া হয়: "for delivery or collection?" আর আপনার ঠিকানা — ঠিকানাটা ধীরে বলুন এবং বাড়ির নম্বর ও রোড নম্বর আলাদা করে বলুন, কারণ আমাদের ঠিকানার গঠন ইংরেজি কানে দ্রুত ধরা পড়ে না।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
I want to eat one burger.
I'll have a burger, please.
'I'll have…' is the natural ordering phrase; 'I want to eat…' sounds translated.
Make it no onion.
Could I get it without onions?
Use 'without' in a polite request instead of a blunt command.
Parcel please.
Can I get it to go, please?
'Parcel' isn't used for takeaway in English; say 'to go' or 'takeaway'.
Give one coffee big.
A large coffee, please.
Put the size before the item and add 'please': 'A large coffee, please.'
