Introductionভূমিকা

"I am a fresher." Every job fair in Dhaka is full of it, and outside South Asia the word does not exist — the interviewer will hear something between "fresh" and "freshman" and quietly lose a second working out what you meant. The English for it is ordinary: "This would be my first full-time job."

"I am a fresher." ঢাকার প্রতিটি চাকরি মেলায় কথাটা শোনা যায়, অথচ দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার বাইরে শব্দটার অস্তিত্বই নেই — ইন্টারভিউয়ার শুনবেন "fresh" আর "freshman"-এর মাঝামাঝি কিছু, আর চুপচাপ এক সেকেন্ড খরচ করবেন বোঝার চেষ্টায়। এর ইংরেজিটা একেবারে সাধারণ: "This would be my first full-time job."

Interview English is a set of prepared sentences for a predictable set of moments: arriving, describing your work, naming a strength, handling a hard question, asking your own, and leaving. You are not being tested on vocabulary — you are being tested on whether your answers are specific.

ইন্টারভিউয়ের ইংরেজি মানে কয়েকটা অনুমানযোগ্য মুহূর্তের জন্য আগে থেকে তৈরি করা বাক্য: ঢোকা, নিজের কাজের বর্ণনা, একটা শক্তি বলা, কঠিন প্রশ্ন সামলানো, নিজের প্রশ্ন করা, আর বেরিয়ে আসা। শব্দভান্ডারের পরীক্ষা এটা নয় — পরীক্ষা হচ্ছে আপনার উত্তরগুলো নির্দিষ্ট কি না।

প্রথমে সেই বাংলিশ শব্দগুলো, যেগুলো ইন্টারভিউ বোর্ডে সবার আগে কানে লাগে। "I am doing a job in a bank" — ইংরেজিতে job করা যায় না; বলুন "I work at a bank"। "I have 3 years experience" — মাঝখানে of লাগে, নয়তো apostrophe: "three years of experience" বা "three years' experience"। "My qualification is BBA" — qualification শব্দটা ফরমের ভাষা; বলুন "I did my BBA at Dhaka University"। আর "fresher"-এর মতোই "passed out" — বাংলাদেশে মানে পাস করা, ইংরেজিতে মানে জ্ঞান হারানো; বলুন "I graduated in 2024"। উত্তরের কাঠামোটা তিন ভাগে ভাবুন: সরাসরি উত্তর, একটা নির্দিষ্ট উদাহরণ, আর কাজটার সাথে যোগসূত্র। "One of my strengths is staying calm under pressure. Last Ramadan our branch was short two people and I handled the counter alone for three weeks — the queue never went over ten minutes. That's the kind of pressure I expect in this role." উদাহরণটাই পুরো উত্তরের ওজন বহন করে; উদাহরণ ছাড়া প্রতিটি শক্তির কথা শুনতে একরকম লাগে। দুর্বলতার প্রশ্নে সত্যিকারের একটা দুর্বলতা বলুন, আর সাথে বলুন সেটা নিয়ে কী করছেন। "I used to take on too much myself instead of delegating. Since last year I've been assigning the routine reports to my junior, and it has freed up my mornings." "I am a perfectionist" বা "I work too hard" — এই উত্তরগুলো এতবার শোনা হয়েছে যে ইন্টারভিউয়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে বুঝে যান প্রশ্নটা আপনি এড়িয়ে গেলেন। আর কয়েকটা ব্যবহারিক কথা, বিশেষ করে বাংলাদেশের বোর্ডের জন্য। প্রশ্ন না বুঝলে অনুমান করবেন না — "Sorry, could you repeat the question, please?" বা সময় নিতে "That's a good question. Let me think for a moment." — দুটোই পেশাদার শোনায়। বেতনের প্রশ্ন এলে সংখ্যা এড়ানোর দরকার নেই, তবে পরিসর দিন: "Based on my experience and the market, I'd be looking at something in the range of…"। শেষে প্রশ্ন করতে বললে "No, sir" বলবেন না — একটা প্রশ্নও না থাকা মানে আগ্রহ নেই; জিজ্ঞেস করুন "Could you tell me more about the team I'd be working with?" আর বেরোনোর সময়: "Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you."

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • I am doing a job in a bank.

    I work at a bank. / I have a job at a bank.

    'Doing a job' is a direct translation from Bangla; natural English is 'I work at…'.

  • My hobby is to playing cricket.

    My hobby is playing cricket.

    After 'is' use either 'to play' or 'playing', not 'to playing'.

  • I have 3 years experience.

    I have three years of experience.

    Use 'years of experience', and spell out small numbers when speaking formally.

  • I want this job because I need money.

    I'm interested in this role because it matches my skills and goals.

    Focus on fit and motivation, not only salary — it sounds more professional.

  • Keep 'Tell me about yourself' short: your current role, key experience and why this job — about one minute. — 'Tell me about yourself' সংক্ষিপ্ত রাখুন: বর্তমান কাজ, মূল অভিজ্ঞতা আর কেন এই চাকরি — প্রায় এক মিনিট।
  • If you need a second to think, say 'That's a good question, let me think' instead of staying silent. — ভাবার সময় দরকার হলে চুপ না থেকে বলুন 'That's a good question, let me think'।
  • Stay formal and positive: use 'I'm confident', 'I'm keen to learn' and avoid slang or one-word answers. — আনুষ্ঠানিক ও ইতিবাচক থাকুন: 'I'm confident', 'I'm keen to learn' ব্যবহার করুন; স্ল্যাং বা এক-শব্দের উত্তর এড়িয়ে চলুন।
