English for a Visa Interview
ভিসা ইন্টারভিউয়ের ইংরেজি
Introductionভূমিকা
At a visa interview the English you need is short, plain and factual: say why you are going, who is paying, and what you will do afterwards — one or two sentences each. This page is about that English only; the rules, documents and fees are on the embassy's own website, and nothing here can predict a decision.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A visa interview is a short question-and-answer conversation at a consular counter. The language job is simple: understand the question, answer that question, and stop — and your answer must match the papers you handed in.
ভিসা ইন্টারভিউ হলো কাউন্টারে ছোট প্রশ্নোত্তর। ভাষার কাজটা সহজ: প্রশ্নটা বুঝুন, সেই প্রশ্নেরই উত্তর দিন, তারপর থামুন — আর উত্তরটা জমা দেওয়া কাগজপত্রের সাথে মিলতে হবে।
Bangla Explanation
প্রথমত, স্থায়ী তথ্য বলতে present simple ব্যবহার করুন — “I work at a private bank”, “My father runs a hardware shop”, “I live in Mirpur.” ভবিষ্যতের নিশ্চিত পরিকল্পনার জন্য will বা going to — “I'll start my classes in January.” আর ইতিমধ্যে হয়ে যাওয়া কাজের জন্য present perfect — “I've already paid the first semester's fee.” দ্বিতীয়ত, তৃতীয় পুরুষে -s: “My brother sponsors me”, “He works as an engineer.” বাংলায় ক্রিয়ার সাথে পুরুষভেদে এই -s নেই বলে এটা সবচেয়ে বেশি হারিয়ে যায়, আর এটাই সবচেয়ে সহজে ধরা পড়ে। কিছু বাংলিশ অভ্যাস কাউন্টারে বেমানান শোনায়: “Myself Rahim” নয়, বলুন “My name is Rahim” বা “I'm Rahim.” “I am going to abroad” নয় — abroad নিজেই ক্রিয়াবিশেষণ, তাই “I'm going abroad.” “I am doing job” নয় — “I work at…” বা “I have a job at…”। “I will return back” নয় — return-এর মধ্যেই ফেরার অর্থ আছে, তাই “I'll return” অথবা “I'll come back.” প্রশ্ন বুঝতে না পারলে অনুমান করে উত্তর দেবেন না, বরং সোজাসুজি বলুন “Sorry, could you repeat the question, please?” — না বুঝে ভুল উত্তর দেওয়ার চেয়ে এটা অনেক ভালো। আর সংখ্যা বলার সময় ধীরে বলুন: টাকার অঙ্ক, তারিখ, সেমিস্টারের ফি — এগুলো কাগজে যা লেখা আছে ঠিক তাই বলুন। শেষে ছোট করে “Thank you” বলে সরে আসুন; অনুনয়-বিনয় কোনো প্রশ্নের উত্তর নয়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Myself Rahim Uddin.
My name is Rahim Uddin. / I'm Rahim Uddin.
'Myself' is a reflexive pronoun, not an introduction — it cannot start a sentence this way. English introductions need a subject and a verb.
I am going to abroad next month.
I'm going abroad next month.
'Abroad' is already an adverb meaning 'to another country'. Bangla 'বিদেশে' carries the locative ending, so the extra 'to' feels natural but is wrong.
I am doing job in a bank.
I work at a bank.
'Do a job' is a Banglish collocation from 'চাকরি করি'. English uses the verb 'work', and a permanent fact takes the present simple, not the continuous.
My brother sponsor me. He have a business.
My brother sponsors me. He has a business.
Bangla verbs do not change for third person, so the -s disappears. With he, she or a single name, the present simple verb takes -s (has, works, lives).
After finishing, I will return back to my country.
After I finish, I'll return to my country.
'Return' already means 'go back', so 'return back' repeats itself. 'Come back' is the everyday alternative.
Sir, please give me visa, it is very urgent for me.
I've brought all the documents listed on your website.
A request is not an answer to a question, and 'visa' needs an article — 'a visa'. Interviews move on information, so give the information.
Tipsটিপস
- Answer the question that was asked, then stop. A long extra explanation invites more questions. — যে প্রশ্ন করা হয়েছে তারই উত্তর দিন, তারপর থামুন। বাড়তি লম্বা ব্যাখ্যা নতুন প্রশ্ন ডেকে আনে।
- Do not memorise a speech. Learn the facts — dates, amounts, names — and say them in your own simple English. — বক্তৃতা মুখস্থ করবেন না। তথ্যগুলো শিখুন — তারিখ, টাকার অঙ্ক, নাম — আর নিজের সহজ ইংরেজিতে বলুন।
- Say numbers slowly and exactly as they appear on your documents. — সংখ্যা ধীরে বলুন, আর কাগজে যেমন লেখা আছে ঠিক তেমনই বলুন।
- If you did not understand, ask: 'Sorry, could you repeat the question?' A guessed answer is worse than a question. — না বুঝলে জিজ্ঞেস করুন: 'Sorry, could you repeat the question?' অনুমান করে উত্তর দেওয়ার চেয়ে প্রশ্ন করা ভালো।
- Practise saying your purpose in one sentence out loud until it comes without effort. — আপনার যাওয়ার উদ্দেশ্যটা এক বাক্যে জোরে বলে অনুশীলন করুন, যতক্ষণ না সহজেই বেরিয়ে আসে।

Practiceঅনুশীলন
Try each one, then reveal the answer.
1. Answer in one sentence: 'What will you study, and where?'
Hint: Subject + will + verb + place. One sentence is enough.
2. Fix the sentence: 'My father do business and he give my expenses.'
Hint: Third-person -s, and the natural verbs are 'run a business' and 'pay expenses'.
3. Rewrite: 'I am going to abroad for doing job.'
Hint: No 'to' before abroad; and English says 'work', not 'do job'.
4. Say that you have already paid your first semester fee.
Hint: A finished action with a present result takes the present perfect.

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
Do I need perfect English for a visa interview?
No. Clear, simple sentences that answer the question are what the conversation needs. Short correct sentences work better than long complicated ones you are unsure of.
Should I memorise my answers?
Learn the facts, not a script. A memorised speech usually answers a different question from the one you were asked, and you cannot adjust it when the officer follows up.
What if I do not understand a question?
Say 'Sorry, could you repeat the question, please?' or 'Sorry, do you mean my tuition fee or my living costs?' Asking for clarification is normal in any interview.
What questions will be asked at my interview?
That depends on the country, the visa type and your own file, and no website can tell you in advance. Prepare the facts of your own case — purpose, funding, plans — and be ready to say them in plain English. The embassy's website is the only reliable source for its requirements.
