"আপনি কে?" is a perfectly ordinary thing to say when an unknown number calls. Translate it and you get "Who are you?" — which in English sounds like a challenge, almost an accusation. On a call there is no face and no context, so every word carries more weight than it would across a desk.

অচেনা নম্বর থেকে ফোন এলে "আপনি কে?" বলা একেবারেই স্বাভাবিক। অনুবাদ করলে দাঁড়ায় "Who are you?" — আর ইংরেজিতে ওটা শুনতে চ্যালেঞ্জের মতো, প্রায় অভিযোগের মতো। ফোনে মুখ দেখা যায় না, প্রসঙ্গও থাকে না, তাই প্রতিটা শব্দের ওজন টেবিলের ওপারে বসে বলার চেয়ে বেশি।

A phone call in English follows a fixed order: identify yourself, ask for the person you want, state your business, close properly. Skip any of the four and the call feels off, no matter how good the grammar in between is.

Can I call you back in a minute?" আর কল কেটে গেলে ফিরে এসে বলুন "Sorry, we got cut off." — খেয়াল করুন, ইংরেজিতে কলটা কাটে, আপনি কাটেন না; "I cut the phone" বললে মানে দাঁড়ায় আপনি ইচ্ছা করে কেটে দিয়েছেন। দুটো শেষ কথা। এক, ভুল নম্বরে ফোন গেলে বা এলে ভদ্র বাক্যটা হলো "Sorry, I think you have the wrong number." — অন্যজনকে দোষ না দিয়ে বলার এই "I think"-টুকুই ইংরেজি সৌজন্য। দুই, ফোন শেষ করার আগে একটা ছোট ক্রম আছে, আর বাংলাদেশে আমরা প্রায়ই ওটা বাদ দিয়ে সরাসরি কেটে দিই: "Okay, thanks for your time." → "I'll send you the details." → "Bye." — তিনটে ধাপ, দশ সেকেন্ড, আর এটুকু না থাকলে অন্য প্রান্তের মানুষটির মনে হয় লাইনটা কেটে গেছে।

On the phone we identify ourselves with 'This is … speaking', not 'I am …'.

'Who are you?' sounds rude on a call; the natural, polite phrase is 'Who's calling, please?'.

'Wait, wait' is abrupt; 'Hold on a moment, please' is the polite way to pause a call.

The natural phrase is 'you have the wrong number', softened with 'I think' to stay polite.
