When you miss what someone said, the safest sentence in English is 'Sorry, could you say that again?' It works with a stranger, a boss, a doctor or a call-centre agent, and asking is never the embarrassing part — nodding at something you did not understand is.

These are repair phrases — short sentences that stop a conversation for a second so it can go on correctly. You use one when you did not hear the words, or heard them but did not follow the meaning.

I can't hear you.
Bangla 'শুনতে পাচ্ছি না' covers both English verbs. Hear is what your ears do; listen is paying attention — and listen needs 'to' before its object (listen to me), so 'listen you' is impossible.
Please repeat it again.
Could you repeat that, please?
'Repeat' already means 'say it again', so 'repeat again' says the same thing twice.
Please tell slowly.
Could you speak a bit more slowly, please?
This is 'আস্তে বলেন' translated word for word. Tell needs a person after it (tell me), and for the manner of speaking English uses speak, not tell.

Grammatically fine, but a bare 'What?' sounds sharp in English — the way a shouted 'কী?' would in Bangla. 'Sorry?' does the same job politely.

A two-word command taken straight from 'আবার বলেন'. English softens an instruction into a question when you are asking a favour of someone.

- Say what you missed, not just that you missed something: 'Sorry, the last part?' gets a shorter, clearer answer. — কোন অংশটা ধরতে পারেননি সেটা বলুন: 'Sorry, the last part?' বললে উত্তরও ছোট আর পরিষ্কার আসে।
- Repeat numbers and names back: 'So that's 01712, three-four-five?' It catches mistakes before they cost you. — নম্বর আর নাম ফিরে বলুন: 'So that's 01712, three-four-five?' — ভুল থাকলে তখনই ধরা পড়ে।
- Two 'sorry's are enough. If you still cannot follow, ask them to write it down or send a message. — দুবার 'sorry' যথেষ্ট। তারপরও না বুঝলে লিখে দিতে বা মেসেজ করতে বলুন।
- On the phone, blame the line — 'the line isn't very clear' — so nobody feels blamed. — ফোনে দোষটা লাইনের ওপর দিন — 'the line isn't very clear' — তাহলে কেউ অস্বস্তিতে পড়ে না।
