Introductionভূমিকা

Ask anyone in Dhaka where a place is and the answer comes back in landmarks: past the mosque, beside the Shishu Park, the building with the yellow gate. Ask the same question in Manchester or Melbourne and the answer comes back in street names and numbers. Same question, different map in the head — and that is why the reply so often makes no sense.

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

Asking for directions is two sentences: one to stop the person, one to ask. The second sentence has a polite form that English speakers use with strangers almost every time — the indirect question — and it is the piece most learners never pick up.

রাস্তা জিজ্ঞেস করা মানে দুটো বাক্য: একটা মানুষটিকে থামানোর জন্য, একটা জিজ্ঞেস করার জন্য। দ্বিতীয় বাক্যটার একটা ভদ্র রূপ আছে যেটা ইংরেজিভাষীরা অচেনা মানুষের সাথে প্রায় সবসময়ই ব্যবহার করেন — indirect question — আর এই অংশটাই বেশিরভাগ শিক্ষার্থী কখনো শেখেন না।

শুরুটা সবসময় "Excuse me" দিয়ে। তারপর প্রশ্ন, আর প্রশ্নে ক্রিয়াটা সামনে আনতেই হবে — বাংলার ক্রম ধরে রাখলে "Excuse me, station is where?" বেরিয়ে আসে, যেটা ইংরেজিতে প্রশ্নই নয়। সোজা রূপ: "Where is the station?" "How do I get to the train station?" আর ভদ্র, অচেনা মানুষের জন্য উপযুক্ত রূপ: "Could you tell me where the station is?" খেয়াল করুন শেষের গঠনটা — "Could you tell me" দিয়ে শুরু করলে পরের অংশটা আর প্রশ্নের ক্রমে যায় না, বিবৃতির ক্রমেই থাকে: "where the station is", "where is the station" নয়। এটাই indirect question, আর রাস্তায় অচেনা কাউকে থামালে এটাই সবচেয়ে নিরাপদ। দূরত্ব জিজ্ঞেস করতে গিয়ে "How much far is it?" বেরিয়ে আসে, কারণ বাংলায় "কত দূর" — আর "কত" শুনলেই মাথায় "how much" আসে। ইংরেজিতে দূরত্বের প্রশ্ন "How far is it?"। সময়ের প্রশ্ন আলাদা: "How long does it take to walk there?" আর হারিয়ে গেলে: "Sorry, I think I'm lost." — "I am lost my way" নয়; হয় "I'm lost", নয়তো "I've lost my way"। উত্তরটা বোঝাই আসল কাজ, কারণ ওখানে শব্দগুলো দ্রুত আসে। যে কয়েকটা শব্দের জন্য কান পেতে থাকবেন: straight (সোজা), turn left / right, take the second turn, at the corner, at the traffic lights, at the junction, at the roundabout, opposite (উল্টো দিকে), next to (পাশে), past the bank (ব্যাংক পেরিয়ে), on your left। "Opposite" আর "in front of" গুলিয়ে ফেলবেন না — opposite মানে রাস্তার উল্টো পাশে, in front of মানে সামনে দাঁড়ানো। আর শেষে দুটো অভ্যাস, যেগুলো ইংরেজির চেয়ে বেশি কাজে দেয়। এক, উত্তরটা শুনে নিজের ভাষায় ফিরিয়ে বলুন: "So, straight to the traffic lights, then left, and it's on my right?" — ভুল বুঝে থাকলে ওখানেই ধরা পড়বে। দুই, "Is it walking distance?" জিজ্ঞেস করে নিন; বাংলাদেশে দশ মিনিটের পথ রিকশায় যাওয়া স্বাভাবিক, ইংরেজিভাষী শহরে ওই একই দূরত্বে মানুষ হেঁটে যান আর সেটাই বলে দেন — তাই "It's just down the road" শুনে ট্যাক্সি খুঁজতে যাবেন না।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

Excuse me, where is the station?
In English the question word (where) goes first — not at the end as in the Bangla word order.
How much far is the bank?
How far is the bank?
Distance uses 'How far', not 'how much far'. 'How much' is for price or amount.
Please tell me the way of the airport.
Please tell me the way to the airport.
We say 'the way to' a place, not 'the way of'.
I am lost my way.
I've lost my way. / I'm lost.
Either use the verb ('I've lost my way') or the adjective ('I'm lost') — not both together.

Always open with 'Excuse me' before your question — it is the polite way to get a stranger's attention. — প্রশ্নের আগে সবসময় 'Excuse me' বলুন — অচেনা কারও মনোযোগ নেওয়ার ভদ্র উপায় এটাই।
With strangers, 'Could you tell me…?' sounds softer and more polite than 'Can you…?' or a bare question. — অচেনা মানুষের সাথে 'Could you tell me…?' সরাসরি প্রশ্নের চেয়ে নরম ও বেশি ভদ্র শোনায়।
If you don't understand the answer, repeat it back: 'So, straight and then left?' and finish with 'Thank you.' — উত্তর না বুঝলে আবার বলে নিশ্চিত হোন: 'So, straight and then left?' — এবং শেষে 'Thank you' বলুন।
