Phone calls feel harder than face-to-face talk because you can't see the other person. A set of fixed phrases takes away the fear — you use almost the same lines every time.

Phone English is a small set of fixed phrases for starting a call, saying who you are, asking for someone, holding, taking a message and ending politely.

ফোনে নিজের পরিচয় দিতে 'This is … speaking' বলুন — 'I am …' নয়। কে ফোন করেছে জানতে ভদ্রভাবে বলুন 'Who's calling, please?' ('Who are you?' রূঢ় শোনায়)। কাউকে চাইতে 'May I speak to …, please?' একটু ধরতে বলতে 'Hold on a moment, please.' লাইন খারাপ হলে 'Sorry, you're breaking up — could you say that again?' আর শেষে 'Thanks for calling. Bye!' — ফোনে 'please' আর 'could you' বেশি ব্যবহার করলে কথা ভদ্র থাকে।

On the phone we identify ourselves with 'This is … speaking', not 'I am …'.

Who's calling, please?
'Who are you?' sounds rude on a call; the natural, polite phrase is 'Who's calling, please?'.
Wait, wait.
Hold on a moment, please.
'Wait, wait' is abrupt; 'Hold on a moment, please' is the polite way to pause a call.
You did wrong number.
I think you have the wrong number.
The natural phrase is 'you have the wrong number', softened with 'I think' to stay polite.

- Say your name at the start — 'This is … speaking' — so the caller knows who they reached. — শুরুতেই নিজের নাম বলুন — 'This is … speaking' — যাতে কল করা মানুষ বোঝে কার সাথে কথা হচ্ছে।
- 'Could you…?' and 'please' keep a phone call polite, even with a stranger. — 'Could you…?' আর 'please' ব্যবহার করলে অচেনা মানুষের সাথেও ফোনে কথা ভদ্র থাকে।
