In an emergency the operator needs one thing before anything else: where you are. Not what happened, not who is hurt — where. In Bangladesh the number is 999; in the UK it is 999, in the United States and Canada 911, across the European Union 112. Learn your number and learn to say your location first, slowly, twice.

Emergency English is deliberately ugly: short sentences, present tense, no politeness. Four pieces of information get help moving — where, what happened, how many people, and whether anyone is breathing. Grammar does not matter here; order does.

"There's a fire in the building." "A man has collapsed." তিন, কতজন: "Two people are hurt." চার, অবস্থা: "One of them isn't breathing." — এই শেষ তথ্যটাই ঠিক করে দেয় কোন গাড়িটা আগে আসবে। গঠনটা মনে রাখুন: "There's been an accident." — এটাই ইংরেজিতে দুর্ঘটনার খবর দেওয়ার নির্দিষ্ট রূপ। "One accident happened here" ব্যাকরণে ভুল নয়, কিন্তু জরুরি লাইনে এটা অচেনা শোনায় আর অপারেটরের এক সেকেন্ড নষ্ট হয়। একইভাবে "Call to the police" নয় — call-এর পরে to বসে না: "Call the police." আর "He is no more breathing" নয় — "He's not breathing." ("He is no more" ইংরেজিতে মৃত্যু বোঝায়, শ্বাস বন্ধ নয়, তাই ভুলটা বিপজ্জনক।) এই এক জায়গায় ইংরেজি ভদ্রতার নিয়ম উল্টে যায়। বাকি সব পাতায় আমরা বলি অনুরোধ প্রশ্নের রূপে করুন — "Could you please…"। জরুরি অবস্থায় নয়। "Help!" "Everybody out!" — সরাসরি আদেশই ঠিক, আর এখানে ভদ্রতা খুঁজতে গিয়ে দেরি করাটাই একমাত্র ভুল। বাংলাদেশি অফিস-ইংরেজির অভ্যাসে "Please do the needful, there is accident" বেরিয়ে আসতে পারে; ওটা কোনো কাজে আসবে না। আর কয়েকটা প্রস্তুতির কথা, যেগুলো ইংরেজির চেয়েও বেশি কাজে দেয়। নতুন কোনো দেশে পৌঁছেই জিজ্ঞেস করে নিন "What's the emergency number here?" — উত্তরটা ফোনে সেভ করুন। নিজের ঠিকানাটা ইংরেজিতে বলার অভ্যাস করুন, কারণ আতঙ্কের মুহূর্তে মাথা ফাঁকা হয়ে যায়। কারও অ্যালার্জি বা নিয়মিত ওষুধ থাকলে সেটা কাগজে লিখে মানিব্যাগে রাখুন। আর অপারেটর যত প্রশ্নই করুন, লাইন কাটবেন না — "Don't hang up" তাঁরা বলবেনই, কারণ কথা বলতে বলতেই গাড়ি রওনা হয়ে যায়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

Please do the needful, there is accident.
Please help — there's been an accident.
'Do the needful' is office English, not emergency English. Say 'Please help', and 'there's been an accident'.
One accident happened here.
There's been an accident here.
We don't count an event with 'one'. The natural phrase is 'there's been an accident'.
He is no more breathing.
He's not breathing.
'No more' talks about quantity or time. For the negative, just use 'not': 'He's not breathing.'
Call to the police fast.
Call the police, quick!
'Call' takes the object directly — no 'to'. And 'quick!' is the natural urgent word.
