Introductionভূমিকা

Two people bump shoulders at a bus door in Dhaka and both say "sorry" — which is fine. But English splits that moment in two. Before you push past someone, it is "Excuse me". After you have already stepped on their foot, it is "Sorry". Using the wrong one is not rude exactly; it just lands half a second out of place, every time.

An apology in English has up to three parts: the word (sorry, I apologize), what it is for (for being late), and what you will do about it (it won't happen again). The first is compulsory, the second is usual, and the third is what makes an apology count at work.

Sorry for being late.
After 'for' the verb takes -ing: 'for being late', not 'for be late'.
I am sorry to you.
I'm sorry for that. / I apologize to you.
We say 'sorry for' something, or 'apologize to' a person — not 'sorry to you'.
Excuse me, I broke your cup.
I'm so sorry, I broke your cup.
Use 'Sorry' when you did something wrong; 'Excuse me' is for getting attention or passing by.
I apologize about the mistake.
I apologize for the mistake.
The correct preposition after 'apologize' is 'for', not 'about'.
