Introductionভূমিকা
Once you are working abroad, English stops being a subject and becomes a tool — for understanding an instruction on a site, for asking where your salary is, and for the day something goes wrong. This is the English that does those three jobs.
বিদেশে কাজ শুরু হলে ইংরেজি আর পড়ার বিষয় থাকে না, হাতিয়ার হয়ে যায় — কাজের নির্দেশ বোঝার জন্য, বেতন কোথায় জানার জন্য, আর যেদিন কিছু একটা গোলমাল হয় সেদিনের জন্য। এই তিনটে কাজের ইংরেজিই এখানে।

Workplace English abroad is a small, fixed vocabulary: instructions, safety words, time and money, and a handful of sentences for raising a problem clearly enough that it is written down.

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Staying silent when the salary is late.
My salary is late. When will I be paid? Please give it in writing.
Unpaid wages are the commonest complaint at Bangladeshi labour wings abroad, and a delay that is never raised in writing becomes very hard to prove later.
Nodding at an instruction you did not understand.
Sorry, please repeat. / Please show me.
On a construction site a misunderstood instruction is a safety risk, not just an embarrassment.
I am here since two years.
I have been here for two years.
'Since' takes a starting point and 'for' a length of time; a period continuing to now needs the present perfect.
Letting an employer hold the passport without asking.
Please return my passport.
Passport confiscation is illegal in most destination countries, and it is the main thing that stops a worker leaving a bad job.
Keeping no copy of the contract.
Photographing every document and sending it to family at home.
If the original is taken or lost, a photograph is the only evidence of what was agreed.

- Save your embassy's labour wing number in your phone and on paper. A phone can be taken. — দূতাবাসের শ্রম উইংয়ের নম্বর ফোনে ও কাগজে রাখুন। ফোন কেড়ে নেওয়া যায়।
- Photograph every document — contract, iqama, pay slips — and send the pictures home. — প্রতিটি কাগজের ছবি তুলে দেশে পাঠিয়ে রাখুন।
- Keep your own record of hours worked. Write the date and the hours in a notebook every day. — নিজের কর্মঘণ্টার হিসাব নিজে রাখুন — প্রতিদিন খাতায় তারিখ ও ঘণ্টা লিখুন।
- Say numbers slowly and write them down. Salary and hours are where misunderstandings cost money. — সংখ্যা ধীরে বলুন ও লিখে দেখান। বেতন আর ঘণ্টাতেই ভুল বোঝাবুঝিতে টাকা যায়।

How much English do I need to work in the Gulf?
For most site and service work, very little — perhaps two hundred words and the ability to say you do not understand. What matters is using those words rather than staying silent.
Can my employer keep my passport?
In most destination countries, no — it is illegal, though it happens. Ask for it back, keep a photograph of every page, and contact your embassy's labour wing if it is refused.
What should I do if my salary is not paid?
Ask in person, ask for the answer in writing, keep your own record of hours worked, and contact the Bangladesh labour wing at the embassy. Do not let months accumulate before raising it.
Is it rude to ask about pay or safety?
No. Both are normal questions in a workplace anywhere. Asking politely and in plain English is expected; staying silent is what causes problems to grow.
