On the phone you can't use gestures or facial expressions, so the right words matter even more. A small set of standard phrases helps you answer calls, take messages and hang up politely in English.
ফোনে হাতের ইশারা বা মুখের ভাব ব্যবহার করা যায় না, তাই সঠিক শব্দগুলো আরও বেশি জরুরি। কয়েকটি নির্দিষ্ট বাক্য জানলেই আপনি ইংরেজিতে কল ধরা, মেসেজ নেওয়া আর ভদ্রভাবে ফোন রাখা সহজে করতে পারবেন।

Phone English is a set of fixed, polite phrases for each stage of a call: greeting, identifying yourself, connecting people, taking a message and saying goodbye.
ফোন ইংলিশ হলো কলের প্রতিটি ধাপের জন্য কিছু নির্দিষ্ট, ভদ্র বাক্য: শুরুতে অভিবাদন, নিজের পরিচয় দেওয়া, লাইনে সংযোগ করা, মেসেজ নেওয়া এবং শেষে বিদায় জানানো।

ফোন ধরলে সাধারণত “Hello” বা কাজের ক্ষেত্রে নিজের নাম বলে ধরা হয়: “Hello, this is Rahim speaking.” মনে রাখবেন — ফোনে নিজের পরিচয় দিতে “I am Rahim” নয়, বরং “This is Rahim” বলাই স্বাভাবিক। কে ফোন করেছে জানতে ভদ্রভাবে বলুন “May I ask who's calling?”। কাউকে লাইনে ধরে রাখতে “Hold on a moment, please”। শব্দ ভালো শোনা না গেলে “Sorry, could you repeat that?” বা “The line is breaking up”। মেসেজ রাখতে “Can I leave a message?” আর ফোন রাখার আগে “Thanks for calling. Bye!” বলা যায়। আস্তে ও স্পষ্ট করে বলুন, কারণ ফোনে উচ্চারণ বোঝা একটু কঠিন।

Hello, this is Rahim.
On the phone we identify ourselves with 'this is', not 'I am'.
Who are you?
May I ask who's calling?
'Who are you?' sounds rude on a call; 'who's calling?' is the polite standard.
Please wait, I am cutting the phone.
Please hold on. I'll hang up now.
'Cut the phone' is a direct translation; the natural verb is 'hang up' (end the call).
He is not in the number.
He's not available right now.
Say the person is 'not available' or 'not in' — not 'in the number'.

- Say your name with 'This is …' when you call someone at work, so they know who they're speaking to. — কাজের জন্য কাউকে কল করলে 'This is …' দিয়ে নিজের নাম বলুন, যাতে কে কথা বলছে বোঝা যায়।
- If you didn't hear clearly, it's normal to ask 'Sorry, could you repeat that?' — don't just guess. — স্পষ্ট না শুনলে 'Sorry, could you repeat that?' বলা স্বাভাবিক — অনুমান করে উত্তর দেবেন না।
- For work calls, stay formal ('I'm afraid…', 'Could I…'); with friends, casual ('Hey, what's up?') is fine. — কাজের কলে আনুষ্ঠানিক থাকুন ('I'm afraid…', 'Could I…'); বন্ধুদের সাথে ঘরোয়া ('Hey, what's up?') ঠিক আছে।

How do I answer the phone politely in English?
Say 'Hello' and, for work calls, add your name: 'Hello, this is Rahim speaking.' Then ask 'How can I help you?' if it's a business call.
