English Greetings and Responses
English Greetings and Responses
Introduction
Greetings are the doorway to every conversation. Knowing a few English greetings and the right responses lets you sound friendly and confident whether you meet a teacher, a boss or a friend.
Definition
A greeting is a short phrase you say when you meet someone ('Good morning', 'How are you?') and a response is how the other person replies ('Good morning', 'I'm fine, thanks — and you?').
Greeting হলো কারো সাথে দেখা হলে বলা একটি ছোট বাক্য ('Good morning', 'How are you?') আর response হলো অপর জনের উত্তর ('Good morning', 'I'm fine, thanks — and you?')।
Bangla Explanation
সময় অনুযায়ী greeting বদলায়: সকালে "Good morning", দুপুর/বিকেলে "Good afternoon", সন্ধ্যায় "Good evening". "How are you?"-এর স্বাভাবিক উত্তর "I'm fine, thank you. And you?" বন্ধুদের সাথে casual greeting: "Hey!", "What's up?", "How's it going?" — এগুলোর হালকা উত্তর "Not much", "Pretty good". "কী খবর"-কে সরাসরি "What is your news?" অনুবাদ করবেন না; বলুন "What's up?" বা "How's it going?"।

Common Mistakes
Good night, sir! (on arriving at an evening class)
Good evening, sir!
'Good night' is only for leaving at night. When you arrive in the evening, say 'Good evening'.
What is your news?
What's up? / How's it going?
'What is your news?' is a literal translation of 'কী খবর'. Use 'What's up?' or 'How's it going?'.
I am fine, and your?
I'm fine, and you?
The word is 'you', not 'your': 'And you?'.
How are you? — How are you? (only)
How are you? — I'm fine, thanks. And you?
Answer first, then ask back. Replying only with the same question sounds abrupt.
Tips
- Match the time of day: morning, afternoon, evening. 'Good night' means goodbye, not hello.
- Always answer and then ask back — 'I'm fine, thanks. And you?' — it shows warmth. And you?'
- Use formal greetings ('Good morning, sir') with teachers and bosses, and casual ones ('Hey!', 'What's up?') with friends. — শিক্ষক-বসের সাথে formal ('Good morning, sir'), বন্ধুদের সাথে casual ('Hey!', 'What's up?') greeting ব্যবহার করুন।

Is 'How do you do?' still used?
It is very formal and old-fashioned. In most situations use 'How are you?' or 'Nice to meet you'. If someone does say 'How do you do?', the polite reply is the same phrase back: 'How do you do?'.
What's the difference between 'How are you?' and 'How's it going?'
They mean the same thing, but 'How are you?' is neutral and works everywhere, while 'How's it going?' and 'What's up?' are casual and best kept for friends.
Do I always have to answer 'How are you?' honestly?
No. In English it is often just a polite greeting, so a short 'I'm fine, thanks. And you?' is expected even on an average day. Save the details for close friends who really ask.
