The sentence a Bangladeshi actually needs in a restaurant abroad is never in the textbook: "Does this have any pork in it?" Menus in English rarely spell it out, staff will not guess your reason, and "Is it halal?" often gets a blank look from someone who has never heard the word. Ask about the ingredient, not the category.

A restaurant visit runs through five fixed moments: getting a table, reading the menu, ordering, dealing with a problem, and paying. Each one has two or three sentences, and they are the same sentences in every English-speaking country.

"Is the chicken halal?" — শেষেরটা মুসলিম-অধ্যুষিত এলাকার রেস্টুরেন্টে কাজ করে, কিন্তু সাধারণ পশ্চিমা রেস্টুরেন্টে উপকরণের নাম ধরে জিজ্ঞেস করাই নিরাপদ। নিরামিষ চাইলে "Do you have any vegetarian dishes?" আর ঝাল নিয়ে "Is this dish very spicy?" — মনে রাখবেন, বিদেশে spicy বলতে যা বোঝায় তা আমাদের হিসাবের ঝাল নয়; ওখানে mild মানেও আমাদের কাছে প্রায় ঝালহীন। টেবিল থেকে অর্ডার পর্যন্ত বাক্যগুলো ছোট। ঢোকার সময়: "A table for two, please." ভিড় থাকলে "Do you have a table available?" বা "How long is the wait?" মেনু: "Could we see the menu, please?" অর্ডার: "I'll have the chicken biryani, please." — "Give me menu" বা "I want one biryani" ব্যাকরণে ভুল নয়, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে ভদ্রতা বসে বাক্যের গঠনে, শব্দের সুরে নয়। বাংলায় "একটা মেনু দিন" যথেষ্ট ভদ্র, কারণ "দিন" ক্রিয়াটাই সম্মানসূচক; ইংরেজি ক্রিয়ার সেই রূপ নেই, তাই প্রশ্নে বদলে নিতে হয়। সমস্যা হলে অভিযোগ করার আলাদা সুর আছে। ইংরেজিতে অভিযোগ শুরু হয় নরম করে: "Excuse me, I think there's been a mistake with our order." "The soup is a bit cold — could you warm it up, please?" সরাসরি "This is wrong" বা "You gave wrong food" বললে কর্মীটি রক্ষণাত্মক হয়ে যান, আর কাজটা ধীর হয়। নরম শুরু মানে দুর্বলতা নয়, ওটাই দ্রুত সমাধানের পথ। বিল আর বকশিশে কয়েকটা তথ্য জেনে যান। বিল চাইতে "Could we get the bill, please?" — আমেরিকায় বলবেন "the check"। বাংলাদেশে অনেক রেস্টুরেন্টে বিলের সাথে service charge যোগ থাকে, আর বকশিশ বাধ্যতামূলক নয়। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে উল্টো — ওখানে বকশিশ প্রায় বাধ্যতামূলক, সাধারণত বিলের ১৫ থেকে ২০ শতাংশ, আর না দিলে সেটা অভদ্রতা ধরা হয়। যুক্তরাজ্যে অনেক জায়গায় service charge বিলেই যোগ করা থাকে, তখন আলাদা বকশিশ লাগে না — বিলটা একবার দেখে নিন, তাতে লেখা থাকে।

A command sounds rude in a restaurant; add 'Could we… please?'

English speakers order with 'I'll have…', not 'I want…'.
