How to Express Thanks in English

Introductionভূমিকা

Try saying "ধন্যবাদ" to your own mother after she serves you rice and watch her face. In Bangla, thanking the people closest to you can sound cold — the distance is built into the word. English works the opposite way: thanks are said constantly, to family, to a shopkeeper, to a bus driver, and leaving them out is what gets noticed.

Thanks in English is a two-part exchange, not a single word: someone thanks, and the other person answers. Leaving the answer out — silence, or just a nod — reads as coldness in English even when none is meant.

(ব্রিটিশ কথ্য), "Thanks a lot."। মাঝারি: "Thank you so much.", "I really appreciate it.", "That's very kind of you."। ভারী বা আনুষ্ঠানিক: "I'm very grateful for your help.", "I can't thank you enough."। খেয়াল করুন, বাংলাদেশে চিঠি বা ইমেইলে আমরা লিখি "I am thankful to you" — বাক্যটা ব্যাকরণে চলে, কিন্তু স্বাভাবিক ইংরেজিতে grateful শব্দটাই ব্যবহৃত হয়: "I'm really grateful to you for this." উত্তরটাই সবচেয়ে বেশি বাদ পড়ে, অথচ ইংরেজিতে ওটা ছাড়া লেনদেন অসম্পূর্ণ। কেউ "Thank you" বললে বলুন "You're welcome.", "No problem.", "Happy to help.", "Anytime.", "Don't mention it." — যেকোনো একটা। বাংলাদেশে খুব প্রচলিত "Most welcome" — এটা দক্ষিণ এশীয় ইংরেজি; স্বাভাবিক ইংরেজিতে হয় "You're most welcome" (পুরো বাক্য) অথবা শুধু "You're welcome"। দুটো ছোট ভুল বারবার ফেরে। এক, preposition-এর পরে -ing: "Thanks for helping me", "Thanks for coming" — "Thanks for help me" নয়, কারণ for-এর পরে ক্রিয়ার -ing রূপই বসে। দুই, "Thanks God" — শব্দটা "Thank God", কারণ এখানে thank ক্রিয়া, বিশেষ্য নয়; পুরো কথাটা "(I) thank God"। একইভাবে "Thanks Allah" নয়, "Alhamdulillah" বা "Thank God"। আর একটা ব্যবহারিক কথা, বিশেষ করে যাঁরা বিদেশে যাবেন। ইংরেজিভাষী দেশে ধন্যবাদের হার আমাদের চেয়ে অনেক বেশি: দোকানে টাকা দেওয়ার সময়, বাস থেকে নামার সময়, কেউ দরজা ধরে রাখলে, লিফটে জায়গা করে দিলে — প্রতিবার। আমরা এগুলোতে চুপ থাকি, কারণ আমাদের সংস্কৃতিতে এই ছোট কাজগুলোতে ধন্যবাদ লাগে না। ওখানে না বললে মানুষ ভাবেন আপনি অভদ্র বা অহংকারী, যা আপনি নন। তাই অভ্যাসটা আগে থেকেই তৈরি করুন — "Thanks" শব্দটা ছোট, কিন্তু ওটাই সবচেয়ে বেশিবার লাগবে।

  • Thanks for help me.

    Thanks for helping me.

    After 'Thanks for' the verb takes -ing: 'for helping me', not 'for help me'.

  • Thanks God, I passed.

    Thank God, I passed.

    The fixed expression is 'Thank God' (no -s), not 'Thanks God'.

  • — 'Thank you.' — (silence)

    — 'Thank you.' — 'You're welcome.'

    In English you should reply to thanks — 'You're welcome' or 'No problem' — not stay silent.

  • I am very thankful to you for this.

    I'm really grateful to you for this.

    'Thankful' is stiff in speech; 'grateful' or 'I really appreciate it' sounds more natural.
