Introductionভূমিকা

Two things trip up a Bangladeshi at a market in English, and neither is grammar. One is that "কম রাখেন" comes out as "Give discount", which sounds like an instruction to an employee. The other is that "এক পোয়া" has no English word at all — you have to switch to grams on the spot.

Market English covers three jobs: asking a price by weight or by piece, saying the price is too high without insulting anyone, and naming the quantity you actually want. Everything else — freshness, change, a bag — is one short sentence each.

বাজারের ইংরেজিতে কাজ তিনটে: ওজন বা পিস হিসেবে দাম জিজ্ঞেস করা, কাউকে অপমান না করে দামটা বেশি বলা, আর ঠিক কতটুকু চান সেটা বলা। বাকি সব — টাটকা কি না, ভাংতি, ব্যাগ — প্রতিটার জন্য একটা করে ছোট বাক্য।

দাম জিজ্ঞেস করার সময় হিসাবের এককটাই আসল কথা। "How much?" প্রশ্নটা অসম্পূর্ণ, কারণ বিক্রেতা জানেন না আপনি পুরো ঝুড়ির দাম চাইছেন না কেজির দাম। বলুন "How much is it per kilo?", "How much for one?", "How much for the whole lot?"। আর আমাদের পোয়া, সের, হালি — এগুলোর ইংরেজি প্রতিশব্দ নেই। পোয়ার বদলে গ্রাম বলুন: "Half a kilo, please", "250 grams, please"। ডিম বা কলার হালি হলে সংখ্যাতেই বলুন: "Four eggs" বা "A dozen bananas" — বারো হলে dozen, চার হলে শুধু four। দরদাম ইংরেজিতে হয়, কিন্তু অন্য সুরে। বাংলায় আমরা সরাসরি বলি — "এত দাম কেন? কমান।" ইংরেজিতে সেই সরাসরিত্ব ঝগড়ার মতো শোনায়, তাই বাক্যটা নরম করার শব্দ বসাতে হয়: a bit, a little, could। "That's a bit too expensive." "Could you make it a little cheaper?" "Can you do three hundred?" শেষ বাক্যটাই সবচেয়ে কাজের — নিজের দামটা সরাসরি বলা, দোষ না দিয়ে। আর "This is very costly" বাক্যটা ব্যাকরণে ঠিক হলেও কথ্য ইংরেজিতে costly প্রায় ব্যবহারই হয় না; expensive বলুন। মাছ-সবজির বাজারে যে প্রশ্নগুলো আমরা সবসময় করি, সেগুলোরও নির্দিষ্ট ইংরেজি আছে। টাটকা কি না: "Are these fresh?" — মাছের ক্ষেত্রে আরও নির্দিষ্ট করে "Is this today's catch?"। কেটে দিতে বলা: "Could you clean and cut it, please?" — বাংলাদেশে যেটা কাটা-বাছা, ইংরেজিতে সেটা clean and cut। আর ইলিশের ইংরেজি hilsa, কই fish-এর ব্যাপারে দ্বিধা থাকলে নাম নিয়ে টানাটানি না করে দেখিয়ে বলুন "This one, please" — বিদেশে বাংলাদেশি দোকানেও এই বাক্যটাই সবচেয়ে বেশি কাজে লাগে। শেষ ধাপে দুটো বাক্য মনে রাখুন, কারণ এখানেই টাকা এদিক-ওদিক হয়। "How much altogether?" — মোট কত। আর ভাংতি নিয়ে: "Sorry, I don't have change" অথবা "Do you have change for a thousand?" — বাংলাদেশের বাজারে হাজার টাকার নোট ভাঙানো নিয়ে যে টানাপোড়েন হয়, ইংরেজিতে সেটার শব্দ change, যেটা একইসাথে ভাংতি এবং ফেরত টাকা দুটোই বোঝায়।

How much is it?
'What is the rate?' sounds like currency exchange; at a market ask 'How much is it?' or 'How much per kilo?'.
Give discount.
Can I get a discount, please?
A bare command sounds rude; make it a polite question with 'Can I…, please?'.
This is very costly.
That's a bit too expensive.
'Costly' is unusual in speech; 'too expensive' is natural, and 'a bit' softens it politely.
I want half kilo.
Can I get half a kilo, please?
Say 'half a kilo' (with 'a') and turn it into a polite request.
